Despite heavy footfall, city's public parks devoid of upkeep

1 2 3 Ranchi: Several public parks in Ranchi, including some of the city's most frequented green spaces, suffer from prolonged neglect, with broken infrastructure and a lack of basic amenities raising safety and accessibility concerns. While the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) claims to oversee 19 parks across the city, maintenance on the ground remains far from satisfactory. Morabadi Children's Park, one of the most popular parks in the city, draws hundreds of families every week. However, visitors are greeted with broken slides, rusted swings, damaged stone pathways, and poor lighting. "Children are forced to play on unsafe equipment. It's dangerous, especially after dark when the lights barely work," said Amritanjali, a university professor and regular visitor. The problem is not limited to Morabadi. Parks in Kokar, Doranda, and Harmu also reflect similar deterioration. In Kokar Park, decorative lights have been installed, but most areas of the park remains poorly lit due to erratic upkeep. Most of the complaints also range from unusable toilets and damaged benches. "We are currently awaiting reports on the availability of basic facilities and damages caused in the last six months across selected parks. In Morabadi, the entity managing the children's play area submitted a list of requirements, and a committee was formed to examine the request," said Sanjay Kumar, additional municipal commissioner.
