Clippers thrash Nuggets, win first playoff game in Intuit Dome history

Clippers guard James Harden looks to pass the ball under pressure from three Denver Nuggets defenders Thursday night at the Intuit Dome. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) He insisted that his group could play better and had to play better even though the Clippers snatched home-court advantage away from the Nuggets by winning Game 2 in Denver. That didn't matter to Clippers coach Tyronn Lue. Advertisement What mattered to Lue was his team pushing itself to a higher level against the Nuggets. Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard scores in front of Nuggets center Nikola Jokic Thursday night at the Intuit Dome. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) The Clippers found another gear, fielding a stingy defense and a balanced scoring attack that helped them build a 31-point lead en route to a convincing 117-83 win over the Nuggets on Thursday night. The rowdy crowd celebrated the first playoff game ever hosted at the Intuit Dome. Six Clippers scored in double figures and that was a big reason they now have a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference first-round playoff series. After a slow start to the series, Norman Powell appears to have found his groove, scoring 20 points on seven-for-12 shooting. Advertisement Kawhi Leonard had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes. James Harden scored all 20 of his points in the first half to go along with nine assists and six rebounds. Ivica Zubac had 19 points and nine rebounds, Nicholas Batum came off the bench to score 12 points, doing his damage by going four for six from the three-point line, and Derrick Jones Jr. had 10 points. 'We can play better, we got to play better,' Lue said before tipoff. 'We have to play better, and that's our mindset. Like, we got a win there, but I think we still can play better.' Fans cheer as the scoreboard shows the Clippers defeated the Denver Nuggets 117-83 in Game 3 of their playoff series Thursday at Intuit Dome. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) The Clippers played perhaps their best defense of the series, holding the Nuggets to 40.3% shooting and 26.9% from three-point range while keeping their offense out of sorts all game. Advertisement And so with four minutes and 34 seconds left and the Nuggets about to go down by 26 points, Nuggets interim coach David Adelman pulled his starters to get them ready for Game 4 at the Intuit Dome on Saturday afternoon. Nuggets center Nikola Jokic had his second straight triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists, but the Clippers overcame his outstanding play. Harden set the tone early for the Clippers, his shot-making and passing allowing them to open a seven-point lead to end the first quarter. Harden scored 11 of the Clippers' final 16 points in the first and assisted on three more when he found Batum for a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left in the first. Harden had 20 points in the first half on six-for-10 shooting and three for five from three-point range. Advertisement It allowed the Clippers to build a 20-point lead in the second quarter, adding to it as the crowd cheered on the dominant performance. Sign up for the L.A. Lakers confident 'winning on small details' will power series comeback against Minnesota

Lakers guard Austin Reaves scores after driving past Minnesota's Mike Conley, left, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker during the Lakers' 117-95 loss in Game 1 of the first round of the NBA playoffs on Saturday. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) Austin Reaves was tired Monday, the Lakers having just wrapped up a really hard practice. In the first minutes of Game 1 Saturday evening, he was tired too. As Reaves walked off the court for the first time, his chest heaved as he grabbed for air and he slumped to grab his shorts, telltale signs that he'd given a lot of effort in his first shift. Advertisement But giving effort and playing hard, at least internally in the Lakers' dictionary, have two different definitions. And in what became a theme in the Lakers' series-opening loss to the Timberwolves, the Lakers figured out ways to do the one and not enough of the other. Read more: Hernández: After a Game 1 meltdown, the Lakers should still win their series but must adapt fast It's why it might sound simplistic when JJ Redick said the Lakers' biggest adjustments start with them 'playing harder and being organized,' but one without the other won't lead them to the kinds of results they need Tuesday. Asked what it looks like when the Lakers are 'playing hard,' Reaves said it's about more than flying around the court with no greater purpose other than to sweat. It's energy, sure, but it's focused, intentional and tough. Advertisement 'Just think it's the how connected we are when everybody's giving it everything they have on every possession. You're more locked into every detail on both ends of the floor. And that's what the playoffs is about, winning on small details. Unfortunately we didn't do it the first game.' Asked about potential adjustments, Redick said he would share only one. 'Not giving away our adjustments — got to play harder,' Redick said. Lakers guard Luka Doncic shoots over Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in Game 1 on Saturday. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) The Lakers didn't spend a lot of time wondering why in Game 1 of a playoff game, at home even, they didn't play hard enough, but a look at their season shows some of the ways it could've been predicted. Advertisement When the team was faced with a long break while games were postponed because of the Los Angeles area wildfires, they managed just 102 points in a loss to the Spurs. After the seven-day All-Star break, the Lakers scored 97 points against Charlotte. And after he missed two weeks, LeBron James' return to the Lakers was spoiled by a complete defensive no-show where the team allowed 146 points. And an optimist would point out the Lakers won 12 of 14 after the loss to the Spurs and then won eight-straight after losing to the Hornets. And while James' ramp-up after his injury return included a clunker in Orlando and a buzzer-beater in Chicago, the team quickly found its footing in good wins against Houston and in Memphis and Oklahoma City. The other part of the equation, organization, means more than the Lakers' point guard calling plays, Redick said. Read more: 'We'll get better.' Lakers vow to improve after blowout Game 1 loss to Timberwolves Advertisement 'No, it's just all of the normal stuff that we try to do and when we do it, we're really good,' he said. 'Being organized is screening. Being organized is getting to the proper spacing. Being organized is getting the corners filled after makes and misses. That's being organized.' In Game 1, the Lakers played a lot more like the team that lost to the Spurs, the Hornets and the Bulls than the one that performed its best in big games. And they looked that way because the Lakers didn't 'play hard' in the right ways. Because when they are, you can tell. "We're communicating, giving second and third efforts. Teams getting one shot at the rim, you know, not two,' Dorian Finney-Smith said. 'I wouldn't say we wasn't playing hard because our first shot defense was good, you know, we just wasn't getting those loose balls. They were first to the ball. And that don't mean it wasn't playing hard. It just means they was just a little bit more into it. And we got to do the same." Pink Moon: When To See Spring's First Full Moon Rise In Blaze Of Color

