Supply chain disrupted, dry fruit prices spike in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The prices of dry fruits in Hyderabad have witnessed a sharp upward spike, putting both traders and consumers under pressure. The price of Mamra almonds has surged from Rs 2,600 to Rs 3,600 per kg. Pistachios, too, have become dearer, climbing from Rs 900 to Rs 1,200 per kg, according to Vijay Grover of Shivram Peshawari and Brothers. The geopolitical disruptions, stretching from the Indo-Pakistan border to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, are cited as the reason. A recent explosion at Iran's Shahid Rajaee port, its largest maritime hub and primary trade gateway, has only worsened the situation by severely disrupting the movement of goods. Hyderabad's thriving dry fruit and spice trade is heavily dependent on imports from Iran. Large quantities of pistachios, saffron, dates, Mamra almonds, and even fresh fruits like apples and kiwis make their way from Iran to the city's markets every season. Traders fear that if these disruptions continue, prices could rise further or supplies could become irregular. Aman Khan, of Afghan Baghban Dry Fruits Hub, said the impact on the market has been considerable. 'We usually import dry fruits and spices from countries like Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey. But the ongoing tensions in West Asia are a major concern,' he told TNIE. Aman Khan explained that the closure of the Attari-Wagah border crossing has forced importers to rely on air cargo instead of traditional land or sea routes. 'For example, pistachios come to us mainly from Iran. Earlier, we imported around 15 to 20 containers daily through Mumbai. Now that number has dropped to just six to 10 containers,' he said. 'Using air cargo is far more expensive and not sustainable in the long run. Eventually, the increased costs get passed on to consumers,' he added. The timing of these disruptions is especially worrying for traders, as India approaches its festive season, a period when demand for dry fruits typically peaks. There is growing unease in the markets over the uncertainty surrounding the Israel-Iran conflict, which could escalate further.

Four Afghan nationals arrested in Guwahati for illegal stay

Guwahati: In a significant crackdown, Assam Police on Sunday arrested four Afghan nationals from Guwahati's Hatigaon area for allegedly residing in the country without valid documentation. Acting on a tip-off, police raided a rented house near Little Flower School and apprehended the four individuals, identified as Aman Khan, Rizwan Khan, Yusuf Zahid, and Asif Rana. According to a senior police official, the detainees had been living in Assam since 2015 without any legal authorisation. A search of the premises yielded several objectionable and suspicious documents, raising concerns about their activities in the city. Preliminary investigations suggest the group was operating an illegal money-lending business in Guwahati. A case has been registered under Hatigaon Police Station (Case No. 112/25), and authorities are probing their network and activities during their prolonged undocumented stay. The police are working to determine how the individuals entered the country and managed to stay undetected for so long. More details will come as the investigation is ongoing, said the officials. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been insistent on cracking down on illegal infiltration, and he asserted that police have been instructed to remain vigilant across the international boundary. In a separate incident on Sunday, a 27-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in the Dakshin Gaon area of Guwahati. The deceased, identified as Pawan Hazarika from Assam's Lakhimpur district, was the Managing Director of a private coaching institute, Affinity Classes. Initial reports indicate that Hazarika may have taken the extreme step due to prolonged mental harassment. A team from Bhagadattapur Police Station reached the spot and launched an investigation. A youth named Ankit Agarwala has been detained for questioning in connection with the case. A suicide note recovered from the scene reportedly points to a financial dispute involving Rs 60 lakh, suggesting monetary coercion may have played a role. Police are currently probing all possible angles, including harassment and financial pressure, behind the alleged suicide.

Bakrid celebrated across Hyderabad with prayers, feasting and qurbani

Hyderabad: The city celebrated Eid-ul-Adha with early morning prayers, traditional animal sacrifices and large family gatherings on Saturday. Thousands of people attended prayers at Mecca Masjid, Eidgah Mir Alam and other mosques across the city. "We left for the Eidgah at 6 am," said a Yakutpura resident, adding that, "After prayers, we went to the farm to perform the Qurbani." The ritual sacrifice of goats and sheep followed soon after in homes and registered slaughter points. "We bought our goat a week ago and my brothers and I took turns to feed it and clean it. The children became very attached to it," said Shazia Farooq from Toli Chowki. The distribution of meat to friends, family and the needy continued throughout the day. "We divided the meat into packets and sent them to our relatives and building staff, such as housekeepers and security guards. We'll cook some of it for dinner," said 26-year-old Aman Khan from Banjara Hills. Markets in Barkas, Madina and Mallepally were crowded until late on Friday night. "I was doing mehndi for women until 2 am," said Najma Begum, a street-side henna artist in Charminar. "I earned over Rs 30,000 last night, which is a big deal for me." Popular dishes such as mutton biryani, kaleji fry and sheer khurma were cooked in homes across the city. "We started cooking at 10 am and we're still expecting guests," said another resident from Malakpet. "My fridge is full, and so is my heart."
