Schoolboy, 12, dies from horrific head lice infestation after fighting for life

Amador Flores Vargas was rushed to hospital after being bitten by the blood-sucking bugs, but he was unable to fight off the severe infection A 12-year-old schoolboy has died after a horrific head lice infection led to septic shock and liver failure. Amador Flores Vargas's family rushed the young lad to hospital after noticing he was severely dehydrated and had a fever that couldn't be brought under control. ‌ For two weeks, the boy fought for his life while a typhus-spreading bacterial infection called rickettsiosis ravaged his body. It had been transmitted by blood-sucking lice in his hometown of Sabinas, in the Mexican state of Coahuila. ‌ Amador was treated in Coahuila's Mother and Child Hospital, but doctors found he was already suffering from advanced liver failure and septic shock caused by a massive louse infestation. Despite being pumped full of emergency antibiotics, Amador's condition rapidly worsened and he died on June 2, to the horror of his family. Hospital director Francisco Iribarren explained in a press conference that the boy had been infected for at least eight days before he was brought to the clinic. "The young man arrived in very compromised conditions; he had liver alterations, failure in platelet production and an advanced septicaemia," he added. Because of the rarity of the disease, local authorities have imposed a sanitary cordon on the family's neighbourhood to prevent the parasite from spreading, with a pest extermination team searching for further infestations. And epidemiologist Alfredo De León Camacho has recommended that the local population seek immediate medical attention if they present symptoms including persistent fever, rashes or general discomfort, especially if they have recently come in contact with parasites. ‌ Rickettsiosis is caused by bacteria from the Rickettsia genus, which can be spread to humans by bites from fleas, ticks, mites or lice. If left untreated, the infection can lead to blood poisoning and become life-threatening or even fatal. Other symptoms of rickettsiosis include headache, swollen lymph nodes, muscle pain, stomach pain, fatigue and nausea and vomiting. While rickettsial diseases occur all around the world, in some areas certain types are more prevalent. In the United States, the most common is rocky mountain spotted fever, which is spread by infected adult ticks. In South Africa, Korea and large cities in Russia, Rickettsialpox is more usual to see - spread by mites that live on mice. ‌ Meanwhile, Boutonneuse fever is concentrated in Mediterranean countries like Spain, Italy and Israel, commonly transmitted by ticks carried by dogs and cats. And Murine typhus is prevalent all around the world, especially in cities with high rat infestations. While rickettsial diseases are rare in the UK, they can appear in the population as a result of travelling to a country where the infection is present. Typhus can be transmitted by infected fleas, mites and lice that live on small animals like dogs, cats, rats, mice and squirrels, and can be carried by humans on their skin, hair and clothes. Typhus is mostly found in Asia, South America and parts of Africa, particularly in places where public hygiene is poor, living conditions are typically overcrowded, or there is plenty of grassland or bushes for fleas and lice to hide in. The NHS explains that while there is no vaccine to prevent typhus, travellers can lower their risk of being infected by wearing long-sleeved tops and trousers, using insect repellent containing DEET, washing regularly, and changing clothes frequently when visiting areas with high rates of typhus.

At least 7 vehicles 'heavily damaged' in fire behind Wallace Volvo Cars in Stuart

STUART — A multi-car fire at the Wallace Volvo Cars dealership in Stuart May 15 resulted in damage to at least seven cars, according to fire rescue officials. No one was injured. The fire started behind the dealership, in the 2600 block of Southeast Federal Highway, in a lot where employees park and where new inventory arrives. One of the cars belonged to Aaron Amador, a sales consultant at Wallace Volvo. He said his Toyota 4Runner was parked in the lot and a technician at the dealership had also parked in the lot. Amador said the backseat of one of the cars was smoking and when the door of the car was opened, air rushed in and the fire spread to the car next to it. "By the time they ran in to tell us that there was a fire, I grabbed my keys to move my car and it was already on fire," Amador said. The fire was determined to be accidental, not a crime, according to Stuart Police spokesperson Lt. Brian Bossio. The seven cars that burned in the fire had heavy fire damage and two vehicles nearby had minor damage, according to Stuart Fire Rescue Operations Chief Jonathan Huneycutt. US Typhon missile system in Philippines is a subtle headache for China