The first full moon of spring — the pink moon — will light up the night sky on Friday, April 12, 2025. Although it won't actually appear pink, this full moon is named after the early blooming pink phlox flowers, which signal the arrival of springtime. Rising gracefully into the eastern sky during dusk, April's full moon will be bathed in soft hues of orange as it emerges on the horizon. Fisherman and pier walkers have a scenic view of the setting full Pink Moon, named after blooming ... More wildflowers, at dawn at the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach Wednesday, April 5, 2023. The Pink Moon will be at its brightest at 9:34 PM April 5. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) The pink moon will reach its full phase at 8:23 p.m. EDT on Saturday, April 12, 2025. That almost coincides with the rising of the full moon in eastern North America just an hour before, a relatively rare occurrence. A full moon is at its most breathtaking as it rises in the east just after sunset, appearing larger and more vibrant due to the 'moon illusion,' which fools the human brain into thinking it larger than it really is, according to NASA. For the best view of the pink moon, find an unobstructed vantage point facing the eastern horizon. Elevated locations or open fields are ideal for catching the moon as it rises. All that's necessary is the naked eye fine, though binoculars or a telescope can reveal details on the lunar surface. Despite its name, the pink moon won't actually appear pink. Its name comes from the seasonal pink wildflowers — known as creeping phlox — that bloom in early spring in some parts of North America, according to NASA. This full moon has also been called the sprouting grass moon, fish moon and egg moon. The exact time of moonrise — the best time to see the full moon — depends on your location: The exact date of the Christian festival of Easter is determined by the lunar calendar. For the Western Church, Easter Sunday is the Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Since the equinox was on March 20 this year, shortly after a total lunar eclipse (a full moon) on March 13/14, it must come on the Sunday after the following full moon, the pink moon on April 12, making it the paschal moon, according to Almanac. Easter Sunday therefore falls on Sunday, April 20. After the pink moon, the next full moon will be the flower moon on Monday, May 12, 2025. It will be the second full moon of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. There are 12 full moons in 2025, including three supermoons (full moons that are closest to Earth) and two total lunar eclipses (the first on March 13/14 and the second on Sept 7/8.)

See A ‘Shooting Stars,' A ‘Pink Moon' And Mars: April's Night Sky

The Lyrid meteor shower will peak on Monday-Tuesday, April 21-22, 2025. On the first day of each month, I pick out North America's celestial highlights for the month ahead (which also applies to northern hemisphere mid-northern latitudes). Check my main feed for more in-depth articles on stargazing, astronomy, eclipses and more. With both a lunar and solar eclipse, March was a busy month for sky-watchers. As we move into spring in the Northern Hemisphere, April will be quieter, but with some fabulous moon views, Venus becoming a very bright 'Morning Star' and a full 'Pink Moon' rising amid the season's first meteor shower, there are still plenty of reasons to look up. Here's everything you need to know about stargazing in April 2025: When: Tuesday, April 1, 2025 Where: Western sky Look west after unset for a delicate 17%-lit waxing crescent moon. Do so with binoculars, and you'll see that just above the moon, the sky is busy with stars. That's the Pleiades star cluster, also called the "Seven Sisters" for its seven bright stars. To the upper-left of the pair, you'll see Jupiter. When: Saturday, April 12, 2025 Where: Eastern sky Rising during dusk tonight will be the full "Pink Moon," so-called for the sprouting of the pink moss phlox, according to Almanac. As well as being the full moon that determines the date of Easter Sunday, this is also a relatively distant, so small-looking, full moon — a "micro moon" as opposed to a "supermoon." Bright star Spica will appear next to the moon. Fisherman and pier walkers have a scenic view of the setting full Pink Moon, named after blooming ... More wildflowers, at dawn at the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach Wednesday, April 5, 2023. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) When: Monday-Tuesday, April 21-22, 2025 Where: Eastern sky The first meteor shower of the new season, the Lyrids, will peak overnight on April 21-22. That's good timing because a waxing gibbous moon will set before midnight, leaving a dark moonless sky for the 10-20 "shooting stars" per hour. When: Late April 2025 Where: Eastern sky After dominating the post-sunset night sky for all of 2025 so far, Venus dipped into the glare of the sun in late March. Come late April, the planet will be surging in brightness as it climbs into the pre-dawn night sky. See it in its new apparition as the 'Morning Star' by casting your eyes east about an hour before sunrise. The times and dates given apply to mid-northern latitudes. For the most accurate location-specific information, consult online planetariums like Stellarium and use a sunrise and sunset calculator for where you are. Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
