Applications open for American Water Charitable Foundation's Water and Environment grants
Missouri American Water has announced the launch of the American Water Charitable Foundation 2025 Water and Environment Grant Program.
Non-profit organizations that promote clean water, conservation and environmental education are invited to apply by March 7.
Among the five recipients of these grants in Missouri last year, two were from Joplin.
• Joplin High School received $5,000 to purchase equipment for student-led research projects focusing on water quality.
• The Wildcat Glades Nature Group received $9,500 to restore native landscape to improve water quality and promote immersion in nature.
Christie Barnhart, senior manager of communications for Missouri American Water, said these grants are through the American Water Charitable Foundation, which was started by American Water and has been giving back to communities since 2012.
'These grants are really focused on anything that is environmental in nature,' Barnhart said. 'That could be education, or it could be a project. Some of the past grant recipients for this have been organizations that did projects that were focused on things like watershed protection. It could also be an activity geared toward environmental education in a classroom. It's really about bringing attention and awareness to sustaining our environment.'
Any nonprofit organization within any of the company's service areas in the state is eligible, she said.
'As the water provider, we want to see the environment taken care of, so it's a good opportunity for us to give back to organizations that are essentially helping us continue to deliver clean, safe, reliable drinking water,' Barnhart said.
Since 2012, the American Water Charitable Foundation has invested over $20 million in funding through grants and matching gifts that benefit communities where American Water and its employees live and work.
Barnhart said the grant process isn't cumbersome and interested organizations can visit the application portal at
