Yunus Aide's Brazen Call: ‘Bangladesh Should Occupy Northeast If India Attacks Pakistan'

Last Updated: Alm Fazlur Rahman, a former head of the Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh), made the provocative remarks in a social media post. A retired Bangladeshi army officer with close ties to the current interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus ignited controversy by suggesting the occupation of India's northeastern states in the event of an Indian military response to Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. Maj Gen (retired) ALM Fazlur Rahman, a former head of the Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh), made the provocative remarks in a social media post, proposing that Bangladesh should start talks with China for a joint military system. 'If India attacks Pakistan, Bangladesh should occupy seven states of North East India. In this regard, I think it is necessary to start a discussion on a joint military system with China," he said in a Facebook post in Bengali. ALM Fazlur Rahman is the chairperson of the National Independent Commission of Inquiry probing the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) massacre. His statement comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan in the wake of the deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. The interim government of Bangladesh distanced itself from controversial comments made by ALM Fazlur Rahman, head of the BDR commission. Shafiqul Alam, press secretary at the Bangladesh chief adviser's office, clarified that ALM Fazlur Rahman's statements were made in his personal capacity. First Published: May 02, 2025, 12:51 IST
