Javier Baez hits two HRs as Tigers knock off Pirates

June 18 - Javier Baez hit a pair of solo home runs and the host Detroit Tigers downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Tuesday. Baez's power display made a winner of Casey Mize, who allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in six innings. Chase Lee, Tommy Kahnle and Brenan Hanifee each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Detroit, which had lost its last two games. Riley Greene and Wenceel Perez blasted two-run homers and Perez also supplied a run-scoring triple. Alexander Canario had a two-run single for Pittsburgh. Canario replaced Bryan Reynolds, who left the game in the second inning when his wife went into labor. Starter Bailey Falter gave up three runs and five hits in five innings. Pittsburgh has lost four of its last five games. The Pirates scored an unearned run in the second. Spencer Horwitz led off with a single and moved to third on an error by shortstop Baez. Adam Frazier's groundout brought him in. Detroit scored in the bottom of the inning. Spencer Torkelson led off with a double and Perez followed with his two-run homer, lofting a Falter fastball over the left field wall. Isiah Kiner-Falefa's leadoff single in the third sparked Pittsburgh's two-run inning. Andrew McCutchen smacked a one-out double before Canario lined a 3-0 Mize fastball into right, scoring both runners. Baez tied the game at 3 leading off the fifth. He blasted a Falter curveball off the top of the left-center field wall and it caromed into the visitor's bullpen. The Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the sixth against Carmen Mlodzinski. Greene led off with a single and scored when Perez smacked a fastball into the right-center field gap for a triple. Baez gave the Tigers some breathing room in the seventh when he cranked a Mlodzinski sweeper over the left-center field wall. Kerry Carpenter was hit by pitch with two outs in the inning and Greene made it 7-3 by blasting a slider over the right field wall. --Field Level Media

Báez hit solo homers in the fifth and seventh innings on the day he reached 10 years of major league service. Wenceel Pérez and Riley Greene also homered for Detroit. Advertisement Casey Mize (7-2) got the win, allowing three runs — two earned — on five hits in six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the second when Spencer Horwitz singled and scored on Adam Frazier's groundout, but the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the inning on Pérez's homer. Alexander Canario's two-run single put the Pirates back in front 3-2 in the third, but Báez tied the game with a homer in the fifth. Canario replaced Bryan Reynolds in right field in the second inning after his wife went into labor. Pérez gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead with an RBI triple in the sixth and Báez made it a two-run game with a leadoff homer in the seventh. The Cubs used a double steal to put runners on second and third in the 10th against David Bednar (1-5). Jon Berti struck out swinging for the first out, but Happ followed with a liner to right, delighting the crowd of 40,162 at Wrigley Field. Advertisement The NL Central leaders won three of four against the last-place Pirates. Every game was a one-run contest. Dansby Swanson and Michael Busch each had two hits for Chicago. Swanson and Seiya Suzuki each drove in a run. Chris Flexen (4-0) pitched a 1-2-3 10th for the win, completing a four-hitter. Spencer Horwitz had two hits and drove in a run for the Pirates.
