NEW YORK: Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, has met with Sigrid Kaag, who serves as Under-Secretary-General, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process ad interim, UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza. The meeting took place at the Permanent Mission's headquarters in New York. The meeting discussed the latest developments in the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, and emphasised the need to ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the brotherly Palestinian people.

During the meeting, they reviewed ways to enhance cooperation and partnership between the State of Qatar and Save the Children, particularly in light of the ongoing preparations for the Second World Summit for Social Development, which Qatar will host at the end of this year. Both sides affirmed the importance of coordinating efforts to empower children and youth and to ensure their rights to development and education.

Qatar reiterates support for Syria to help in achieving security, stability, and development

NEW YORK: The State of Qatar has reiterated its full support for the Syrian Arab Republic in ways that help achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, stability, and development, and positively impact the future of Syria and the region as a whole. This came in a statement delivered by Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani during the Security Council briefing on the item 'The Situation in the Middle East (Syria)', held at the UN headquarters in New York. She said that the State of Qatar welcomes the positive steps taken by the Syrian Arab Republic toward national consensus and the establishment of the rule of law and institutions, praising the Syrian government's openness to cooperating with various international and UN bodies, which is a clear commitment to playing a constructive role both regionally and internationally to achieve security, stability, and the protection of human rights. She noted that the State of Qatar continues its comprehensive support for the Syrian Arab Republic in the humanitarian, relief, recovery, and basic services sectors, which includes the ongoing supply of natural gas for electricity generation. She pointed out that, in continuation of the joint efforts by the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support the recovery of the Syrian Arab Republic's economy, Syria's arrears to the World Bank, amounting to approximately $15 million, have been settled. This step will contribute to the resumption of World Bank programs in Syria, support the rebuilding of institutions, enhance capacity development, and promote policymaking and reform to drive development forward, she explained. She further noted that the State of Qatar continues to represent and safeguard the interests of the Syrian Arab Republic within the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), with the aim of promoting constructive dialogue between Syria and the international community in the areas of the Organisation mandate. She added that the State of Qatar affirms that improving the economic and humanitarian conditions of the Syrian people must remain a top priority for the international community. Therefore, the State of Qatar welcomes the intention of President of the United States HE Donald Trump to lift sanctions on the Syrian Arab Republic, considering it an important step toward supporting stability and prosperity in Syria, she said, adding that Qatar expresses its full appreciation for the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkiye in this regard.
