Woman fled after deadly Wichita crash because she ‘freaked out.' She's sentenced
A woman who fled after being involved in a deadly crash in west Wichita last summer will serve three years of probation for one count of leaving the scene of an accident. Peyton Allart, 20, pleaded guilty on March 14 to fleeing from the hit-and-run crash that killed 28-year-old Jaz D'Oray Brooks of Wichita at Central and McLean on June 23, 2024. If she fails to follow the conditions of her probation, Allart could be ordered to serve 31 months in prison, said Dan Dillon, a spokesman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office. Brooks was a passenger in the four-door Saturn that collided with Allart's Ford F-150 truck around 3:15 a.m. that morning. Allart told police she didn't see the car until it turned in front of her, according to a probable cause affidavit released in the case. She told police she left the scene of the crash and went to a friend's house because she 'freaked out,' the affidavit says. Brooks was pronounced dead shortly after the collision. His obituary describes him as an Emporia High School graduate who loved dancing and playing video games. He was 'a very loving compassionate man to everyone whose life he has touched,' it says. Police found the truck's license plate at the scene of the collision and used it to help track her down. While executing a search warrant on the truck, authorities found several alcohol containers, an open bottle of Captain Morgan, marijuana pipes and empty THC containers and more THC containers in Allart's purse, the affidavit says. Initially, Allart was charged with failing to stop at an accident, transporting an open container and underage purchase or consumption of an alcoholic beverage, but the latter two counts were dismissed as part of her plea agreement, court records show. In a written motion, her attorney said Allart moved to Wichita from Colorado to attend college on academic and athletic scholarships and that her actions the night of the crash were 'inconsistent with her reputation as a caring and compassionate person.' Sedgwick County District Judge Chrystal Krier handed down the sentence Friday morning. Probation was recommended in her plea agreement.

Woman avoids jail for fatal hit-and-run in Wichita
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 20-year-old woman has been sentenced for a hit-and-run crash that killed a man last June. Peyton Allart will not have to do any jail time if she does not violate probation. The crash happened at Central and McLean shortly after 3 a.m. on June 23, 2024. Police said a pickup crashed into a car and then fled. Jaz D'Oray Brooks, 28, of Wichita, was a passenger in the car. He died at the scene. The driver of the car was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
