How Keke Palmer spends her 5 to 9 — from morning Pilates to drinking whiskey

Keke Palmer is the internet's darling. She's an Emmy-winning actor, headline-making podcaster, and TV host. Fun, charismatic, and genuine, Palmer can create a catch-phrase in a split-second moment of genius. Remember, "Sorry to this man"? So, ahead of our call, I was intrigued to find out what Palmer was like one-on-one, without cameras flashing or being on a big movie set. What I discovered is that she is everything you'd want a celebrity to be: simultaneously relatable (she's also obsessed with Pilates) and somehow otherworldly (she's motivated to work until 2 a.m.). In the latest installment of Business Insider's "5-9" series, Palmer, 31, shares a glimpse into her busy life as a businesswoman and mother, as part of her collaboration with American Express' Business Platinum Card. What time do you get up, and what's your morning routine? I put my clothes out the night before and get up between 6 a.m. and 6.45 a.m. If my workday starts after 8 a.m., I'll use that hour from 7 a.m. to work out: Pilates is my favorite. When I get back, I'll have a coffee. I'm drinking my water, and I've got my Stanley. Then I'll start work. Do you do reformer or mat Pilates? I love them both for different reasons. If I do mat Pilates, it's going to be heated, and if I do reformer Pilates, it's not. If my hair is done, I'm doing reformer, for sure. I don't want to get sweaty on the mat. The Pilates that I do is not as yoga-leaning, it's athletic — not cardio, but very intricate and muscle-building. It's the moment of my day that I get to myself, even if I'm in a class with other people. It's just me, feeling it, existing in the world, and doing something for myself. It's really meditative. When you're focusing so hard on what you're doing, you can't think about anything else. Exactly, girl. What do you have for breakfast? I try to eat something that will really nourish me, especially as I've got older and work so much. I love what I do, and I'm trying to extend my ability to keep doing it. Anything that's a whole food. I love eggs. Sometimes, I have egg whites with potatoes. This morning, I had sweet potato pancakes with a side of yogurt. It's not that I don't care about taste, I do, but I want to make sure that it's stuff that's going to be prolonging me for the rest of the day. Especially with all the traveling, too. How do you keep yourself healthy while traveling a lot? I definitely need a premium travel experience. I use my American Express Business Platinum Card because I can relax in the lounge, get something to eat, and do a little work if I need to. I travel for work mostly, sometimes getting right off the plane and straight into business, so the peace and the comfort that I can obtain from that kind of experience is helpful when I go in and pitch. What are your wellness essentials? I have an array of different things that really feed into my ability to stay grounded and at ease. For me, therapy is seasonal. I think that therapy is good if you're not doing it all the time. I love journaling, prayer, and any type of fitness, such as Pilates, yoga, and hiking. All of that stuff brings me immense joy. I love a good hike by myself, and I like doing things solo, because I'm always around so many people when I'm working. I love bingeing comfort TV. It doesn't even have to be the most interesting thing. Spending time with family is huge for me, especially my little boy. I love to be with him. It's like time stops. What time do you get home from work? When I'm on set, I can go as late as 2 a.m., but if I get out at a normal time, then I'm off around 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Do you generally not eat dinner at home? I usually eat before I get home. And then when I'm back, I try to give my stomach a rest to digest because eating so late can mess me up for the next morning and disturb my sleep. Are you consciously intermittent fasting? I don't think of it that way. I think about it in terms of my gut. I've had a lot of health issues with PCOS, my nervous system, and my stomach, which has always been very sensitive. So, over these past few years, it's been really important for me to understand how to help my stomach and what foods are ticking it off, because when your gut brain is good, the rest of your brain is good. Once you find out what works for you, it makes a real difference. A lot of times, they're telling you the things that are good for you, but they're not necessarily good for you. Or they're telling you the things that are bad for you, but they're not necessarily bad for you. People often say, "No rice, no potatoes," but my body prefers those, and I'm not saying they've got to be deep-fried. I pair that with something fibrous, protein, or beans. That's good for me. Do you have a go-to drink? Yes, whiskey. With ice? No, I don't want it watered down! Good point. Do you have a skincare routine? It's kind of simple, but there are certain ingredients I like to use. Niacinamide, over-the-counter retinol — not prescribed because I don't want to go too harsh. I love La Roche Posay Mela B3 for dark spots, and