Families send off Iowa National Guard soldiers in Iowa City for yearlong deployment
During his yearlong deployment with the Iowa National Guard, Jason Vogel will miss the birth of his first biological child. But in the sacrifice, he also is achieving a lifelong goal of serving his country overseas. Vogel reenlisted after more than a decade in the National Guard for the opportunity to deploy and 'support our country one last time before I hang up my boots,' he said. The Iowa National Guard is holding 24 community-based send-off ceremonies Wednesday through Friday this week in honor of about 1,800 Iowa soldiers deploying to the Middle East. Vogel, of Ames, is one of 103 troops in the 133rd Infantry, B Company, sent off Wednesday from the Melrose Readiness Center in Iowa City. The soldiers will support Operation Inherent Resolve, a military operation to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The soldiers will contribute to the operation by joining coalition forces to provide security, support partner nations and assist efforts to maintain stability in the region, according to the Iowa National Guard. Another send-off ceremony will be held in Cedar Rapids at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Rapids Armory for nine soldiers. An additional 105 soldiers will be sent off during a ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday at the Armory in Cedar Rapids. B Company began their journey to Louisiana Wednesday evening where they will receive training for about a month before continuing to the countries of Kuwait, Iraq or Syria, Capt. Brandon Donoho said. Donoho said the send-off ceremony is 'a first step on a path that leads us home.' The families of the soldiers have 'our eternal gratitude,' he said. 'We're going to protect the force, we're going to complete the mission, and we're going to come home … We have trained for this, and we are ready. We have a proud legacy to continue, and I know we will not fail,' Donohue said. Retired Sgt. Leo Pins — who deployed four times when he was in the service — urged the soldiers to write letters home. 'They will keep that with them forever,' he said. 'Know that your soldiers will be taking care of each other. They'll be watching out for each other,' Pins said during the ceremony. Vogel's wife, Allyson Vogel, said it was one of her biggest fears that he would be deployed during the birth of their child, a girl they plan to name Evelyn. 'God has a sense of humor,' she said. Allyson said she is trying to continue 'calmly and carefully,' remaining strong for her two children — Jason Vogel's stepchildren — Connor Rhodes, 7, and Johanna Glauner, 3. 'If I break down and just completely lose it, I don't want to scare them,' Allyson said. Allyson said she is 'putting my trust in God,' engaging in support groups for families of deployed soldiers and reminding her husband that he has a family who loves him and expects him to return home safely. Devon Kregel, of North Liberty, hugged his five-month-old son Jameson close ahead of the send-off ceremony. His wife Addison and son Logan, 8, also gathered near him. 'I'm excited to go. It obviously stinks leaving the little ones, but it's what we signed up for,' he said. Valerie and Eric Key, of Marion, tearfully said goodbye to their son Ryan Key, 19, who is deploying. Valerie said she's nervous and proud. Jerrell Hinson, 19, of Tiffin, said he's overwhelmed to be deploying. 'It's sad, leaving. But I know I'm doing it for a good cause,' he said. ___ © 2025 The Gazette Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

Florida nurse accused of violent cheesy nachos assault on her wife
Police in Florida say they arrested a nurse accused of beating her wife and shoving a handful of cheesy nachos down her pants. Keep up with the latest in + news and politics. Allyson Swan, 39, a registered nurse in Port St. Lucie, was taken into custody for the incident in the early morning of May 3. The Port St. Lucie Police Department said they took her into custody after responding to a welfare request on the alleged victim. RELATED: Florida sugar scion allegedly beat woman because the two were seated next to a gay couple According to the arrest report from PSLP, officers arrived around 3 a.m. at the residence of Swan and the 40-year-old alleged victim, whose name was not released. Police said Swan denied any physical altercation or violence but instead claimed she had to barricade herself in the bedroom because the victim 'was in a drunken rage' and upset because she did not want to watch TV with Swan. She also claimed her wife made several holes in the wall but again denied any 'physical altercation' between the couple. Her wife told police a far different story. She said she was in the kitchen making nachos while Swan was playing video games in the living room. RELATED: Woman allegedly kills wife, stabs mother-in-law with sword 'Allyson told her she shouldn't be eating this late and made a comment about her weight,' the reporting officer wrote. 