'New lease on life': IVRI makes history with successful indigenous hip transplant for dogs in India; reduces cost to Rs 30K

BAREILLY: The scientists at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) achieved a milestone by successfully performing the first hip transplant surgery using indigenous technology in the country. This hip transplant is notable for being entirely developed with local technology. Until now, artificial hips for dogs were not available in India and had to be imported, costing at least Rs 5 lakhs. For nearly three years, IVRI scientists, Dr Rohit Kumar and his team, conducted a comprehensive study to develop not only a cemented hip suitable for Indian dogs but also the necessary instruments. Dr Kumar and his team took on this challenge, initially seeking insights from renowned human orthopaedic surgeon Dr Alok Singh. With technical assistance from Dr Singh and Bareilly Medicare Firm's Yogesh Saxena and Devesh Saxena, Life Ortho Care in Gujarat helped in developing the artificial hip and its instruments for dogs. Dr Rohit Kumar mentioned that the developed hip is quite affordable, allowing dog owners in the country to receive excellent treatment at a lower cost in the future. He told TOI, 'Earlier the cost of replacement surgery was very high as there was no implant manufacturer in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Home Efficient with This Plug-In elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo We all did a comprehensive indigenous study. Saw many surgeries in humans, developed all the dimensions on our own by taking multiple x-rays of the dogs. The cost of implant during the experimentation phase is between 25k-30k and even after commercialisation, the cost of hip replacement surgery would be very affordable. The best thing about it is that everything is developed and manufactured in India.' The technical design and dimensions were assigned to Dr T Sai Kumar for MVSc research and Dr Kamlesh Kumar for PhD research. This work was carried out under the AINP-DIMSCA (All India Network Programme on Diagnostic Imaging for Surgical Conditions in Animals) project by the team of Dr Rohit Kumar, Dr Amarpal, Dr A C Saxena, and Dr AM Pawde. Dr Amarpal said, 'This is the first time such a study was systematically conducted in the country, with the first surgery performed in Dehradun, the second in Bareilly, and the third on a police dog in Sambhal, giving them a new lease on life." On this achievement, IVRI's Director Dr Triveni Dutt lauded the collective efforts of the entire team and encouraged making this technology available to dog owners nationwide and transferring it to the industry as soon as possible.

Ludhiana: 2022 Janakpuri gangwar; 3 arrested following tip-off

The Division number 2 police, acting on a tip off, have arrested three accused who had been absconding since a gang war took place in Janakpuri area in October 2022. According to police officials, a violent clash had taken place on October 8, 2022, between two rival groups led by Mandeep Singh alias Tiger and Vansh in the Janakpuri area, under the jurisdiction of Division number 2 police station. Following a complaint filed by sub-inspector (SI) Balor Singh, incharge of Janakpuri Police Post, an FIR was registered in October 2022, against both groups under Sections 307, 160, 324, 323, 506, 148, and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). During the investigation, police arrested 18 accused, who were later charge-sheeted in court. Meanwhile, five accused, identified as Rhythm, Deepak Bhatti, Amarpal, Davinder alias Gappu, and Ghudda alias Dhanda alias Shivam remained on the run. Station house officer (SHO), Gurjeet Singh, Division number 2 stated, ' To apprehend them, a special team was formed where acting on a tip off, the team arrested Deepak Bhatti on May 22, 2025, from Kila Mohalla, Ludhiana.' SHO Singh said that on the same day, accused Shivam was nabbed from New Krishna Nagar, Hambran Road. 'On May 24, when the police team reached the residence of Amarpal in Gali number 1, Heera Nagar (under the jurisdiction of Moti Nagar Police Station), he attempted to escape by jumping from the roof. He sustained injuries to both legs and was admitted to the civil hospital, Ludhiana, for treatment. He was later arrested in connection with the same case,' SHO Singh added. On Sunday, accused Amarpal Singh was produced before the duty magistrate, who remanded him to two-day police custody. All three arrested accused are currently in police custody. YEIDA to launch portal for over 4,500 homebuyers of Jaiprakash Associates

