Vienna Group Delegation Hails Dar al-Ifta's Role in Promoting Tolerance, Peace

Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta welcomed on Monday a high-level delegation from the "Vienna Group on Religion and Diplomacy" of the European Union, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation in interfaith and intercultural dialogue and to combat hate speech and extremism.
The delegation commended Dar al-Ifta and its affiliated Salam Center for their pivotal roles in countering extremist ideologies and fostering a culture of tolerance and peace.
Dr. Ali Omar Al-Farouq, Head of the Religious Affairs Sector, conveyed the greetings of H.E. the Grand Mufti, Dr. Nazir Ayyad, and emphasized the significant role of fatwas in promoting social cohesion and sustainable development.
He highlighted the establishment of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide in 2015 by Dar al-Ifta, aimed at coordinating between global fatwa institutions, enhancing their capacities, and ensuring that fatwas reflect the true objectives of Islamic law in a manner that contributes to societal stability.
Mr. Hassan Mohamed, Executive Director of the Salam Center for Extremism and Islamophobia Studies, presented an overview of the center's work under the supervision of the Grand Mufti.
He outlined the center's specialized research and monitoring units, which produce digital content and training programs to raise awareness and protect youth. . The center adopts a rigorous academic approach in analyzing hate speech and extremist ideologies that distort religion to justify violence and exclusion, while also building effective international partnerships to unify global efforts against these threats.
The delegation expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality and praised Dar al-Ifta as an exemplary religious institution that blends scholarly rigor with global engagement. They also acknowledged the valuable work of the Salam Center in tracking and dismantling narratives of hatred and extremism.
The delegation affirmed the importance of working closely with moderate religious institutions like Dar al-Ifta to promote peace, reject violence, and support sustainable development. They emphasized that dialogue is no longer a luxury but a vital necessity in addressing the challenges of today's world.
