(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A man with an intellectual disability was charged with murdering a beggar in a closed-door proceeding at Shah Alam Hospital this morning. Fauzan Adib Aziz, 28, nodded to indicate he understood the charge after it was read to him before Shah Alam court assistant registrar Mislia Aris. However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. In a statement, Shah Alam police chief Iqbal Ibrahim said the proceeding was held behind closed doors at the hospital's observation ward as the accused is receiving treatment for epilepsy. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years. If not sentenced to death, Fauzan may also be subject to not less than 12 strokes of the cane. The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Alia Anisa Khairus Masnan while Fauzan was not represented by a lawyer. Case mention has been set for June 9 at the Shah Alam magistrates' court. Previously, the media reported that a beggar allegedly stabbed another alms-seeker in front of a bank in Section 18, Shah Alam, on April 24 after he wanted to ask for alms at the same spot as the victim.