also La Roche Posay's kids' and adults' SPF because it doesn't burn my eyes. I like oil-based cleansers, especially if I'm doing a lot of performing. Sometimes the makeup's coming on and off, and I don't want a cleanser that's going to be too stripping. I do switch up products because I honestly think that you have to learn your skin and be able to touch, feel, and look at it, and then define what you're going to do based on that. What's your nighttime routine? I love watching TV and oiling my hair while in the bath, using face wash and moisturizer, setting out my clothes, and turning on my bed warmer. It's a warming blanket from Amazon. I put it underneath my sheet, and it's perfect. I lie in bed. I might look at my phone or journal, drop a couple of magnesium drops in my water, maybe a little bit of turmeric, and sip on that. I have a bean bag eye mask. Sometimes, I microwave it. I put it on my eyes, and I'm out. I'll always go to sleep to some sitcom like "Girlfriends" or "Gilmore Girls" — any type of comfort show. Read the original article on Business Insider

Steadfast and Strong: Invest in These 2 Durable American Giants

Betting against the United States when it comes to business has been a mistake. American Express is a beneficiary of continued economic growth in the United States. Amazon has spent hundreds of millions on infrastructure, with much of that in the U.S. 10 stocks we like better than American Express › The United States government pivoted to an America-first strategy. Whether you agree or disagree with this strategy, it is the reality we are dealing with as investors today. You cannot invest in the world you wish existed, but you can invest in the world as it actually is. The U.S. grew its lead when it comes to gross domestic product (GDP), with GDP per capita of over $80,000 compared to the average European Union GDP per capita of just over $40,000. Reinvestment into America may further expand this GDP gap. The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution is centered in America, with most technological innovations still coming from the United States. Here are two durable American stocks to invest in and ride the reshoring wave. The first stock literally has "America" in its name: American Express (NYSE: AXP). The financial services giant has been a mainstay in the United States for over 100 years and is now one of the largest credit card issuers in the world focused on the travel and entertainment space. It's one of the mainstays of Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett's portfolio, as the Oracle of Omaha owns more than 21% of the company and 151 million shares. American Express has one key difference to other credit card issuers -- it operates its own payments network, which generates over half of its revenue coming from transaction fees on credit cards. Other issuers like JP Morgan Chase may use the duopoly pure-play payment rails in Visa or Mastercard to outsource this service. Vertical integration enables American Express to provide an immense amount of benefits to its credit card holders while simultaneously generating a boatload in profits. These grease the wheels of consumer spending in the United States by giving customers perks on airlines, hotels, travel, ride sharing, and plenty of basic shopping needs. That drives increased spending for American Express' merchant partners, making everyone in its ecosystem happy. A beautiful part of American Express' business model is its inflation protection. If the price of goods rises because of tariffs and someone buys one shirt for $100 instead of two for $50 each, American Express will still earn its small cut of every transaction through its credit card swipe transaction revenue. It should be able to raise its credit card fees along with inflation and will be able to issue more loans to its members. Loss rates on loans should remain low because of the company's target of wealthier spenders with better credit scores. In total, American Express is a bulletproof stock tailor made to ride the growth of the United States. At a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 21, the stock is trading at a reasonable price as well. There is perhaps no company that has invested more in America in the last 20 years than Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). The e-commerce and cloud computing company spent a cumulative $355.7 billion on capital expenditures from 2015 to 2024, with most of that spending coming in the last few years and in the United States. It helped raise wages for millions of workers on the lower end by bringing its starting hourly rates to around $20 or higher. This growth will only continue in the years to come. AI infrastructure spending is centered in the United States. Amazon's cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), should benefit immensely from the growth of AI, which is why the company is planning to spend over $100 billion on capital expenditures in 2025. The shipping, delivery, and warehouse infrastructure built by Amazon facilitates online shopping with same- and next-day delivery for Prime members. Amazon is at risk if tariffs on