Go to this new Bay Area restaurant for a devastating cake
Each week, critic MacKenzie Chung Fegan shares some of her favorite recent bites, the dishes and snacks and baked goods that didn't find their way into a full review. Want the list a few days earlier? Sign up for her free newsletter, Bite Curious. The morning after eating at Amara, a Mediterranean restaurant from the owners of Rasa that opened earlier this year, I messaged my colleague and fellow person-with-a-sweet-tooth Elena Kadvany. 'There's a dessert you should know about,' I Slacked. The dessert in question is Amara's praline pistachio opera cake, a nutty, chocolatey, salty layered confection that checks all my boxes. I loved the textural contrasts of the tahini pistachio and chocolate caramel mousses with the crunchy feuilletine and candied nuts. I would drive down to Belmont and make a light, pistachio-heavy dinner of Amara's green hummus (so hued because of ramps and herbs, in addition to pistachios) and that opera cake. The liminal zone around Memorial Day is one of my favorite times of the year to eat. Summer fruits and veg are tiptoeing their way out of the wings while spring produce is on stage, belting out its swan song. Case in point: the halibut crudo recently on the menu at Nopa. Yes there are the season's first cherries, roughly smashed and perked up with finely minced shallots, but there are also peas. It's a colorful composition, very Abstract Expressionist, with the fish, cherries and pea pistou sprinkled with poppy seeds and drizzled with herb oil. Nopa. 560 Divisadero St., San Francisco. Delfina served me another blisteringly good spring-summer mashup in the form of a fried soft shell crab dish, smoky with chile oil. There was also a puddle of what the menu described as 'granturfo' aioli — a term that I am now finding to be unGooglable (perhaps a typo for 'granturco'), but which our lovely server described as the Italian version of huitlacoche. On the side? The first corn I've had this season tangled together with the cultiest of spring cult vegetables, ramps.

Independent financial adviser deems Amara's takeover offer at S$0.895 a share ‘fair and reasonable'
[SINGAPORE] The independent financial adviser (IFA) appointed for the takeover bid for hotel group Amara has deemed the offer at S$0.895 a share to be 'fair and reasonable'. It has therefore advised the company's directors considered to be independent to recommend shareholders to accept the offer, said the company on Tuesday (May 27) via a bourse filing. In Apr 28 this year, Amara received an offer of S$0.895 per share from a consortium led by property company Hwa Hong, which was formerly listed on the Singapore Exchange. This values the hotel group at about S$514.6 million and represents a premium of 27 per cent over Amara's closing price of S$0.705 on Apr 23 before the company called for a trading halt the following day. Other partners of the consortium include a fund sponsored by Hwa Hong and Malaysia-based Newfields, property company Wing Tai, as well as Albertsons Capital, whose shareholders are Albert Teo, Amara's chairman and chief executive, and his daughter Dawn Teo, Amara's chief operating officer. The consortium has set up a special-purpose vehicle called DRC Investments, with the intention to privatise Amara over low trading liquidity and challenging macroeconomic conditions. Sign Up Sign Up W Capital was appointed the IFA for the deal on May 7, and Amara lost its free float on May 15, which meant that the Singapore Exchange will be suspending the trading of its shares at the close of the offer on Jun 10, given that less than 10 per cent of the company's shares are now held by the public. The S$0.895 offer price also represents a 42.1 per cent, 44.8 per cent, 46.7 per cent and 48.9 per cent premium over Amara's volume-weighted average price for the one-month, three-month, six-month and 12-month periods up to and including the last traded day, respectively. In a circular issued by Amara on May 27, the company said that the IFA had looked at several factors when determining the offer to be fair and reasonable. The IFA noted that the offer price fell within its estimated range of values between S$0.888 and S$0.959 per share. Amara's share had also never closed above the offer price of S$0.895 before the deal was announced, and is at about a 27 per cent premium of its closing price of S$0.705 on Apr 23. Shares of Amara went up 1.1 per cent or S$0.01 to close at S$0.90 on Tuesday.

