The city centre would be transformed and tens of thousands of Aberdeen supporters would be allowed take to the streets for a party, councillors have revealed. That's despite roadworks taking place on Union Street, which would usually be an important part of the bus route. Labour councillor M. Tauqeer Malik said: "Usually Union Street would be ideal but it's a complete mess." Committee convener Alex McLellan has proposed that £35,000 from the Common Good Fund to pay for the celebrations, but finer details on the route were not disclosed. He said: "It would be tradition that if Aberdeen Football Club were successful in the Scottish Cup final that we would want to celebrate that in an appropriate way." The Pittodrie side had an open top parade when the last time they won a major trophy. That was the League Cup back in 2014, which, ironically, held its final at Celtic Park that year. Derek McInnes' side beat Inverness on penalties that day after a goalless 120 minutes at Parkhead. The parade that year started at 1pm from Albyn Place. Aberdeen promised 35k parade if they win Scottish Cup

Aberdeen Football Club has been promised a city celebration and parade if they defeat Celtic and lift the Scottish Cup later this month. The Dons will face Celtic in the Scottish Cup final on May 24 at Hampden Park in Glasgow. If Aberdeen win, the city centre could be transformed into a sea of red as thousands are expected to come out and cheer on the team. But this isn't the first time the council has voiced its support for a city celebration dedicated to the Dons. Councillors approved plans to give the club a victory parade through the city centre back in November 2023 if they won the Viaplay Cup. But sadly, the team was beaten 1-0 by Rangers at Scotland's national stadium. Committee convener Alex McLellan put forward the suggestion to hail the potential cup win. He said: 'It would be tradition that if Aberdeen Football Club were successful in the Scottish Cup final that we would want to celebrate that in an appropriate way.' The finance boss proposed that £35,000 would be taken from the Common Good Fund for a parade and accompanying celebrations. 'We would want to wish AFC every success with the cup final in Glasgow in the weeks to come,' he added. Labour councillor M. Tauqeer Malik backed the proposal but asked where the planned celebration would be held. He explained: 'Usually Union Street would be ideal but it's a complete mess.' However, the Lower Deeside member wished the team every success and said he was 'optimistic' there would be a celebration in the Granite City. Meanwhile, Dons fan councillor Dell Henrickson didn't wish the team luck out of fear he would jinx them and destroy their chance at cup success. But, he revealed he was lucky enough to obtain one of the 20,000 allocated tickets for the match. Aberdeen FC last received a city parade to celebrate their Scottish League Cup win back in March 2014. The team took to an open top bus to show off the legendary trophy as they made their way down Union Street. It is estimated that more than 50,000 fans came out to show their support for the Dons. An open top bus parade was also held in 1983 after the team won the European Cup against Real Madrid. The team, led by Alex Ferguson at the time, was cheered on by fans as they made their way down Union Street before arriving at Pittodrie. Aberdeen agrees council tax increase of 9.85%

Councillors in Aberdeen have backed a council tax rise of 9.85%. Officials had been recommending 11%, but the SNP and Liberal Democrat administration successfully proposed the lower figure. It means band D council tax will be set at £1,636.27. Proposing the 9.85% rise, the SNP's Alex McLellan said the council faced "incredibly challenging" circumstances and "incredibly difficult" decisions. The opposition Labour group had proposed a 6.5% council tax rise, while the Conservatives suggested a 7% increase. Among cities, Aberdeen's decision follows Edinburgh and Dundee opting for 8%, and Glasgow at 7.5%. More stories from North East Scotland, Orkney and Shetland Listen to news from North East Scotland on BBC Sounds Mr McLellan added that council tax payers had the right to expect a "certain standard of delivery" with services. Band D rising by 9.85% would add £146 a year to bills, Mr McLellan said they would look into an investment plan for refurbishing the city's "iconic" Beach Ballroom, with a view to securing the future of the building. Labour councillor Tauqeer Malik argued for 6.5% and a budget of "positivity rather than negativity". Conservative Richard Brooks, pushing for 7%, said 9.85% was effectively a 10% rise and called for a fair deal for Aberdeen. Independent Marie Boulton warned that residents would be left with the reality of the council's decision, and that the near 10% rise would put some "over the edge". The 9.85% motion passed with 23 votes against 12 for the Labour amendment, with nine abstentions. Councillors in Aberdeenshire, Moray and Shetland previously went with a 10% increase in council tax. On Tuesday, Orkney councillors agreed a 15% rise - the highest such rise so far across Scotland.
