Just 20 Things That'll Give Your Couch A Makeover Because You Need To Use It A Few More Years

We hope you love our recommendations! Some may have been sent as samples, but all were independently selected by our editors. Just FYI, BuzzFeed and its publishing partners may collect a share of sales and/or other compensation from the links on this page. You clock a lot of time on your couch but swapping it out is $$$. 1. An organizing couch pillow can corral your Stanley cup, remote, and three other items you can nestle into its holes so you can get extra comfy on the couch without having to move your living room furniture or buy a new couch to accommodate your beverages. Amazon Cup Cozy Pillow is a small biz as seen on TV specializing in cleverly designed cup holders. Promising review: "I liked that it worked with cups and mugs, perfect for clumsy friends." — YAZ "This thing is great! I'm home on maternity leave with my new baby and spend most of my time on the couch under a sleeping baby. This product makes it easy for me to keep my drinks, remote, etc close by even with crazy dogs running around. It's a little more expensive than I would have liked but it works and I love it so money well spent!" — Amber Get it from Amazon for $34.99 (available in more colors and in a three-hole version). If you prefer a wood look, check out a similar bamboo couch cup holder. 2. Or a couch cup holder if you'd prefer to not give up any seating room but still need somewhere to put your Stanely cup. If your living room setup means that your coffee or side table won't fit as close to your couch as you'd like, here's an easy answer that won't require moving *or* replacing furniture. Promising review: "I love the 'Greige' color! It has a silicone feel and wraps perfectly on the arm of my sofa. It even fits my Stanley, which is great! Perfect way to store our remotes as well." — Robyn Magalhaes Get it from Amazon for $38.99 (available in six colors). 3. A bag of polyester stuffing to bring new life back to your furniture and throw pillows that seem to be on their last leg — yep even a leather sectional couch you're considering replacing. Psst, I did this a few months ago with my circa-2017 West Elm velvet couch that I've been mulling over replacing and it looks sooooo much better now. (And thus, inspiring me writing this story.) Am I kicking myself for not taking before-and-after pics? Absolutely. Promising review:"Ok, so I had been looking into buying a new couch, but I only wanted a nice leather one, and they are SOOO EXPENSIVE. I decided to try and fix ours, and I am SOO HAPPY with the results!! I cut open each of the three sections of the inner cushions of each back cushion, restuffed them, and sewed them back up. It took me about a day and a half. I want to get some furniture foam to plump up the seat cushions (but that is another project and significantly more money), but the end result is a HUGE improvement! The couch looks (and feels) a million times better! Wish I done this years ago! the first 'before' pic has a back cushion already stuffed because I didn't think to take a pic 'til after I already stuffed a cushion. If you are thinking this won't work (like I was), you are wrong. DO IT!!!!" — Geoff Get it from Amazon for $13.49+ (available in several sizes. 4. Some cushion supports in case lots of work-from-home days — which you're very grateful for, btw — has aged your couch at a rapid rate. These'll help plump up your cushions and make the couch look and feel like new(er). It's basically really thick foam you can put inside your cushion, under the stuffing. Plus, there's a piece of thin foam that goes near the back of he cushion for extra support. SagsAway is a small biz specializing in these inserts that help revive furniture. Promising review:"The sofas are sturdy and only three years old but several cushions were sagging. I ordered two of the large size for our live seat to try them out. I easily cut an inch off to have it fit with an Exacto knife. Easy to slide in, easy to close with my husbands help. The difference when sitting on the sofa is amazing. Firm and they feel like new cushions. I just ordered three more for the large sofa." — doris Get them on Amazon for $34.99+ per kit (available in two sizes; each kit fixes one cushion). 5. Or a couch-spanning cushion support for when things get a little saggy and it isn't just the cushions' fault. Note that based on the reviews, this tends to work best on poly-filled cushions. As one reviewer noted, it helped some but not as much as expected on their down-filled cushions. Promising review: "We have an older sofa (10 years) that we love, but the middle was sagging. The cushion support board helped tremendously. We are also going to put an extra foam insert in the middle cushion that is also sagging. Altogether, it is much cheaper than getting a new couch, and it is noticeably more comfortable. Very easy to install." — David Rizor Get it from Amazon for $44.99 (available in three sizes). 