Nuggets Listed as Favorites to Land All-Defensive Wing Behind Lakers, Mavericks
Nuggets Listed as Favorites to Land All-Defensive Wing Behind Lakers, Mavericks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Nuggets, behind Nikola Jokic, are expected to compete in the Western Conference for the next several years despite the lack of All-Star talent around him. Advertisement Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray, Christian Braun, and Michael Porter Jr. are all quality players, although none of them are a reliable true second option on a championship team, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Jokic has the uncanny ability to make anyone around him suddenly become one of the better scorers in the league, although his impact on the defensive end is simply not on par with his offensive skillset. As a result, the Nuggets are expected to try and make an offseason move to bolster their defense. Jan 12, 2024; Denver, Colorado, USA; New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones (5) controls the ball ahead of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. (1) in the third quarter at Ball Arena. © Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images Denver has very limited cap space and doesn't boast the best in the way of trade assets, although they have the fifth-best odds to land Herb Jones in a trade this summer, according to offshore sportsbook Bovada. Advertisement Other teams in the mix include the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers, who have better trade packages available to land the All-Defensive forward. The Nuggets' payroll is very top-heavy, and they don't exactly boast expiring contracts that would be appealing to the rebuilding New Orleans Pelicans. They could send a package centered around Porter Jr., although the Pelicans would then need to match his salary. Jones averaged 11 points on 41.8 percent shooting from deep in 2023-24, his last healthy season. He played only 20 games last season as injuries plagued New Orleans, although he is generally seen as the very best perimeter defender in the NBA. Advertisement Unless Denver can shed some salary in a move before adding Jones, expect the Lakers and Mavericks, as well as the Spurs and Rockets, to remain the favorites. Where Memphis Grizzlies' Jaren Jackson Jr. landed on NBA's All-Defensive team
(This article was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.) Memphis Grizzlies big man Jaren Jackson Jr. secured his third career All-Defensive team selection on May 22. Jackson, 25, was selected as a second-team All-Defense member after a strong 2024-25 season. This was his first time being a member of the second team. Advertisement Jackson was first named a member of the All-Defensive first team after the 2021-22 season. He followed up that campaign by winning the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award during the 2022-23 season and making the All-Defensive first team again. Former Grizzlies wing Tony Allen holds the franchise record for most first-team All-Defensive finishes (three) and total All-Defensive finishes (six). Memphis finished 10th in defensive rating this season. When Jackson was in the game, those numbers were even better. According to NBA stats, the Grizzlies' defensive rating was 4.2 points better when Jackson was on the floor. As in recent years, the Grizzlies prided themselves on building a playmaking defense. Memphis finished third in blocks per game and seventh in steals. Advertisement Jackson's hands were all over that success. In 74 games, Jackson averaged 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per contest. He also ranked sixth in the NBA in stocks (steals and blocks combined) per game. Memphis was one of the NBA's elite defenses in the first half of the season, but its numbers drastically slipped in the second half. In late February, Jackson was a slight favorite over Cleveland Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Mobley went on to win the award, while Jackson finished seventh in voting. Jackson received 21 votes for the first team and 65 second-team votes among a panel of 100 media members for the All-Defensive teams. Another announcement with major implications for Jackson and the Grizzlies will take place May 23. The NBA will announce the three All-NBA teams. Advertisement If Jackson is named as a member of an All-NBA team, he will become eligible for what is often referred to as the "supermax" extension. This would be a five-year contract that could potentially make Jackson the highest-paid player in NBA history. If Jackson misses out on All-NBA he could still receive a contract extension this summer, but it would be capped at 10% above his current salary. NBA Announces All-Defensive Teams For 2024-25 Season
CLEVELAND, OHIO - MAY 13: Evan Mobley #4 of the Cleveland Cavaliers reacts after making a ... More three-point basket against the Indiana Pacers during the third quarter in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Second Round NBA Playoffs at Rocket Arena on May 13, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by) The NBA has announced their All-Defensive first and second teams today, an honor awarded to the NBA's best defensive performers. In recent years, the position requirement was removed from all defensive teams, so the 10 best defenders according to the voters regardless of position were selected. This is the second season that defensive voting has been positionless. The first team members are as follows, Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels, Oklahoma City Thunder forward/guard Lu Dort, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley, and Houston Rockets guard Amen Thompson. The second team members are as follows, Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara, Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert, Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams, and Los Angeles Clippers center Ivica Zubac. Oklahoma City was the only team to have two members on the All-Defensive teams, and they will need them on their current run toward the title. There were many first timers this year, which shows just how talented the league's future is, especially on the defensive end. Congratulations to every player who received this honor.
