Chandigarh hosts India's first coach certification programme in acrobatic dance
The National Federation of Acrobatic & Dance Sports of India (NFADI), in affiliation with the World Federation of Acrobatic & Dance Sports (WFADS), organised the country's first coach certification programme in Chandigarh from May 31 to June 5, 2025. Master trainers from Russia, Alexey and Svetlana Gavrilova for acro swing, and Dimitry Lonov and Ziurniaeva Daria for acrobatic Rock 'N' Roll, world champions in their fields, delivered instructions to over 60 aspiring coaches and performers from nine states of India. The trainers and the participants showcased an outstanding performance, blending passion, energy, and skill in every step and also embracing a lifestyle of fitness and sportsmanship. The highlight of the event was the announcement of two standout couples, one from each category who have received a fully-sponsored 15-day intensive training trip to Moscow, under the aegis of WFADS. WFADS president Oumy Sene, who attended the training in Chandigarh, expressed her admiration for India's energy and promise, 'India holds deep cultural rhythm and untapped talent. The participation of 62 individuals from 9 states clearly shows the hunger and commitment here. We at WFADS see great potential in India of becoming a global leader in acrobatic dance sports,' she said. NFADI president Jasmeet Kaur Shan added,' This dynamic blend of dance, acrobatics, and fitness is not just an art—it's a sport with Olympic potential. India's dancers, gymnasts, and fitness enthusiasts now have a powerful new avenue to compete globally, and this certification is just the beginning.'

Zookeeper mauled to death by rare tiger after making vital 'mistake'
A zookeeper was recently killed on site by a white tiger who was believed to have been protecting her cubs. Originally from the Crimean Peninsula, a keeper at Ukraine's Mariupol Zoo made a crucial mistake whilst doing his usual feeding and cleaning rounds. Alexey Melnikov, who'd previously appeared on Russian TV and told cameras that he 'can't live without animals', paid the ultimate price by forgetting to move the rare white bengal tiger named Lucy before entering her domain during feeding time Fellow keeper Galina Zamarakhina said: 'I turned around and said 'Lyosha [Alexey], where's Lucy?' 'He said: 'In that booth, I moved her over already'.' Unfortunately Alexey had actually forgotten to move the animal to another cage, with Galina hearing a 'scream' and only just managing to close the cage in time and avoid a similar fate to his colleague. He said: "She [the tigress] was looking at me. I don't know how I managed to shut it." The Ukrainian zoo's director Savely Vashura said of the horrific incident: "The white tigress has four cubs. She came out from behind, and bam – the man was gone. Maybe he got distracted, maybe something else happened – he was only human." The Russian Investigative Committee has now launched a criminal probe, with a spokesperson also sharing: "A white tiger attacked an employee of the Mariupol Zoo. "According to preliminary data, the animal attacked the employee when he entered the enclosure to feed it. The man died from the injuries he received." Lucy - technically a 'leucistic morph' of the Bengal tiger - apparently 'gnawed' on Melnikov's head. In a similar big-cat encounter that happened nine years ago, one mother's visit to Badaling Wildlife World in Beijing ended in tragedy when she exited her car on the safari road to save her daughter. Prior to entering the Chinese wildlife park, the daughter (whose surname is Zhao) signed a document agreeing not to get out of her vehicle - what with all the apex predators roaming around - but eventually became overwhelmed with car-sickness. Tragic footage from the scene revealed this woman casually walking around to the other side of the car while fellow safari lovers parked up to enjoy the exotic sights in the background. Suddenly, a Siberian tiger rushed at her, dragging her away from the road. Her family immediately got out of the car in a panic and ran to her aid, yet her mother was pounced on by a different tiger and mauled to death. Post-tragedy, the Yanqing district government confirmed there had been an incident at Badaling Wildlife World. Zhao survived and went on to file a lawsuit against the zoological establishment, claiming that she hadn't been properly informed of the dangers it housed and that a ranger had failed to jump to the family's rescue when attacked. The district would subsequently publish a report stating that this was not an 'industry security accident', meaning Badaling wouldn't face any penalties and that the park visitor behaved irresponsibly.

White Bengal tiger mauls zookeeper to death after he mistakenly enters its cage at feeding time
A zookeeper has been mauled to death by a rare female white Bengal tiger after he mistakenly entered the big cat's cage during its feeding time. Alexey Melnikov died instantly at Mariupol Zoo in Russian-occupied Ukraine after the tigress - named Lucy - 'attacked him and gnawed his head'. Fellow zoo employee, Galina Zamarakhina, who narrowly escaped the beast, witnessed the horrific attack. She explained that Alexey was under the impression that he had moved the tigress to another cage before entering the enclosure. But it appears he had in fact not moved the big cat, and was shocked to encounter Lucy lurking in a wooden den when he entered the cage. 'I heard a scream,' Galina recalled. 'I somehow managed to close the cage in time, because she [the tigress] was looking at me. 'I don't know how I managed to shut it', she added. Zoo director Savely Vashura explained that the tigress was likely 'defending' her four cubs. 'She came out from behind, and bam – the man was gone. 'Maybe he got distracted, maybe something else happened – he was only human.' He said: 'Why it happened, I don't know…. 'He knew the animals, he loved them.' The keeper's blood was seen in the cage, as were his bloodstained clothes. The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal probe into the man's death. A spokesman said: 'A white tiger attacked an employee of the Mariupol Zoo. 'According to preliminary data, the animal attacked the employee when he entered the enclosure to feed it. 'The man died from the injuries he received.' Alexey had previously appeared on Russian television saying he had come to work in Mariupol from Crimea. 'I love animals very much – I can't live without them', he said. 'I clean, feed the predators. Mostly I work with predators. 'I move them [from one cage to another], keeping things in order.' The bloody incident comes several months after a zoo employee in Romania was killed by a tiger after entering its cage and failing to follow safety protocols. The 52-year-old zookeeper was reportedly bitten on the head by the animal at Pitesti Zoo on December 9 last year. While bringing food to the big cat, the caretaker allegedly ignored health and safety rules which require tigers to be completely separated from the access area. The zookeeper forgot to close the safety door, according to reports, and the animal was able to launch itself at the man, mauling him over several minutes. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene and the man was rushed to hospital. Tragically, he could not be saved.
