Samudra prevails in battle of blue bloods at Sandown on Wednesday
Rich pedigrees were on display at Sandown on Wednesday with blue-blood juveniles Samudra and I'mateez fighting out a hotly contested 1000m 2YO Handicap. Fast filly Samudra, a $750,000 daughter of super stallion Snitzel out of Group 1 winner Pippie denied I'mateez, the half-brother of 10-time Group 1 winner Imperatriz. Trainer Mark Walker, who ironically conditioned Te Akau champion Imperatriz during her career was most pleased with Samudra's last 100m under pressure from I'mateez and third-placed Latin Boss. Latin Boss went stride for stride with Samurdra through the first 800m and only relented late. '(Samudra) was under a lot of pressure but she really dug deep and found,' Walker said. 'Probably going forward she's going to be a better chaser than leader. 'You would've thought she was all done at the 100m but that natural (talent), mum's (Pippie) ability kicked in and she's going to be a much nicer three-year-old, that's for sure.' The blue-blooded Samudra grits her teeth, staving off the challenge of her opponents to make a winning debut 🙌 Odds on backers won't want that again 😅 @BMelham â€' (@Racing) May 21, 2025 Samudra is set to be spelled for the spring with attention on stakes success. 'She'll keep improving with a bit more time,' Walker said. Alex Rae, trainer of I'mateez, said the two-year-old Capitalist colt would likely stay in work after a most promising debut. Rae went into the 1000m event unsure how laidback I'mateez would perform under race pressure. 'He's just been a bit plain in his work late,' Rae said. 'It was good he added a string to his bow today so he's going to make a horse.'

Fixing domestic form 'key' if Ferguson to stay as Rangers boss
Rangers having nothing to fear when facing Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League quarter-finals, according to Alex Rae, as the former assistant manager challenged the club to return to the San Mames Stadium for the final in progressed to the last eight with a penalty shootout win over Jose Mourinho's who left Ibrox along with Philippe Clement last month, says his old side should enter the tie with "plenty of confidence" given their recent exploits in the competition, particularly reaching the final in 2022."Athletic Bilbao are a very decent outfit, they're fourth in La Liga," Rae told BBC Radio Scotland. "That tells you about the kind of opposition they're up against. "But one of the key things over the last four or five years is that Rangers have pulled out some really big moments in this competition against big, big clubs, so they'll go into it with plenty of confidence. "It suits them as well with this transitional moment they're in, with a low block, being compact, trying to hit teams on the break."Playing in Europe has long suited Rangers' style, but Rae says building on last weekend's derby win by improving their domestic form is key for Ferguson if he wishes to secure the position on a permanent basis."Going forward between now and the summer, that's key for Barry and his team," Rae added."That might strengthen his hand in terms of getting the job permanently. "It would be great to go to Bilbao again in the summer having been to Seville a couple of years ago, but the domestic form needs to be a lot more positive, particularly the away form."The home form in the league was fine, up until the St Mirren game a few weeks ago."It was competitive - the type of form would have given you a crack at the title - but unfortunately we couldn't maintain that away from home."

'Rangers now believe they can go toe-to-toe with Celtic'
Ex-Rangers midfielder and assistant manager Alex Rae feels the "belief" his former side "can go toe-to-toe" with Celtic has been restored after they earned their first win at Parkhead in over four who exited along with manager Philippe Clement last month, says Rangers now enter the Old Firm derby with "confidence they can get the job done".That is reflected in the nine goals Rangers have scored in the last three meetings, winning two of those."If you look back at the last few Old Firm games, we've managed to score several goals against them," Rae told BBC Radio Scotland."So from that perspective, you're going into these games feeling confident you can actually score goals."There seems to be a belief, particularly in this derby now, that they can actually get the job done."Rae has no doubt that mindset has stemmed from getting a "pivotal" win against Brendan Rodgers' side in January, which was Clement's only victory in the fixture at the seventh time of asking."We couldn't get a positive result against Celtic, even though we felt as if we'd done enough in games to actually warrant a result," Rae added. "Obviously Barry has played a different shape, but I think the belief within that squad now is that they can actually go toe-to-toe with Celtic on any given day."