'The two began arguing and Allyson walked over to [the victim], grabbed a handful of the cheesy nachos, and shoved them down the back of [the victim's] pants.' The two began arguing, and the victim walked to the bedroom to change her pants. She told police that's when her wife attacked her physically, slamming her against the wall in the hall just outside their bedroom, and then slamming her face first onto the floor. '[The victim] stated Allyson pinned her face down onto the floor and shoved her fingers into either side of her mouth and hooked them like a fish,' the report continues. 'Allyson then continued to batter her by grabbing her head and slamming it into the floor multiple times. At some point, Allyson threw water on [her wife].' RELATED: Accused neo-Nazi describes killing gay Jewish student Swan used the attack to assert her dominance in their relationship, according to the police report. 'Throughout the incident, [the victim] stated Allyson made several comments about making sure [the victim] knows Allyson is in charge and that [the victim] was not behaving.' At this point, Swan reportedly noticed that her wife was on an open telephone call with a friend, who had listened to the assault. The victim told police she had called the friend after Swan had shoved the nachos down her backside but before Swan turned violent. Swan backed off when the friend called the police, the report says. RELATED: Florida documents reveal more about Ziegler threesomes Police said they found the scene and evidence corroborated the story told by the victim, including yellow cheesy stains on the wall that matched her backside. They reported a yellow substance consistent with cheesy nacho sauce on the interior backside of the victim's leggings. The victim also had a hematoma (a pooling of blood under the skin) on her forehead and scratches on her body consistent with her version of events. Swan was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery that caused bodily harm. She was released on $250 bail and has her next court appearance in June.

Kathryn Newton to Star in and Produce "Just One Day" TV Adaptation
Yara Sameh "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" star Kathryn Newton is set to star and produce the Amazon series "Just One Day", based on the Gayle Forman YA romance novels that comprise two books and a follow-up novella. Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin are attached to adapt and create the series. The blurb for the first book, the 2013-published "Just One Day": Allyson Healey whose life is exactly like her suitcase — packed, planned, ordered. Then on the last day of her three-week post-graduation European tour, she meets Willem. A free-spirited, roving actor, Willem is everything she's not, and when he invites her to abandon her plans and come to Paris with him, Allyson says yes. This uncharacteristic decision leads to a day of risk and romance, liberation and intimacy: 24 hours that will transform Allyson's life. When unforeseen circumstances separate Allyson and Willem after their whirlwind day together, they are left to embark on their individual journeys. We follow Allyson over the next year as she struggles to fit in at college. Willem never leaves her mind and she finds herself constantly drawn back to Willem and that one day. And so begins a quest: one to discover herself and to discover love. "Just One Day", released in August 2013, tells the story from Allyson's point of view, while "Just One Year", published in September 2014, is told from Willem's POV. The series has been sold into 19 territories and sold just under 1 million copies. PKM Productions' Patrick Moran and Lynley Bird brought the project into Amazon where it is set up under their first-look deal and they will be producing the project. Forman and Anna Mastro are also attached to produce. In addition to starring in the $476 million global-grossing Quantumania as Casse Lang, the daughter to Paul Rudd's character, Newton also starred in the $450M global-grossing "Pokemon: Detective Pikachu" as well as Focus Features' "Lisa Frankenstein" from Zelda Williams, and Radio Silence's vampire horror pic "Abigail". Other credits include "The Map of Tiny Perfect Things" and the body-swap slasher "Freaky" opposite Vince Vaughn, as well as the Netflix series "The Society" and Universal's R-rated comedy film "Blockers", which world premiered at SXSW in 2018.