6. But if the situation is a bit more dire, a full-fledged sofa spring kit will help your handy self figure out a budget-friendly furniture solution. Amazon House 2 Home is a small biz specializing in upholstery repair kits. The kit includes: All commercial grade items, including four no-sag couch springs, 12 upholstery spring clips, 20 feet of seat spring stay wire, 20 stay wire clips, 32 screws, and step-by-step instructions for installation. Promising review: "Replaced the broken spring and added new coated wire and clips. I used zip ties to hold the wire and springs together while I clamped down the clips, which helped a lot. I just had trouble holding the spring and wire together while I clamped the clip down. Great kit, came with plenty of extra supplies." — Marie Get it from Amazon for $22.95. 7. A snazzy couch cushion to keep your seat cushions safe from your pets, kids, and adults you also reside with — OK, from you too. It can also seriously scratch the itch for a new couch. Promising review: "It is so soft, fits so perfectly on my couch, doesn't move when I sit on it or when the dog jumps up, and looks nice too! I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and I hope it helps my couch to last a long time. After one month, zero regrets! It has been worth every penny. The couch cover is a fraction of the cost of my couch, so I think it's been very worth it to help keep the fabric on my couch intact. I washed it on delicate and tumble-dried it on low by itself. Held up great. Again, I love it! Worth the wait and the cost. I added two more photos to show how it held up after washing and drying it." — sgur Get it from Amazon for $59.90+ (available in 13 dimensions and15 color combos). 8. A portable fabric shaver reviewers have used on sweater, coats, and other garments BUT can really go to town on pilled parts and loose threads on your furniture to make it look way less worn. I used this gadget to de-fuzz a coat that I FORGOT isn't mean to be fuzzy. You can read my full fabric shaver review here. Get it from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in five colors). 9. And now that you've de-fuzzed your couch, a pack of sofa shields that'll deter your rascal of a cat from picking at the couch again. Amazon The shields can adhere to a variety of surfaces so whether your sofa is polyester, cotton, or acetate-based fabric, you're good. Just note it's not meant for use on leather. Promising review: "I have two cats and these shields work amazingly. They have an adhesive backing, which is really easy to take off. Also, they're easy to cut to the size needed if you have an awkward arm or something on your chair. They absolutely repel my cats from even trying to scratch as they're made from a hard plastic. I love that it's not the double-sided sticky kind so there's no hair or anything sticking to it." — Mya Ramirez Get them from Amazon for $18.99+ (available in packs of 6 and 10). 10. A specific ink remover for removing all sorts of pen accidents and transform that couch you found for a song off Facebook Marketplace that was obviously in a house with kids. Promising review:"This was left on my sofa when some ink was smeared. I let it sit overnight and washed it in the washing machine on a warm cycle. I am very shocked at the results. My couch is like brand new.." — Ayauna Get it from Amazon for $15. 11. Some wood polish and conditioner can help turn back time on some water stains because despite your constant reminders, you family can't seem to actually use the coasters and the coffee table for their water glasses. Enhances the natural beauty and depth of grain on finished *and* unfinished wood. For use on antiques, dining tables, kitchen cabinets, wood doors and trim, etc. Promising review:"Used this to attempt to clean up the 45-year-old solid wood couch that I inherited and reupholstered. Got the water stains off after one application! Perfect!" — Stacey A. Berkin Get it from Amazon for $8.47. 12. A red wine stain remover you should keep on hand because, well, accidents happen! But you can be prepared for (at least some of) them! Promising review:"Spilled an entire glass of red wine on my couch last night. Of course I was about to load the entire couch off to the dump, but I remembered I had bought this product probably a year ago and hadn't tried it. The stain literally disappeared before my eyes…and after throwing the cover in the washer and dryer, the stain is 100% gone. I thought for sure there would be a purple cast of color on the cushion. NO. You would never know I spilled an entire glass of wine on this cushion. I wonder if it works best when used immediately? Curious if it would work on old stains. REGARDLESS: it is a miracle product." — Kelly Potter Get it from Amazon for $5.99+ (available in several sizes and in individual wipes). 13. A velvet slipcover will give your ragged old couch a completely new look. Plus, the slipcover comes with straps to keep it in place so you don't have to fuss with it all the time. Promising review:"I rent a furnished apartment with a grandma couch. I was covering it with a cute comforter for over a year, when I saw someone suggest this on Facebook. I love it. I got teal, and I've always wanted a velvet couch. I did not have extra money in my budget, but I definitely think it was worth it! Really easy to put on and not shapeless like the first couch covers. My friends came over, and they loved it." — Jenn Get it from Amazon for $32.49+ (available in five sizes and 15 colors). 