Gurgaon scorched, but not for long: Rain soon
Gurgaon: Hot and sultry weather conditions continued on Friday, with the city recording maximum temperature at 42.9 degrees Celsius, three notches higher than normal for this time of the year.
Night wasn't of much relief. The city's minimum temperature was 30.7 degrees Celsius, 0.6°C higher than the previous day and a departure of 4°C from normal.
While the city has just escaped a heatwave, other parts of the state haven't. "Till June 14, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Haryana," an IMD official said.
According to IMD guidelines, a heatwave in plains is declared when the maximum temperature hits 45°C or more, or when it rises above 40°C with a departure of at least 4.5°C from normal.
But relief may be ahead. "Light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places across the state between June 15 and 16, followed by thunderstorms and gusty winds from June 15 to 18," the official said, adding that a slight dip of 2–4°C in maximum temperatures is anticipated after June 15.
Gurgaon is likely to witness maximum temperatures in the range of 36°C to 40°C from June 15 to 19, according to the Met department. The city's minimum temperature might remain between 27°C and 30°C during the same period.

The department has advised residents to avoid direct exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. "Exposure to excessive heat can lead to a heat stroke, a potentially lethal condition, defined by a core body temperature greater than 104°F (40°C). Essentially, when the body's ability to regulate its temperature fails, it leads to a life-threatening event with potentially significant systemic effects.
Early signs to look out for are extreme weakness, dizziness or fainting. One can also experience some level of confusion. Some severe symptoms include elevated heart rate, delirium, blurred vision, slurred speech and in some serious cases, seizures.
"It is important to be aware of early warning signs of heat illnesses, so they can be dealt with as soon as possible. Children and the elderly face are more at risk. Individuals who already have health issues are much more vulnerable.
This includes people with poorly managed blood pressure, diabetes, and heart, liver, or kidney diseases. It is extremely important to stay hydrated to prevent heat stroke," said Dr Amitabha Ghosh, consultant, internal medicine, Manipal Hospital, Gurgaon.
Experts stressed that residents need to make sure their houses have adequate ventilation. To let in fresh air during cooler times, open your doors and windows. To keep the heat out during the day, keep shutters, blinds, or curtains closed, especially on windows that get direct sunlight. Consume foods that are easy to digest and high in water content, and steer clear of fatty, hot or heavy food. Taking showers or baths can help too.