China stay elevated for a long time due to the amount of Chinese merchants on its website, but this is not a long-term concern. In e-commerce, Amazon generally makes money by taking a cut of merchant sales, advertising, and its Prime subscription service. It does not matter if sellers are from China, Mexico, or directly from the United States: Amazon will earn its cut either way. Over the next decade, there is an opportunity for Amazon to invest hundreds of billions of dollars more into the U.S. in order to improve its e-commerce infrastructure and more importantly take advantage of the growing demand for AI in cloud computing. This should lead overall revenue growth and earnings for Amazon to grow in the years to come. With a P/E ratio of 33, which is close to an all-time low for the stock, Amazon is a good stock to buy to bet on the American growth story continuing. Stock Market Sell-Off: 1 Magnificent Dividend Stock to Buy Right Now

Dividends are a great way to build sustainable income over the long term, especially if you buy dividend growth stocks. That way, even if the market is going through a major bout of volatility as it is in 2025, your portfolio will send you a steady (and growing) income quarter after quarter. This can be used to reinvest in more stocks, or as income for your personal expenses. Stock market volatility is a great reminder that a portfolio dedicated to hypergrowth technology stocks that do not pay dividends can lead to huge ups and downs in the short run. In order to minimize this roller coaster -- if that is your goal -- you might want to add some dividend stocks to your portfolio. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Here's why American Express (NYSE: AXP) is a magnificent dividend stock to buy and watch appreciate over the long term. American Express was founded in 1850, making it 175 years old. Its current business model can be attributed to the launch of its credit card line in 1958. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest credit card issuers in the United States and increasingly around the globe. As of the end of the first quarter, American Express had an estimated 147.5 million total credit cards in circulation. In the quarter, it added 3.4 million net new credit cards to its network, the same figure by which it grew in Q1 2024. Adding new cards to the American Express ecosystem is an important forward-looking indicator of future earnings growth for the company. Many customers will stick with American Express for many years, leading to huge lifetime values for these credit card acquisitions. Millennials and Gen Z customers are increasingly attracted to American Express' credit cards that offer perks for airline travel, hotels, and restaurants. These younger demographics accounted for 35% of spending on American Express last quarter, growing 14% year over year, and are the future of the American Express business. With a push toward higher-spending customers with strong credit scores, American Express has much better write-off rates than other consumer lending companies. Its net write-off rate was 2.1% last quarter compared to 5% at competitor Discover Financial. Even if the economy goes through a downturn, American Express customers will be able to weather any storm much better than the average bank or consumer lender. Plus, American Express' revenue is not only from credit card loans. Over half of its revenue comes from swipe fees when cards use the American Express network, with another 14% coming from annual fees charged to customers to use the cards in the first place. American Express is not a levered financial institution that will crater in a recession, which makes its earnings much more stable than other bank lending competition. Steady growth in new card acquisitions and spending on the American Express network has led to a 152% growth in earnings per share (EPS) for the company in the last 10 years. Along with this growth, American Express has grown its dividend per share by a cumulative 120% over that same time frame. Last quarter, it announced a 17% hike to the quarterly dividend. The current dividend yield is just 1.09%, but this should grow over every year based on the cost basis for anyone buying today. Consistency is the name of the game for American Express, making it a fantastic dividend growth stock to own over the long term. What makes it even better is the large share buyback program the company has implemented, bringing shares outstanding down 30% in the last 10 years alone. A reduction in shares outstanding makes each existing shareholder that much larger of an owner of American Express, which is why Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway now owns over 21% of the business without buying any new shares for years. These share count reductions make it much easier to grow the dividend-per-share payout as well, seeing as you have fewer and fewer shares you are obligated to pay a dividend to every quarter. A combination of dividend growth and share repurchases can make investors richer over the long haul, which is why American Express is the ultimate dividend stock for investors to own right now.