MANILA, Philippines — China released its first white paper on national security this week amid what Beijing calls 'intensifying geopolitics' in the region marked by the deployment of an 'intermediate-range missile system.' The 23-page 'China's National Security in the New Era,' released in Mandarin by the State Council Information Office, outlined the country's security issues in a region it described as mired in 'intensifying geopolitics, hegemonism and the return of Cold War mentality.' The Chinese government has for years made public its defense white papers, but it's the first time it has released a national security document that touches on a range of security threats, from maritime and territorial disputes, terrorism, biotechnology, and food security. Asia-Pacific, the document noted, faces 'severe' security challenges amid an escalating international arms race. China claimed 'some countries' strengthened military alliances in the region, wooed regional partners, built 'small groups,' and deployed military capabilities such as the 'intermediate-range missile system.' While China did not mention any country, the U.S. deployed last year a Typhon missile launcher in the Philippines as part of annual joint exercises between American and Filipino troops under a post-war defense treaty. Chinese officials have taken the pre-positioning of American military assets in the Philippines as a direct threat and repeatedly urged Manila to withdraw the missile system. The Philippines, however, refused and claimed it has plans to acquire similar systems in the future as part of military modernization. The presence of the launchers has 'aggravated regional tensions,' the white paper read. 'Unresolved territorial and maritime rights disputes have become more difficult and complicated … with the intervention of foreign forces.' China has always frowned upon what it calls the 'foreign interference of extra regional powers,' Julio Amador III, founder of geopolitical risk firm Amador Research, told Defense News. 'China probably released this now to low-key accuse the U.S. of being the source of instability, and offering itself as an alternative partner,' Amador said. The national security white paper was released on the heels of a high-level meeting in Geneva over the weekend, where Chinese and American officials agreed to cut tariffs for 90 days. Negotiations came after the two countries hurled fourfold tariff hikes at each other beginning in early April. China's sentiments on the tariff war are reflected in the white paper, which focuses on how some countries disregarded international obligations and imposed tariffs that disrupted the global economic order. Amid trade uncertainties, China indicated plans to build a free trade zone to be piloted in Hainan, an island province in the South China Sea. The government also unveiled plans to establish offices to review foreign investments that could impact national security after other countries launched tariff, trade, and technology wars and instigated public opinions against China in the name of security, the document said. The paper also reiterated a 'peaceful reunification' with Taiwan and China's support in completing a long-debated Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. Despite highlighting multilateral mechanisms in the white paper, Amador said the document may not significantly change China's positioning or posturing in disputed areas, a bane of contention for Manila which has for decades bemoaned the dissonance between China's foreign policy declarations and the activities of its People's Liberation Army Navy ships, coast guard vessels, and fishing flotillas in the South China Sea. 'The white paper should not be taken at face value,' Amador cautioned. He adds that it should be 'studied with care, noting where PRC [People's Republic of China] actions do not match its words, and prepare for any eventualities.'

