Prime Video Now Reaches 130 Million U.S. Ad-Supported Customers, Amazon Says
Amazon says that Prime Video continues to reach new users in the U.S., as it prepares to roll out new ad tech in connection to its 2025 upfront presentation later today. The tech giant said Monday that the ad tier of Prime Video now reaches more than 130 million U.S. customers, that is up from 115 million, a number which it revealed last year. The 130 million figure is not the same as a subscriber number (Amazon last revealed Prime subscriber numbers in 2021, when it tallied up over 200 million worldwide), but it gives a sense of reach and scale for its streaming platform. More from The Hollywood Reporter How an "Opportunistic" Fox Reclaimed 'American Dad!' After 10 Seasons on TBS Why Fox Revived 'Fear Factor' and 'The Weakest Link' Fox Bets Big on Unscripted to Start 2025-26 Season The company also says that 88 percent of Prime Video viewers have also shopped on Amazon, a stat meant to underscore the direct relationship between watching and buying on the platform. Prime Video entered the advertising business in a major way last year, flipping on ads for all of its U.S. users (subscribers could also opt out of ads for a small monthly fee), giving it instant scale. The move worked, with ads revenue surging, but it also shook up the entire ad market, flooding it with inventory and sparking grumbles from other streaming players that suddenly had a lot more competition than anticipated. The company has since been rolling out its ad tier to other markets. At its initial upfront, the company wowed buyers with a star-studded event, meant to underscore that it meant business. Ahead of the 2025 installment, the company says that it will roll out new artificial intelligence-powered ad tech that its customers will be able to use meant to drive sales of products, both on Amazon and outside of the shopping giant's walls. Those products will include AI-generated contextual ad messaging which 'auto-generates hyper-relevant ad copy to make ads feel like natural extensions of what viewers are watching'; shoppable ads that incorporate pricing, reviews and Prime shipping info from Amazon, letting users buy the product without ever leaving the content stream; and an expanded suite of interactive formats meant to drive sales off of Amazon, including calls to action like 'subscribe now' or 'book an appointment,' with info sent to users phones. 'Our ad formats are proven to drive measurable action on and off Amazon,' said Alan Moss, VP of global ads sales for Amazon Ads. 'Starting this year, we are introducing a contextual advertising experience that dynamically aligns the ad message with the content viewers are watching – creating a natural and relevant connection. Based on Amazon's signals and fully addressable and authenticated audiences, we are uniquely positioned to offer viewers scene-aware ads as extensions of the entertainment experience, not interruptions.' American Dad! Heading Back to Fox as Part of 4-Season Pick-Up; Simpsons, Bob's and Family Guy Also Renewed
It's official: The Smith family is returning to Fox. American Dad! — which has spent the past decade airing new episodes on TBS — will return to its original home as part of Fox's Animation Domination lineup. But that's not the biggest news: Fox has renewed The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy and Dad! for a whopping four seasons each. More from TVLine Family Guy Sends Peter to Fire Island With Cole Escola in Season 23, Among Other Shenanigans (Exclusive) 'It Insists Upon Itself': Family Guy Creator Seth MacFarlane Explains One of the Show's Most Iconic Quotes, Nearly 20 Years Later Dexter: Original Sin Renewed for Season 2 Each of those seasons will consist of 15 episodes — meaning, all four shows have been picked up for an additional 60 episodes. 'This new deal celebrates the eternal popularity of these iconic comedies, as well as the enduring, prolific relationship we continue to enjoy with our friends at 20th Television Animation and the brilliant creators – that goes double for Seth this time around — and incredible voices behind these contemporary classics,' Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, said in a statement Wednesday. American Dad! made its debut on Fox in February 2005, where it aired for nearly a decade before making the jump to basic cable in October 2014. It was the last scripted original to air on TBS; its most recent two-season renewal was handed out by the previous regime ahead of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger in 2022, and its Season 19 finale aired March 24. The unprecedented renewal deal will take The Simpsons through Season 40, Bob's Burgers through Season 19, Family Guy through Season 27 and American Dad! through Season 23. Amid a Back-to-the-Future Moment for Animation, Could ‘The Critic' Make a Comeback?