NOIDA : Over 4,500 buyers who had made partial or full payment for flats in the 12 stalled projects launched by embattled real estate firm Jaiprakash Associates Ltd will now have a voice, and an ear, in an Allahabad High Court-mandated committee that will supervise their completion. Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority ( YEIDA ), which will now take over all the incomplete housing projects launched and partially started by the developer, earlier this week appointed a homebuyers' representative in the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) proceedings against JAL, Amarpal, to the HC-monitored panel with decision-making powers. A subcommittee of various homebuyers' associations has been set up to represent collective interests and coordinate with YEIDA, too. But Amarpal will be the lone homebuyers' representative with an official seat in the decision-making committee alongside UP govt, real estate regulator and the development authority, officials said. YEIDA will also launch a portal where buyers can register their details—the project where they have bought a flat, the amount they have already paid for it and if they plan on keeping the house or withdrawing. The portal will also share updates on each project to keep buyers informed and involved in the revival process. OSD Shailendra Bhatia was appointed as the nodal officer and the single-point contact for all homebuyers' grievances. CEO Arun Vir Singh said consultancy firm, Currie & Brown, is to conduct surveys at Jaypee Greens Bougainvilleas, Jaypee Greens Country Homes I & II, Jaypee Greens Greencrest Homes, Jaypee Greens Krowns, Jaypee Greens Kove, Jaypee Greens Buddh Circuit Studios, Jaypee Greens Kassia I, II, III, Jaypee Greens Sportsville and Jaypee Greens Villa Expanza to assess the status of construction at each project and determine the work that remains to be completed. The consultancy firm will also prepare, in the next 15 days, a detailed request for proposal (RFP) document that will be vetted by the high court-mandated panel and then used to hire a new developer to complete the construction. Most of the 4,600 buyers affected by the stalled projects had booked their homes in 2011-12 and were promised possession by 2014. Many of them have already paid 95% of the cost of their flats, only to be left waiting for years. In its ruling on March 10, a bench of justices Manoj Kumar Gupta and Kshitij Shailendra of the Allahabad high court upheld YEIDA's decision to cancel the allotment of 1,000 hectares of special development zone land to JAL over non-payment of dues and directed YEIDA to take over all incomplete housing projects on this land parcel and ensure their completion under the terms that JAL and homebuyers agreed on. In a significant relief, the HC said the period from Feb 2020, when JAL's allotment was cancelled, to March 10, 2024, when the court's judgment was delivered, is to be treated as a 'zero period' when homebuyers will not have to pay penalties or interest to the developer for their dues. The HC also set strict timelines, asking YEIDA to ensure housing projects that are at least 75% complete are finished within a year, those at 50% are completed in 18 months, and those only 25% done are wrapped up in 30 months. The outer limit, to complete all other project-related development work, is 36 months. It placed on YEIDA the responsibility to ensure funds are available to complete the projects, regardless of the amount collected from homebuyers and clarified that homebuyers' claims under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) will remain protected, and their rights in the ongoing NCLT proceedings against JAL will not be affected.

Yeida injects funds to finish 12 JAL projects

The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) will put in funds to finish the 12 housing projects which the Jaypee Group has failed to deliver to the homebuyers, officials announced on Friday. Yeida will also develop a dedicated portal as a database for homebuyers to help them interact with officials and seek refund or update on their project. At a meeting with homebuyers on Friday, Yeida CEO Arun Vir Singh discussed issues related to finalising a new developer and the process to address the grievances. 'Following the Allahabad High Court orders, Yeida has decided to infuse funds from its own pockets so that the work can start and homebuyers can get apartments without further delay. Our objective will be that the homebuyers get hassle-free justice and choose to either exit by taking refund or take possession of their flat. We have decided to form a portal so that the buyers get updates without visiting our office,' the Yeida CEO said. For the purpose, Yeida has hired a consulting firm Currie & Brown to conduct a comprehensive ground survey and assess the current condition of these housing schemes. The firm is expected to submit its report within 15 days. 'Following this, a request for proposal (RFP) will be drafted to select a new developer under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model to complete the construction,' Singh said. Hope floats for thousands of homebuyers as their houses are stuck in the stalled residential projects of Jaypee Associates Limited along the Yamuna Expressway. 'We booked a flat in this project in 2011 with the hope of getting possession in 2014. But we have been struggling since then to get justice. In 2020 Yeida cancelled the lease of the project land. Jaypee took the matter to the Allahabad high court, which has ordered Yeida to build the project. Now we hope to get possession as Yeida has promised and is ready to infuse funds. There are 8,000 homebuyers who are in distress due to the fault of Jaypee Associates Limited,' said Shamendra Singh, general secretary of Jaypee Sports City welfare society, who met the CEO on Friday. Through the platform, officials said, affected homebuyers will be able to submit details such as project registration, payment history with the previous developer, and their preference to either continue with the project or opt out. The authority has named Amarpal, who has been representing the buyers in the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) proceedings, as the authorised representative of the homebuyers on the high court-mandated committee. 'A sub-committee of various homebuyers' associations has been formed to protect buyer interests and coordinate with the authority, Amarpal will be the sole representative on the formal committee. OSD Shailendra Bhatia has been appointed as the nodal officer to address homebuyers' complaints and ensure smooth execution of the revival process,' Singh announced. According to the Allahabad high court order, Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL) has lost the project as the order upheld Yeida's decision to cancel the lease. Now Yeida has the lease in its name, and the mandate to build the project as JAL has lost control over it. To recall, the case goes back to 2008, when Yeida allotted about 1,000 hectares of land under the Special Development Zone (SDZ) to Jaypee International Sports, a subsidiary of JP Associates, to build a sports city. The project included the Buddh International Circuit, which hosted a MotoGP race in 2023, and several residential developments that were never completed. 'Due to non-payment of dues, Yeida cancelled the land allotment in February 2020. Earlier this year, the Allahabad High Court upheld this cancellation and directed the authority to take over and complete the housing projects,' Singh explained at the meeting. The high-level oversight committee includes the principal secretary of Industrial Development, chairman of UP-Rera or a nominated representative, Yeida CEO Arun Vir Singh, a representative from the housing department, and the authorised homebuyer representative. The authority also plans to go ahead with developing international-standard sports infrastructure as originally planned.
