Scrap Agnipath scheme, resume regular recruitments: Warring to Centre
1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab Congress pesident Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has called on the central govt to scrap the 'Agnipath' recruitment scheme in the armed forces and resume regular recruitments . Warring said the time has come to reconsider the policy, calling the Agnipath scheme "discriminatory," citing recent incidents that highlight its shortcomings. He referred to the death of an Agniveer from Punjab in Jammu due to a bullet injury, whose family, he claimed, has not received any compensation. "It is seen that when Agniveers are martyred, they are not given pension benefits or accorded the status of a martyr — even though they serve and fight like regular soldiers," Warring said. He argued that the circumstances under which the scheme was initially launched have drastically changed, particularly in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. "The Govt of India probably did not anticipate such developments when it conceived this scheme," he said. Warring emphasised that given the current security scenario, it is imperative to revert to regular recruitment in the defence forces. He also demanded that all 'Agniveers' recruited under the scheme so far be absorbed as regular soldiers. He noted that states like Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh — traditionally the largest contributors to India's armed forces — have been worst affected by the Agnipath policy. The Congress party, he said, made the scrapping of the scheme a key promise in its 2024 election manifesto. "I hope the BJP govt at the Centre realises the gravity and urgency of the situation. This should not be treated as a matter of prestige. Scrapping the Agnipath scheme and making only regular appointments is the need of the hour," Warring asserted. MSID: 121295312 413 |

Congress backs AAP govt efforts on water issue
Chandigarh: The Punjab Congress extended its full support to the state govt in its efforts to safeguard Punjab's waters. Party president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring deputed senior leaders, including former speaker Rana KP Singh and former minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, to represent the party at the all-party meeting convened by CM Bhagwant Mann . Warring stated that he was unable to attend the meeting as he was away. Briefing the media after the meeting, Rana and Bajwa affirmed that the Congress conveyed its complete and wholehearted support to the state govt in its mission to protect Punjab's water resources . They emphasised that the party stood firmly with the govt in addressing the issue through both legal and political avenues. They suggested that the state govt should move the Supreme Court and also seek an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to present Punjab's case. They proposed that CM Mann lead an all-party delegation to meet the PM. If an appointment is not granted, they added, the state govt may consider staging a dharna outside the PM's residence, with Congress pledging to participate in full solidarity. Tripat Bajwa reiterated that the people of Haryana are like brothers to Punjabis and that Punjab has always provided Haryana with its rightful share of water. However, he said, since Punjab itself faces acute water scarcity, it is not in a position to spare any additional water. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cost Of Amusement Park Equipment From Mexico Might Surprise You - See Tips Amusement Park Equipment | search ads Click Here Undo Rana KP Singh pointed out that Haryana was benefiting unfairly from the Centre's influence over the Bhakra Beas Management Board. He highlighted that Haryana already utilised 104% of its allocated water share by May 3—well ahead of the permissible date of May 21. Both leaders assured the CM that the Punjab Congress would stand like a rock with the govt in its efforts to safeguard the state's water interests. Meanwhile, PCC President Warring appreciated the stand taken by the two senior leaders at the all-party meeting and reiterated that the Punjab Congress would fully support whatever course of action the govt decides to pursue. ‘No water to spare': Congress backs AAP govt, but asks it to stop dharna drama
The Punjab Congress leadership Thursday said that the state did not have a drop of water to spare for Haryana and blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for orchestrating injustice against Punjab's farmers in the intensifying water dispute with Haryana. In a statement, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring warned that people of the state will not allow a single drop of extra water to flow to any other state. He said what has been the rightful due of Haryana has already been provided to it and it cannot seek extra water when Punjab was itself too much short of it. The PCC president demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann must call an emergency all- party meeting to devise an effective strategy to save Punjab's waters. Referring to the AAP announcement of holding protests and dharnas, he said it was just a drama aimed at diverting the public attention. 'When you are in government, why do you need to stage any dharna?' he asked the AAP government while telling it to stop this 'drama' and take everyone along. Warring said there was no reason for Haryana to seek extra water when it had already got its share. 'We cannot let our own state go dry to provide water to others,' he said while assuring full support and cooperation to the government to deal with the situation. The PCC president accused the AAP government of hypocrisy, alleging it had a secret understanding with the BJP which was exposed when it unleashed a reign of terror on the peacefully protesting farmers. 'When you already have such an understanding with the BJP, why do you need to enact the drama of protests?' he asked the AAP leadership, while warning it against any compromise or surrender of Punjab's water to any other state. Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa said with Punjab's reservoirs depleted and 76.5 per cent of its groundwater blocks overexploited, Haryana's demand for 8,500 cusecs threatens Punjab's agricultural backbone which produces 185 lakh metric tonnes for India's food security. Bajwa accused the BJP of sacrificing Punjab for political gains, demanding urgent action to safeguard the state's water rights. 'Haryana has already consumed 103 per cent of its 2.987 MAF water share, yet seeks more, flouting prior agreements,' he said. The LoP said the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), under BJP's political grip, has dismissed Punjab's evidence of Haryana's overdraw, railroading the state's objections in recent deliberations.

People fearful Punjab might slip back into dark era of terror: Amrinder Singh Raja Warring
Chandigarh: Punjab Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring expressed grave apprehensions about the security situation prevailing in Punjab, saying people were apprehensive that Punjab might slip back into the dark era of terror after regular grenade attacks on police posts and other places. Addressing a press conference at the Congress Bhawan, Warring also expressed strong doubts over the Punjab Police deadline of eradicating drugs from the state by May 31. Replying to a question about the reported seizure of 4.5 kg of RDX in Amritsar, he said the situation was of serious concern. He mentioned that old-timers recall that terrorism in Punjab started in the same way with grenade attacks here and there until the situation turned out of control. He hoped that the Punjab govt was seized of the matter and was taking it seriously. Warring said there were regular reports of drugs and weapons being smuggled into Punjab. He pointed out that while the media reported these things regularly, when Congress leaders raised questions, the govt slapped FIRs. Warring said both the central and the state govts were responsible for ensuring peace, safety, and security of people in Punjab. He demanded that people living in border areas must be properly and adequately compensated in case they needed to be evicted if the situation demanded so. He reiterated the party's stand that it stood by the govt in whatever action it deemed fit to give a befitting reply to Pakistan over the terror attack in Pahalgam. Replying to a question on Punjab DGP's May 31 deadline to finish drugs from Punjab, he said although he had doubts about it, he still hoped and wished that the Punjab Police succeeded in it. He pointed out similar claims were made earlier by the Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal and chief minister Bhagwant Mann without any results on the ground. To a question about Punjab farmer unions having put a condition with the govt of India that they would not attend the meeting if there were any Punjab govt representatives, Warring said farmers' anger and lack of trust in the state govt was natural. He pointed out how the Punjab govt had brutally evicted farmers from the protest sites. At the same time, he added, the Congress party did not have many expectations from the central govt either, as it was only delaying the matter. Replying to another question about an FIR registered in Ludhiana over the alleged raising of 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogan there, Warring said this was unacceptable and those responsible must be brought to book. The PCC president also announced that the 'Samvidhan Bachao' rally, which was earlier scheduled for May 4, would now be held on May 11 at Sangrur. It will be attended by senior leadership from the AICC, including general secretary Bhupesh Baghel, secretary Ravinder Dalvi, and the PCC leadership. MSID:: 120697714 413 |
