Could Nicaragua Be the Next 'It' Destination?
'The dried fruit alone…' My friend Kim's eyes fluttered closed as she recalled her recent visit to a tiny resort on a private island in Nicaragua. 'It tastes like candy.' Kim, a fashion editor whose spot-on taste dictates a good half of my clothing purchases, library holds, and video streams, now had the fix to my family's post-White Lotus spring break problem. We wanted to go to Costa Rica, following in the footsteps of seemingly everybody else we know—but given the Costa craze, the shortest flight we could find involved a nine-hour layover in Winnipeg. A trip to Nicaragua, Costa Rica's northern neighbor, was a little more realistic. Once a magnet for intrepid backpackers and surfers who were willing to overlook the nation's political turbulence and the State Department's alarming travel advisory, Nicaragua is shaping up to be the next 'it' destination for those seeking sun and sand. The Nicaraguan travel scene started to take flight right before the pandemic. After a few shaky years, it has caught up to where it left off—and then some. The menus are getting more intricate and delicious. The luxury experiences are getting more luxurious. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander recently retreated to what Salman Rushdie called a 'beautiful, volcanic country' in his account of a three-week visit. So did Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Margot Robbie went there for a yoga and surfing retreat (and encountered a human foot on the beach, but that's another story). Like electrolytes or Nutrafol, Nicaragua is one of those words that you can't stop hearing about once it lodges in your mind. 'It was a slow recovery, but we're back in the game,' Howard Caulson, the general manager of Jicaro Island Lodge, a thoroughly idyllic getaway, told me. 'Having a time out gave us a chance to up the ante. Beforehand, what we were providing was really good. Now it's even better.'

Emma Corrin showcases their quirky style in a fringed red skirt as they attend the Dom Pérignon party weeks after split from Rami Malek
Emma Corrin showcased their quirky sense of style on Thursday as they attended the star-studded Dom Pérignon Revelations dinner party at Tate Modern in London. The My Policeman star, 29, cut an edgy figure as they modelled a red fringe tassel skirt which was worn over a black micro skirt and leggings. Emma teamed the skirt with a white ribbed T-shirt featuring a pink flower motif and pointed black heels. The film star kept the rest of their look simple, ditching further accessories save for simple silver hoops and a delicate necklace which was tucked into their top. Emma appeared in good spirits as they posed at the event which was attended by the likes of Alicia Vikander and Zoë Kravitz. Emma's outing comes after the Mail on Sunday revealed last month that they and Rami Malek quietly split up after a love affair lasting nearly two years. Sources said Emma, who found fame and won a Golden Globe after playing Princess Diana in The Crown, has been separated 'for some time' from Rami, 43, who got an Oscar for his turn as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. The couple have not commented on their separation and, despite several appearances together on the red carpet at premieres, they have been notoriously private about their relationship. In a magazine interview last May, Corrin even declined to speak about their relationship. Malek was equally vague, describing Corrin as 'fascinating' and once revealing that Corrin cooked him a surprise Thanksgiving dinner, 'trimmings and all', that 'blew him away'. Corrin – who came out as queer in 2021 and identifies as non-binary, using the pronouns they/them – said the 'vitriol' targeted at their gender identity was 'worse than I anticipated', adding: 'Even though we like to think we're in a progressive society, a lot of what we're seeing is increasingly a step back.' They were first spotted together at a Bruce Springsteen concert in London in July 2023, just a few months after Rami had broken up with Lucy Boynton, 31, his co-star in the Queen biopic. As their romance developed, they were seen kissing at a restaurant in Margate, Kent, where Emma owns a home. They reportedly moved in together after buying a £5million mansion in Hampstead, north London. The couple have not commented on their separation and, despite several appearances together on the red carpet at premieres, they have been notoriously private about their relationship [pictured in February 2024] It is not clear whether Emma or Rami, who went on to play Bond villain Lyutsifer Safin in No Time To Die, still live in the house or plan to sell it. Emma is busy filming the Netflix adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, playing heroine Elizabeth Bennet opposite Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy. Rami is in just-released spy drama The Amateur, playing a CIA decoder out for revenge after terrorists kill his wife, and is also set to appear in Nuremberg, a drama about the Nazi war trials, as US psychiatrist Douglas Kelley. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon and One Day star Leo Woodall.

Alicia Vikander puts on a leggy display in a black disc-embellished mini dress as she joins glamorous Zoë Kravitz at star-studded Moët Hennessy party in London
Alicia Vikander and Zoë Kravitz were dressed to impress as they attended the Moët Hennessy Dom Pérignon Revelations dinner party at Tate Modern in London on Thursday. Swedish actress Alicia, 36, looked sensational in a black disc-embellished mini dress that showcased her long, toned pins. She added height with a pair of pointed black court heels and styled her brunette tresses in loose waves for the evening. Keeping her accessories minimal to let the outfit take centre stage, Alicia completed her look with a radiant makeup palette. Meanwhile, Zoë, 36, looked phenomenal as she went braless in a black silk body, featuring a sleeveless design and a high neckline. She paired it with a classic black midi pencil skirt and added inches to her frame with pointed, shiny black slingback heels. To finish the look, she accessorised with a black leather croc-embossed belt and bold red drop earrings. The Batman star styled her short, dark hair in a sleek, wet look and opted for a glowing makeup palette as she posed alongside her pal. Also in attendance at the soirée were Elena Ora, David Mayer de Rothschild, Iggy Pop, Alison Mosshart, Damian Lewis, Tilda Swinton, Erin O'Connor, Jefferson Hack, and Vincent Chaperon. Alicia's appearance at the event comes after she and Elizabeth Olsen attended a special screening of The Assessment at The Rhymers Club in New York. The actress and Marvel star, both 36, are starring together in the dystopian sci-fi flick, which was released in US cinemas in March. Promoting the new movie in America then, Alicia looked nothing short of incredible in a figure-hugging black maxi dress, which boasted a high neckline and shoulder cut-outs. She added inches to her height with a pointy pair of heels and swept her long brunette tresses back into a slick bun. The actress opted for a glowing palette of makeup to elevate her natural beauty and accessorised with a slew of sparkling diamante earrings. Meanwhile, Zoë styled her short, dark hair in a sleek, wet look and opted for a glowing makeup palette as she beamed alongside pal Tilda Swinton She posed up a storm alongside Elizabeth, who dazzled in a navy PVC gown, which cinched in at the waist before flowing out into a long pleated skirt. She wore her dark locks in a naturally straight style and added a glamorous swipe of makeup to complete her look for the screening. The duo seemed to be in high spirits as they posed together before heading inside to watch their movie. They then departed the venue together, with Alicia wrapping up warm in a tan trench coat and Elizabeth adding a black blazer jacket to shield themselves from the rain. The sci-fi movie is set in a not-so-distant future where parenthood is strictly controlled. It follows Mia (Elizabeth) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel), a successful couple who hope to become parents in a near future where resources are extremely limited and the government keeps firm control over reproduction. They are assigned an assessor named Virginia (Alicia Vikander), who moves into their home for seven days to evaluate whether they deserve to move forward in their parenting journey. What Mia and Aaryan are hoping is that a routine test quickly unravels into a psychological nightmare, forcing them to question the very foundations of their society and what it truly means to be human. It debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year and was acquired by Prime Video, and the UK release date is yet to be set.
