Protests against Trinamool leader Alo Sarkar in Bengal over role in college panel
Fresh controversy has erupted around Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Alo Rani Sarkar after her name was found on the management committee of Nahata Jogendranath Mondal Smriti Mahavidyalaya in Bongaon, North 24 Parganas. The development has triggered protests from both the TMC's student wing and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).The row follows a Calcutta High Court ruling that dismissed Sarkar's election petition and declared her a Bangladeshi Bibek Chaudhuri had observed that although Sarkar claimed to be an Indian citizen, she had failed to acquire Indian citizenship under the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
Protesters are questioning how her name was proposed to the college management committee as an MLA, despite having lost the Bongaon Dakshin assembly election to BJP's Swapan Majumdar in 2021.
