NASA's oldest active astronaut returns to Earth on 70th birthday

But NASA's oldest serving astronaut Don Pettit became a septuagenarian while hurtling towards the Earth in a spacecraft to wrap up a seven-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). A Soyuz capsule carrying the American and two Russian cosmonauts landed in Kazakhstan on Sunday, the day of Pettit's milestone birthday. 'Today at 0420 Moscow time (0120 GMT), the Soyuz MS-26 landing craft with Alexei Ovchinin, Ivan Vagner and Donald (Don) Pettit aboard landed near the Kazakh town of Zhezkazgan,' Russia's space agency Roscosmos said. Spending 220 days in space, Pettit and his crewmates Ovchinin and Vagner orbited the Earth 3,520 times and completed a journey of 93.3 million miles over the course of their mission. It was the fourth spaceflight for Pettit, who has logged more than 18 months in orbit throughout his 29-year career. The trio touched down in a remote area southeast of Kazakhstan after undocking from the space station just over three hours earlier. NASA images of the landing showed the small capsule parachuting down to Earth with the sunrise as a backdrop. The astronauts gave thumbs-up gestures as rescuers carried them from the spacecraft to an inflatable medical tent. Despite looking a little worse for wear as he was pulled from the vessel, Pettit was 'doing well and in the range of what is expected for him following return to Earth,' NASA said in a statement. He was then set to fly to the Kazakh city of Karaganda before boarding a NASA plane to the agency's Johnson Space Center in Texas. The astronauts spent their time on the ISS researching areas such as water sanitization technology, plant growth in various conditions and fire behavior in microgravity, NASA said. The trio's seven-month trip was just short of the nine months that NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams unexpectedly spent stuck on the orbital lab after the spacecraft they were testing suffered technical issues and was deemed unfit to fly them back to Earth. Successful return of Soyuz spacecraft with three astronauts
Moscow - (Saba): The Russian Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft successfully landed in the steppes of Kazakhstan on Sunday, carrying Russian cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, and American astronaut Donald Pettit, after a mission of more than 200 days to the International Space Station. The crew began their return journey after the spacecraft separated from the station at 00:57 Moscow time. The braking system then began operating in preparation for the landing, which occurred as planned at 3:27 a.m. During the mission, the crew conducted more than 40 scientific experiments, in addition to a spacewalk to install a spectrometer to study cosmic radiation. A new crew of astronauts from Russia, the United States, and Japan is scheduled to continue working on the station. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print more of (International)

Soyuz capsule returns to Earth from International Space Station
A Soyuz capsule carrying two Russians and one American from the International Space Station landed on Sunday in Kazakhstan, ending their seven-month research assignment. According to Russian space agency Roscosmos, the capsule carrying Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner and astronaut Don Pettit of US space agency Nasa landed on the Kazakh steppe near the city of Zhezkazgan at 6.20am (0120 GMT). Roscosmos said the parachute-assisted landing was a trouble-free descent. The agency noted that, coincidentally, Mr Pettit celebrated his 70th birthday on Sunday. Nasa said it was following its routine postlanding medical checks, and that the crew would return to the recovery staging area in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Pettit will then board a Nasa plane bound for the agency's Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, while Roscosmos said Ovchinin and Vagner will depart for a training base in Star City, Russia. On Friday, Mr Ovchinin handed over command of the ISS to Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi in a change of command ceremony.

Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft carrying Expedition 72 crew lands in Kazakhstan
The Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft, carrying Russian cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, along with NASA astronaut Donald Pettit, successfully returned to Earth, according to the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. The agency reported that the deorbiting and descent process proceeded normally. At 6:20 am Kazakhstan time (3:20 am CET), the Russian spacecraft made a parachute-assisted landing in Kazakhstan, southeast of the town of Dzhezkazgan. The astronauts were on a mission in space spanning 220 days. During the course of their assignment, they spanned the Earth 3,520 times and completed a journey of 150 million kilometres. Alexey Ovchinin completed his third spaceflight, Ivan Vagner his second, and Donald Pettit his fourth. NASA's Pettit served as flight engineer for Expedition 71 and 72, and has accumulated a career total of 590 days in orbit The three formed the main crew of Expedition 72 on board the International Space Station and conducted dozens of scientific experiments during their mission. They first docked on the ISS on 11 September, 2024. The crew have been helicopter-lifted to the recovery staging city of Karaganda in Kazakhstan. Pettit will board a NASA plane and return to Houston, while Ovchinin and Vagner will depart for a training base in Star City, Russia. On Friday, they handed the reigns of the ISS over to Expedition 73 crew, led by Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi. The changing of the guard was marked by a change of command ceremony on board the station.