14. Or some waterproof cushion covers to help cover up some unsightly stains from an otherwise-good couch that's still serving you well! Lots of reviewers use them on outdoor furniture, too! Promising review: "Have a look at these cushion covers! They are great quality and look amazing. Best invention ever! I bought the taupe, but wish I'd chosen the beige instead. Not a deal breaker, so kept them. But these are waterproof and washable! I have dogs, so this sure helps to protect my new sofa!!" — Laurica Get them from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in six sizes/packs and 11 colors). 15. Or a boho-look water-resistant slipcover that looks like you nabbed it from the cool new boutique that just opened in town. But for considerably less. Wayfair Promising review: "Beautiful. Very rich and thick material." — Iva Get it from Wayfair for $83.99 (available in several sizes and patterns). 16. A leather stain remover spray can turn back time on your leather couch, purse, boots, basically whatever that, despite leather usually withstanding most stains, is really showing its wear. This stuff is transformative! This also works on Durablend, vinyl, compound, saffiano, faux leather, and other leather or leather-like surfaces. Promising review:"Used the microfiber cloth to apply and after the first treatment noted only mild improvement, but after the second treatment (done just after the first treatment dried), the stain was not visible!! I then did the entire chair and the results are great. Advice: Do not scrub the area hard. This may roughen up the leather. Apply lightly and wipe off with another microfiber towel." — mich Get it from Amazon for $15.98. 17. Grandma's Secret, an under-the-radar solution with serious stain-removing prowess — like, cleaning pen from a white leather couch. Chilling! It can remove oil, grease, ink, grass, and blood stains for all my vampires out there. Psst, a few months ago I recommended this to a friend who fell in a puddle of motor oil on a sidewalk, then accidentally wiped it on her camel coat. It got the stains out! Promising review:"This stuff is so amazing. I'm a witness. My 2-year-old baby wrote all over my white leather couch. I tried many different things and nothing work but Grandma's Secret Spot Remover. I love this stuff." — L. Nix Get it from Amazon for $9.75. 18. THE Bissell Little Green that'll annihilate all kinds of unsightly stains. My friends with a 1-year-old and a corgi SWEAR by theirs for cleaning their beige couch where the aforementioned messy lil' duo spend most of their time. Sometimes your couch just needs a good cleaning to look, feel, and smell presentable again. Promising review:" This is by far the best investment I've ever made. After buying a white couch, my dog jumped on it covered in dirt. My first thought was to hire a cleaning company, but the quote was nearly $700. Instead, I bought this machine for a fraction of the cost, and let me tell you — it was worth every penny. The results were so incredible, I would've gladly paid ten times the price. I ended up cleaning all my couches, and I can confidently say this is the best purchase I've ever made." — AT Get it from Amazon for $123.59. 19. Some replacement sofa legs for that old Ikea couch that needs a serious refresh. Design is all in the details and switching out furniture legs can (literally and figuratively) elevate a couch. PrettyPegs Prettypegs is a small, Stockholm-based biz from married couple Jana and Mikael. The idea came to them after shopping at Ikea and finding all the sofa legs super boring. Get it from PrettyPegs for $16.40 each (available in a variety of furniture legs for all kinds of pieces). 20. And if your main sofa complaint is that your pet's fur gets allllll over it, a reusable roller dog hair remover with a sturdy brush system can pick up said layer off fur off your sofa. See the ChomChom roller in action on TikTok! And check out this ~glowing~ review from my colleague Jenae Sitzes: "The tens of thousands of 5-star Amazon reviews are reason enough to add the ChomChom to your cart immediately — but let me add my own personal review to the stack. I've been using the ChomChom for quite a while now, but I took the photos above literally just now to show just how quick, easy, and effective this roller is. It took 10 seconds to rid my velvet couch ottoman (yes, velvet...a terrible cat owner choice, I know) of the hair my two gray kitties are constantly leaving everywhere. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of using this roller — at first, I thought you only brushed down in one direction, and was confused why it wasn't picking up hair. It's important to do a push-and-pull brushing in *both* directions so it actually pulls the hair inside, which does require you to apply a bit of pressure. Afterward, you'll just dump out the hair that's been trapped inside. The ChomChom is best for large flat surfaces like couches and beds."
