Chatra village bridge project gets stuck in bureaucratic limbo

Chatra: The 2,000 residents of Potam village under Hedum panchayat in remote Naxal-hit Lawalong block of Chatra district would have to face transportation hurdles again during the rainy season as their demand for a bridge continues to be ignored. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Govt teams visited the place several times to measure the construction site, but the work never began. Area residents said that they have been awaiting a bridge over the Thekhi river since independence. Despite survey teams's visit to the site multiple times, around 300 households, including students and workers, are forced to walk 1.5 km daily to access the main road. "Schoolchildren are forced to navigate a treacherous 1.5 km path through bushes and cross a 300-ft stretch of the rain-fed Thekhi river to reach their school transport," said a villager. Area resident Somnath Yadav, who has been pursuing bridge construction since 2010, highlighted that 78 years post-Independence, the village lacks basic amenities. "Medical emergencies are particularly challenging, requiring a 1.5 km walk to reach healthcare facilities. During monsoons, residents must take a 10 km detour via Jawari village. Despite repeated surveys and measurements, no concrete action has materialised," he said. Students Amit Kumar (Std-3) and Bablu Kumar(Std-6) expressed their daily struggle of walking a kilometre to school, emphasising their desire for a bridge. Hedum panchayat mukhiya Santosh Ram revealed that bridge proposals were approved in gram sabha meetings during 2022-2023, 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 fiscal years with requests for DMFT funding sent to district offices. "However, these proposals remain unprocessed," he said. Lawalong block development officer (BDO) Bipin Bharti said, "I will apprise the district administration to look into the matter and request the officials to take necessary steps."

Breast cancer vaccine moving to critical phase

(NewsNation) — Doctors are currently testing a vaccine for breast cancer they say can stop cancerous tumors from forming before they start. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women younger than 50, according to the American Cancer Society. The number of younger women being diagnosed with the disease has increased 1.5% each year since 2012. The vaccine, being developed by biotech company Anixa Biosciences, is nearing the end of its phase one trials and moving on to round two. Dr. Amit Kumar, the CEO of Anixa, joined NewsNation's 'Elizabeth Vargas Reports' and said women in the trial responded well to the vaccine, and there are no safety concerns with it. How long does it take weight loss drugs to work? 'Our approach is not to try and deal with the underlying cause, our approach is to train the immune system to destroy those cancer cells as they arise,' Kumar said. 'We think that this is going to be a game-changer.' Kumar added that the eventual goal is to prevent cancer entirely, but to also prevent it in women who have already been through cancer and are worried about a recurrence. The vaccine will officially move to phase two of its trials after meetings with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Kumar said he hopes the vaccine will be available to women to prevent cancer within the next few years. 'What's better than treating breast cancer is preventing it,' Kumar said. 'If we can do this for breast cancer, we will do it for other cancers, as well.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pharmacist doubles up as doctor to run a PHC in Prayagraj

For over five years, the daily turnout of 20 to 30 patients at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Prayagraj has been depending solely on a lone pharmacist—an unusual case highlighting administrative apathy. The pharmacist, posted at the PHC in Lalgopalganj area under Kaudihar development block of Soraon tehsil, has been unofficially doubling as a doctor, prescribing and dispensing medicines as per what he considers the best line of treatment. As per reports, the medical officer in-charge (MOIC) of the PHC, Dr Amit Kumar, was attached to the District Hospital in Gautambuddha Nagar during the Covid pandemic in August 2020. Since then, the MOIC has not returned to his original posting as the superintendent of the district hospital in Gautambuddha Nagar has refused to relieve him, citing a shortage of doctors at the hospital. According to chief medical officer (CMO) Prayagraj, Dr Arun Kumar Tiwari, despite several letters sent to senior officials of the health department in Lucknow, no concrete action has been taken so far. 'Dr Amit Kumar continues to draw a salary for working in Prayagraj but has failed to join duties here, as he has not been relieved for over five years. Patients visiting the PHC are suffering, yet no action has been initiated by officials in Lucknow,' he said. Dr Amit Kumar confirmed he was attached to the district hospital in Gautambuddha Nagar in August 2020, during the first wave of Covid-19. 'I was sent on a temporary basis to manage the heavy rush of Covid-19 patients. But I haven't received a relieving letter from the hospital superintendent since then due to the shortage of doctors,' he explained. Rajesh Maurya, the pharmacist at the Lalgopalganj PHC, said, 'Around 20 to 30 patients come daily. I dispense medicines to the best of my knowledge. Since the MOIC post has remained vacant for over five years, in serious cases, I refer patients to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Kaudihar, located around 20 km away.' As per records, Dr Amit Kumar was appointed as MOIC of the Lalgopalganj PHC on July 3, 2020. He was later attached to the district hospital in Gautambuddha Nagar on August 29, 2020. Dr Anurag Tiwari, superintendent of CHC Kaudihar, under which the PHC functions, confirmed the situation. 'It's true that the PHC has been running without a MOIC. The issue lies with higher authorities in Lucknow, who are not taking necessary steps. Sadly, it's the patients who continue to suffer,' he said. As per government norms, a PHC is established for a minimum population of 30,000.
