Man charged with giving booze to underage Pirates fan who fell onto field: reports

A 21-year-old has been charged with providing alcohol to the Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell from the stands onto the field last month, according to multiple reports. Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old former college football player, was identified as the man who fell more than 20 feet onto the right field warning track. According to reports, Ethan Kirkwood was charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor. WTAE cited a criminal complaint that highlighted surveillance video that showed Kirkwood and Markwood with alcohol several times. The complaint said Kirkwood admitted buying Markwood alcohol. Pittsburgh police did not immediately respond to an email from Fox News Digital. Markwood lay on the dirt in right field after flipping multiple times through the air during the seventh inning of a Pirates' game against the Chicago Cubs. The 20-year-old broke his neck, clavicle and back in the fall, but Markwood says he is "all right" despite a long road to recovery. "I can't really sleep. I have a lot of back pain," he told TribLive. Markwood described his injuries as "broken everything," which also included a swollen hand. "I think when I get home, I'll just put ice on it," he added. After the accident, Markwood was rushed to Allegheny General Hospital's trauma unit, where he was in critical condition at one point. Pittsburgh Public Safety labeled what happened an accident, and fans sitting near Markwood said he had gotten excited about a Pirates' rally during the game and proceeded to take his shirt off and pour beer on himself before the fall, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Markwood played for two Division II football programs, Walsh University and Wheeling University. He played at Wheeling in 2023, appearing in four games, according to the team's site. Major renovation and expansion project underway at Allegheny General Hospital's emergency department

A $43 million project is underway that will renovate and expand Allegheny General Hospital's emergency department. Allegheny Health Network announced the project, worth $43 million and consisting of 36,000 square feet, is expected to be complete by the end of 2027. Allegheny General Hospital President Dr. Imran Qadeer said the new facility will be state-of-the-art and will "enable AGH's caregivers to provide the highest level of care to all patients who come through the emergency department's doors." AHN says the new emergency department will have 57 treatments rooms with 48 patient beds and open sight lines that will help maximize efficiency for both care and for patient safety. "At AGH, we are committed to providing exceptional care and services for every emergency health need, and this new facility will greatly expand our capacity to do so," Dr. Qadeer said. "It will be a facility that better accommodates the growing demand for emergency services and empowers one of the best emergency medicine teams in the country to excel in meeting that demand." AHN says the expansion and renovation work will be done in five different stages so that patient care is minimally disrupted. The first phase, focused on a new waiting area and a space for patients waiting for test results is expected to be completed by this fall. The second phase of construction will include relocations the trauma and resuscitation rooms and six trauma bays will be equipped with expanded technology and will be able to be converted into negative pressure rooms. AHN didn't detail the third, fourth, or fifth phases of the project.

During a press conference also on Wednesday, Allegheny General Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Al Philp said Markwood has sustained injuries to his skull, brain, spine, both sides of his ribs, and his lungs, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Family members of Kavan Markwood, the Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell 21 feet from his seat in right field onto the warning track at PNC Park last week, and Allegheny General Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Al Philp have shared an update about Markwood's ongoing recovery. Dr. Philp noted that Markwood sustained injuries to several parts of his body, including his skull, brain, spine, both sides of his ribs, and his lungs. He's at a point now where he's off the breathing machine, he's out of the intensive care unit, and he's preparing to move to the next step, which will be physical therapy rehab," Dr. Philp said. "Seeing him recover so quickly has really been gratifying, frankly, ahead of schedule from what we would have anticipated given the real severity of his injuries." While Markwood will require differing therapies to rehabilitate his injuries, Dr. Philp noted that cognitive rehab, because of the brain injuries, will be one of the most critical aspects of his recovery. Markwood can talk, walk, and perform simple tasks, like using the restroom, but Dr. Philp said pain is still obviously evident. "It's painful, even in a young, healthy person; it's going to take a while to heal," Dr. Philp noted. "He's able to talk to us and, as I've said, has made really remarkable progress." Doctors believe the rehabilitation process should begin "soon." "As quickly as you can move [someone with critical injuries], they start to benefit immediately." "He's a good person" Taryn Markwood, Kavan's sister, and her aunt Julie spoke on behalf of the family. Markwood's sister expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support in the wake of the incident, thanking the first responders, other medical professionals, and community members who have directly assisted or sent well wishes to the family. "We want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has kept Kavan in their thoughts and prayers," Taryn said. "Kavan has always been full of surprises, and we are thrilled to see him making excellent progress every day. He continues to demonstrate his incredible strength." Taryn emphasized that she didn't want Kavan to be judged by others based on the actions in the video. "He's a good person, and for people to judge him from an accident is messed up." Kavan's aunt, Julie, said family members have expressed a desire for privacy as Markwood continues the rehabilitation process. Family members will continue to provide updates when available. "Kavan is just the epitome of strength. We are so grateful for everything, and as Tayrn said, these things, the offerings of support and financial assistance, is really going to help support some things," Juile said. Investigation into the fall continues While the exact cause of Markwood's accident remains unclear, there has been discussion that the 20-year-old may have been intoxicated and celebrating an RBI double from Andrew McCutchen when he fell. However, according to a Pirates spokesperson, Markwood showed no signs of intoxication at the time of the fall. The spokesperson went on to say that Markwood was in a group of four people; it was determined by looking into credit card receipts that one of the people in his group purchased alcoholic drinks legally four times. The Pirates believe that Markwood drank two beers throughout the game. While one fan said Markwood appeared intoxicated, others said he was conversing naturally and did not exhibit any boisterous behavior. One fan told the club that Markwood stood up, excited about the play, and toppled over the wall. The Pirates say they do not believe Markwood showed any intoxicated behavior entering the park. The club prohibited two fans from entering Tuesday night for being drunk, but Markwood was not one of them. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is investigating the fall. and contributed to this report.

(Photo by) Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old man who fell 21 feet onto the warning track at a Pittsburgh Pirates game, took his first steps on Monday since the fall. This is according to the organizer of a GoFundMe page raising money for his recovery, Jennifer Phillips. "Kav took his first steps today!" Phillips wrote. "It's a slow slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone's spirits." Advertisement The update is the first since Phillips wrote on Saturday that Markwood was "awake, alert, and able to speak." That update to his status was the first since Markwood's fall from the bleachers on Wednesday at Pittsburgh's PNC Park left him in critical condition. Markwood fell over the outfield railing 21 above the field during the seventh inning of Pittsburgh's game against Chicago Cubs. He flipped multiple times in his fall and landed on the warning track below, where he remained motionless for several minutes as medical staff from both teams tended to him. Markwood was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. Pittsburgh Public Safety later announced that Markwood was in critical condition and that the fall was "being treated accidental in nature." Phillips, who introduced herself on the GoFundMe page as the mother of Markwood's girlfriend, wrote on Monday that Markwood "still has a long way to go" while detailing his injuries that include a broken neck. "He still has a long way to go — he's dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead," Phillips wrote." But he's showing real strength, and we're staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital." An article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review identified Markwood on Thursday, a day after his fall. Markwood played football at South Allegheny High School and graduated in 2022. He went on to play football at Walsh University and Wheeling University, both Division II programs.