In an era where adult animation enjoys remarkable popularity and longevity, could another classic (albeit short-lived) 1990s animated sitcom make a comeback? Jon Lovitz thinks so. More from The Hollywood Reporter Janelle James Reacts to Ava Being Fired on 'Abbott Elementary' and Last Year's Emmy Snub Grant Ellis Picks Winner in Indecisive 'Bachelor' Finale - and 'Golden' Stars Head to 'Paradise' 'American Dad!' Closing in on Deal to Return to Fox On Friday, the comedian said that he and creator Al Jean are developing a revival of The Critic, the series in which Lovitz played the film critic and Coming Attractions TV host Jay Sherman. 'You keep telling me you want it back. I've been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!!' Lovitz posted. Despite hailing from a slew of veterans from The Simpsons (including Jean, Mike Reiss, and James L. Brooks, who produced the show via his Gracie Films), the show never achieved Simpsons-level success, only airing 13 episodes over two seasons on ABC and later Fox. It frequently parodied the entertainment business, with Sherman reviewing fake films (his catchphrase was 'It stinks!'), and his boss, Duke Phillips, not-so-subtly inspired by Ted Turner. Its opening credits, which featured a montage of New York City landmarks, from the Central Park Zoo and Rockefeller Center skating rink to the Guggenheim Museum and World Trade Center, were among the best of its era. But in 2025, adult animation is in a back-to-the-future moment, as long-canceled shows make comebacks, and as staples like The Simpsons (which debuted in 1989), South Park (which debuted in 1997) and Family Guy (which debuted in 1999) remain stalwarts of their respective lineups. King of the Hill, the Fox animated series that ran from 1997 until 2010, is set to return with new episodes on Hulu this year. And American Dad!, the Seth MacFarlane series (which has been on for 20 years!) and that had been running on TBS, is set to return to Fox after years in relative cable obscurity. Shows like Futurama and Beavis and Butt-Head have all been revived, as have slightly younger-skewing animated shows like Clone High and X-Men: The Animated Series (now called X-Men '97). But it may be the return of King of the Hill that should give fans of The Critic optimism. While adult animation has always leaned on the absurd, both The Critic and King of the Hill felt grounded in a way that its peers were not. Sure, The Critic had its fair sure of absurdity (one character was from Easter Island and bore a striking resemblance to a moai statue), but the New York in which it was set felt real in a way that Springfield or Quahog never did. And a time when streaming services are hungry for fresh yet familiar fare (The Critic streams on Tubi, by the way), and with the entertainment business writ large ripe for parody in a cultural era dominated by TikTok and YouTube, the timing might be perfect to bring back Jay Sherman and his crew of misfits. And What Would It Mean for the Future of 'Animation Domination'? 'It Insists Upon Itself': Family Guy Creator Seth MacFarlane Explains One of the Show's Most Iconic Quotes, Nearly 20 Years Later FBI: International Stars Issue Heartfelt Goodbyes After Cancellation, Cite 'Challenging and Beautiful' Series Run There is no word yet on where American Dad! will land next, but this wouldn't be the first time the Smith family has been displaced: The animated comedy made its debut on Fox in February 2005, where it aired for nearly a decade before making the jump to basic cable in October 2014. American Dad! actually is ultimately the last scripted original to air on TBS; its most recent two-season renewal was handed out by the previous regime ahead of the WBD merger in 2022. Of note: Another 20th Television-produced cartoon, Futurama, also made the jump from Fox to basic cable (Comedy Central) before it eventually landed at Hulu. TVLine will keep you posted as we learn more about American Dad!'s future. For the uninitiated: American Dad! 'centers on super patriotic CIA agent Stan Smith and the misadventures of his unconventional family in Langley Falls, Va.,' per the official logline. The voice cast includes series co-creator Seth MacFarlane (as Stan and Roger), Wendy Schaal (as Francine), Rachael MacFarlane (as Hayley), Jeff Fischer (as Jeff), Scott Grimes (as Steve) and Dee Bradley Baker (as Klaus). A total of 388 American Dad! episodes will have aired across two networks when its TBS run comes to an end.
