New vid shows moments leading up to Pirates fan Kavan Markwood's horror 21ft plunge at game as family begs for prayers
NEW video captures the moments leading up to Pittsburgh Pirates fan Kavan Markwood's horror fall at a baseball game. Markwood, 20, was left with a broken neck and back following the tumble at last Wednesday's contest. 5 5 His family has begged for prayers as they provide updates on his health. The fall has been ruled accidental in nature, but new footage shows what happened before Markwood somersaulted over the railings. Video, seen by the CBS affiliate KDKA-TV, shows a shirtless Markwood jumping up in excitement. Clutching onto the metal rails, he then flipped over. He was celebrating an Andrew McCutchen double when he slipped over the railing. The accident happened during the seventh innings of the Pirates clash with the Chicago Cubs. Markwood was with a man and two women. He had two beers at the game but officials do not believe he was drunk at the time of the fall. Amy Thompson, who also attended the game, told the ABC affiliate WTAE-TV, the momentum from the fall took him over the railings. Markwood was rushed to the hospital after tumbling over the Clemente Wall at PNC Park. Baseball fan plunges more than 20 feet from stands at MLB game as players seen with heads in hands Jennifer Phillips, the mother of Markwood's girlfriend Alonna Brown, revealed on May 5 he had made his 'first steps," per a GoFundMe page that was created. But, she warned the football fan faced several obstacles. He has suffered a broken neck, clavicle, and back, according to Phillips. 'But he's showing real strength, and we're staying hopeful for a smooth recovery,' she wrote. 'This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.' Phillips shared another update, which said: 'Keep those prayers coming.' She shared a picture of Markwood and Alonna smiling and wearing headsets in a helicopter. Earlier this week, Alonna revealed Markwood is working to make his body 'stronger' every day. 'REAL STRENGTH' "At this time, he needs rest, peace, prayers, privacy, and all the positive thoughts and energy you can send as he continues on his journey,' she said. She shared a snap of the pair smiling the day after the accident. And, Markwood's sister, Taryn, revealed the family had hope. 'While Kav's journey is far from over, we are hopeful,' she said. The fundraiser set up in his name has raised more than $45,000. Markwood, a Minnesota Vikings fan, played football while at Walsh University and Wheeler University. During his time at Wheeler University, he appeared in five of the team's 11 games during his freshman year. 5 5

Fan who fell onto field at PNC Park during Pirates game takes first steps
The fan who fell onto the field at PNC Park less than a week ago, identified as Kavan Markwood, took his first steps on Monday since the incident, according to a post on a fundraiser set up by the mother of Markwood's girlfriend. Jennifer Phillips, who is the mother of Alonna Brown, said that Markwood's first steps since the fall 'definitely lifted everyone's spirits' but admitted that he 'still has a long way to go.' 'It's a slow slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win,' Phillips wrote. 'He's dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead. But he's showing real strength, and we're staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.' The incident happened during the seventh inning in a game Wednesday between the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. The 20-year-old fell from the right field wall onto the field and was listed in critical condition. Players from both teams could be seen kneeling down, while others put their hands on their heads in concern for Markwood. The fall is being treated as accidental, police have said. 'Thanks so much for all the love, support, and good vibes. It really means a lot as he keep giving his all to push forward. #KAVANSTRONG,' Phillips continued. The fundraiser organized to help assist with Markwood's medical bills has raised nearly $43,000 as of Tuesday morning. Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022. The school, in a post sent to CNN, said he was the team MVP of the football team and earned first team All-Conference honors: 'Kavan is best known for his resilience, strength, and kindness. He is a friend to all – someone who lifts others up and faces challenges with courage and grace.' Markwood played college football at Walsh University and Wheeling University.
