Rast wins slalom gold as Shiffrin misses out
SAALBACH: Camille Rast won slalom gold in a Swiss one-two with Wendy Holdener on Saturday as American Mikaela Shiffrin missed out on a record 16th career medal at the Alpine Skiing World Championships. Austria's Katharina Liensberger took the bronze on home snow in the last women's race of the 13-day championships in Saalbach. Shiffrin had been third after the first run but dropped back to finish fifth overall behind U.S. teammate Paula Moltzan in fourth. "Both runs were really different and really challenging and I just tried to have fun," said Rast, who was fastest from Liensberger after the first leg with Holdener fourth, after winning by 0.46 of a second. Holdener was fastest of all down the second run, with Moltzan next on the timesheets, to move into the medal positions. "I was tired, especially after the first two long weeks and after the giant slalom, so I took a rest day yesterday to somehow find the joy and the motivation to give full gas today and I'm happy it worked out," said Holdener. Shiffrin, who took a record-equalling 15th medal when she and downhill champion Breezy Johnson won the new women's team combined event on Tuesday, was only the 12th quickest in the deciding run. Saturday was the first time the world's most successful skier had failed to medal in slalom in seven championships. She won four golds in a row between 2013-19, silver in 2023 and bronze in 2021. Despite the miss, she said her race had been a "really good step forward" in her return to the piste from a puncture wound in her left abdomen suffered in a giant slalom crash in Killington, Vermont. "I think there are some obvious challenges that I face to keep improving in my skiing and maybe to get to the point where I can be fighting for podiums for the end of the season," she told Eurosport. Shiffrin in hunt for record 16th world championship medal
SAALBACH, Austria, Feb 15 (Reuters) - American Mikaela Shiffrin was in the hunt for a record 16th Alpine Skiing World Championships medal on Saturday after going third fastest in the first run of the final women's slalom led by Switzerland's Camille Rast. Shiffrin took her record-equalling 15th medal when she and downhill champion Breezy Johnson won the new women's team combined event on Tuesday. The most successful skier has yet to finish off the podium in her six previous world championship slaloms, winning four golds in a row between 2013-19, silver in 2023 and bronze in 2021. German skier Christl Cranz won 15 individual medals, a feat Shiffrin can equal, between 1934-39 when the championships were held annually. Rast set a time of 58.91 seconds in Saalbach with Austria's Katharina Liensberger, the 2021 champion, 0.58 slower on home snow. Shiffrin was 0.72 off the pace and Switzerland's Wendy Holdener fourth, 0.80 behind Rast. American Paula Moltzan was in fifth place but 1.55 off. "I feel pretty good about it," said Shiffrin of her run. "The hill is quite long, it's a good challenging hill. It keeps coming at you and the course-setting was great. "It was a big challenge to keep up with the pace and for me especially on the end of the course it's like 15 seconds longer than anything I've skied since before Killington so I don't have very much in my legs left. "I think this was some of the best skiing I've done lately." Shiffrin suffered a puncture wound in her left abdomen when she crashed in a giant slalom in Killington, Vermont, last November while chasing a record-extending 100th World Cup victory.

Austrian skier Haaser storms to world giant slalom gold
Austria's Raphael Haaser has kick-started a home party as he stormed to gold in the men's giant slalom at the Alpine Skiing World Championships after a superb second run. Switzerland's domination of the championships had been expected to continue on Friday with world and Olympic champion Marco Odermatt the pre-race favourite. But after the opening run raced in poor visibility, the 27-year-old Haaser jumped from fifth to the top of the leaderboard with a rip-roaring second descent. It was the biggest win of his career and delivered Austria's second gold medal of the championships on home snow and the first in the men's events. "It's just such an unbelievable day. Really happy with this race," said Haaser, whose best result in a World Cup giant slalom is seventh. "I think I was capable to ski in the top 10 permanently, but stepping on top of the podium, didn't expect that." When Haaser crossed the line for a combined time of 2min 39.71sec, there were still four more racers to come, including Odermatt and surprise first-run leader Timon Haugan of Norway. But Odermatt made too many mistakes as his chance of adding to his super-G gold disappeared and he finished fourth. When Haugan lost time in his second attempt, Haaser could start celebrating his first world title, having finished second behind Odermatt in the super-G. Swiss Thomas Tumler finished 0.23 seconds behind in second place with teammate Loic Meillard in third place.