Solid Skills: Scouting Report On Colorado Rockies' Adael Amador

During the early games of spring training, Major League Baseball teams often give their top prospects playing time. For this old scout, those early games call attention to exciting young players with skills that just separate them from other prospects. The Colorado Rockies have such a player in second baseman, Adael Amador. The switch-hitting Amador will turn 22 on April 11, 2025. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) Adael Amador was an international free agent from the Dominican Republic. He was signed by the Rockies for $1.5 million in 2019. Amador was a shortstop in the Dominican, with the Rockies recently moving him to second base more permanently . However, if the need arises, Amador is an average defender at second base. Before being signed by Colorado, Amador was known to MLB scouting staffs, as he was a star of the Dominican Republic's U-15 Team. The U-15 Baseball World Cup is a 15-and-under baseball championship. Amador played tournaments across the Dominican and elsewhere for quite a while, earning a reputation as a very low-risk, high-reward potential major leaguer.. Amador is very athletic, with outstanding agility, and excellent baseball instincts. He is a student of the game, with an advanced feel for hitting. (Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image) The Rockies recalled Amador from Triple-A on April 13. He is now a member of their big league club. Amador is 6-0, 200 pounds. To be clear, Amador may never become an All Star. He is, however, a very solid player with the ability to contribute to a major league club. Especially with the Rockies. And especially with the huge outfield at Coors Field. Watching him, Amador doesn't look to be overly strong, but what he may lack in brute strength, he makes up for in his loose, smooth approach. Amador has outstanding bat speed, and is appropriately aggressive from both sides of the plate. Amador has a knack for hitting, with a natural flow and rhythm to his hitting mechanics. Amador makes excellent contact at the plate, with a good knowledge of the strike zone, and an ability to track pitches quickly and accurately out of the hand of the pitcher. Amador has shown he may be a better hitter from the right side of the plate. But make no mistake, he can hit well from either side. Amador knows the strike zone, and isn't shy about taking his share of walks. He will make a pitcher work, going deeply into counts, and having the ability to foul off nasty pitches. Using a rather level swing, Amador doesn't flash much power, as he doen't always get much loft on the ball. In essence, Amador is a line-drive gap hitter, making him an ideal candidate for the spacious outfield of Coors Field in Colorado. Amador won't have to hit home runs at Coors. He may be able to hit either gap consistently, and rack up doubles in bunches. Amador runs well, but he has only average speed. He could steal bases, but it will be mostly due to his good instincts, rather than pure speed. Defensively, Amador is adequate at shortstop, with good movement, but only an average arm. He does, indeed, profile better at second base. Amador's first step quickness gets him to the ball, and he makes all the routine plays of an average defender. He likely won't win a Gold Glove. But he'll get the job done at second base. Amador has completed parts of five minor league seasons. He has a slash line of .273/.384/.436/.820 in 1,579 plate appearances. He has only 47 career home runs. Amador made his debut with the Rockies last June 9. He played in 10 games, and hit .171 in 36 plate appearances. MINNEAPOLIS, MN - JUNE 10: Adael Amador #1 of the Colorado Rockies looks on against the Minnesota ... More Twins on June 10, 2024 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Brace Hemmelgarn/) Amador grades as an average major league baseball player Adael Amador's has an excellent hit tool. He should continue to hit well enough to eventually earn a regular role as the Rockies second baseman. Hitting is Amador's best, and most advanced tool. Amador's major contribution my be hitting the gaps for doubles. Especially at Coors Field in Colorado. Amador has little home run power. He runs well, but isn't fast. He plays defense well enough to make routine plays, but his lack of arm strength limits him to second base. In essence, when all his tools are evaluated, Amador is a solid Grade 50, or an average major league regular.

Judge halts lithium battery storage facility near Canton

CANTON, Texas (KETK) – The district court judge issued a temporary restraining order against the Finland-based company Taaleri Energia currently building a lithium battery storage facility just west of Canton. Van Zandt County Fire Marshal orders battery facility to meet fire codes or face consequences The Amador project was first announced in November 2024 and ever since then community members have been fighting against the development. 'If they meet all the demands, then that's one step closer to knowing we might be safe, but right now, there's a large fear,' community member, Nancy White said. Safety is a concern and reason behind the efforts to prevent the project from moving forward. 'I just don't have the confidence and the security,' White said. 'So, for now, I'm going to say that I'd rather than wait till the technology is ready and it's not.' Multiple community members cited potential threats to both soil and air quality as well as lack of resources for local first responders to handle potential emergencies like a lithium battery fire. The temporary restraining order lasts 14 days and means the company can't move any lithium batteries onto the construction site, or within Van Zandt County. Van Zandt County seeks Trump's support for unwanted foreign-owned lithium battery storage 'In our in our petition, we set out for the court some of our primary concerns,' Van Zandt County District Attorney Tonda Curry said. 'Those regarding the battery testing, the module testing, the container testing, as well as their hazard mitigation plan.' They're also concerned about the emergency operation plan and water access at the site. 'If you are going to come here, your system is going to have to be as safe as it can be,' Curry said. 'And that means it has to meet these National Fire Protection Association standards.' The Finland-based company said in a statement they are working to comply with state regulations for project Amador and said they are actively working with the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal to provide documentation. Curry said if the company doesn't meet the state regulations before the deadline they could proceed with a more permanent injunction. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