What Miss World 2025 contestants are eating in Hyderabad
As Hyderabad, Telangana, plays host to the Miss World 2025 pageant, we cannot help but wonder: what is on the menu for the 108 contestants? Are they nibbling on salads, or trying our local idli, dosa, and vada? To find out, we visit Trident Hyderabad — the official host hotel for the 25-day event, with the final slated for May 31 — where we caught up with Sous Chef Anubhav Mathur, fresh from wrapping up a fun 'make-your-own-pizza' night with the contestants. The 108 contestants have chaperones who take care of their needs and assist them with their schedules. A total of 157 guests from the Miss World team are staying at the property. 'There's no fixed diet chart,' he says. 'We were asked to keep the food international, considering the wide range of nationalities. To make dining easier and more private, we've dedicated our Tuscany restaurant exclusively to them. The menu includes dishes from all three of our outlets — Amara is the all-day dining multi-cuisine restaurant, Kanak, serves Indian food and Tuscany is the Italian specialty restaurant.' Are Indian flavours still on the table? 'Absolutely. We've toned down the spice levels and tailored Indian dishes to suit their dietary preferences,' said Anubhav. 'They enjoy dishes like palak paneer, dals, grilled meats in malai marinade, and a range of Indian breads. On the international side, we offer a selection of meats, fish, and high-protein salads.' Some crowd-favourite salads include beetroot and feta, grilled chicken, egg salad, and sweet potato salad. Telangana's local ingredients also feature along with millet breads, low-oil vegetable stir fries with courgettes, aubergines, bell peppers and mushrooms. Cleanse juices are also asked for. Even biryani has made its way onto the menu. 'It's very mild, flavourful but without the typical heat of chilli or red chilli powder,' said Anubhav. 'They're open to trying local flavours, though mindful of carb intake.' The contestant from Wales, Millie-Mae Adams, says she was worried about her nut allergy. 'But the hotel has taken care of my food very well. They don't forget about my allergy concerns,' she said. The kitchen also accommodates vegan requirements with dishes made in light, oil-free gravies featuring millets, raw jackfruit, and sweet potatoes. 'The vegan contestants are especially curious about the ingredients and recipes,' he added. Desserts have been the most fun, and the most challenging. 'We make all our ice creams in-house, so they get to try unique flavours like rose and pistachio. We also did flourless cake one night. In our desserts, sugar is replaced with dates, and we also offer mixed nut ladoos and healthy snack bites.' From millet rotis to date-sweetened treats, the menu is a celebration of thoughtful, flavourful, and globally-minded cuisine. Hana Johns, Miss World contestant from Northern Ireland, loved the biryani 'I had the biryani for three days and I cannot get enough of it.' Miss World Contestant from Kenya, Grace Ramtu says, 'The chicken curry is my absolute favourite. My eyes light-up when I see chicken curry for any meal.' The finals of the 72nd edition of the Miss World pageant is to be held at the HITEX Exhibition Centre in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, May 31, 2025

Boden's 'extremely comfortable' and 'gorgeous' dress now 25% off
A dress from Boden, described as "extremely comfortable" and "gorgeous" by some shoppers, is now 25% off in the retailer's sale. The Amara Embroidered Jersey Dress was £120 but is now £90 with the code '7N7G', offering a £30 save for customers. The dress comes in a petite or regular fit, available in UK sizes 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22. The dress is made out of 100% cotton and is machine washable. According to Boden, it has a flattering fit and flare shape, with the length finishing at mid calf and the sleeves reaching elbow length. The clothing also comes with a detachable self-fabric belt. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here. The dress has received a 3.5 rating out of five stars so far, based on 14 reviews. With Boden being a slightly higher than average price for its fashion pieces, it's always worth trawling their sales. But if you still want to get something less than £50 you could purchase Next's Love & Roses Navy Flutter Sleeve Tired 100% Cotton Midi Dress for £44. Or with an even cheaper price tag, you could buy Bright Blue Floral Embroidered Sleeve Tiered Midi Dress from New Look for £35.99. One reviewer noted that they had to size up, but were overall happy with their purchase. They said: "I am used to Boden sizing now so although a 14 in high street shops I went for a 12 and it fits perfectly. "It's super comfortable and so gorgeous - wore it for the first time yesterday and got lots of compliments from strangers!" Another customer also said they had received compliments in the dress and said: "This dress is absolute perfection. The fabric and embroidery quality is excellent. It is heavy and well made, but still very comfortable. "I love the pockets, and the length is just right, hitting just above the ankle (I am 5'4" for reference). I got several compliments the first time I wore it!" While another reviewer had this to say: "This dress is delightful and I feel delightful wearing it! The fabric is comfortable and forgiving. Truly my new favorite closet item." But the dress wasn't popular for everyone. One shopper said: "I was so excited to try this on, was already planning to get both the teal and the pink. The colour (teal) was amazing, however that's the only positive. "The material is much too heavy for summer, it seems more suited for autumn. The cut and flares from waist down makes it a little frumpy also. "I just don't understand how anyone could wear this on a sunny summer day without being hot. I bought from a retailer".
