Citi Keeps Its Conviction on Mercadolibre (MELI) Despite Regulatory Noise
On May 19, Citi analyst Joao Soares reiterated his Buy rating on MercadoLibre Inc. (NASDAQ:MELI) with an unchanged price target of $2,450. The analyst primarily discussed the recent regulatory issues in Brazil, its largest market by revenue, and how MercadoLibre is strong enough to weather these issues. Recently, Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has requested the court to block the websites of Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and MercadoLibre. They have argued that both platforms have been unable to stop pirated, non-licensed mobile phone sales. A person browsing the world's largest e-commerce marketplaces for the perfect product. The analyst highlighted that MercadoLibre has been making robust efforts to comply with domestic regulations and cooperating with Anatel to prevent such illegal sales. While an unfavourable decision could impact the company's revenues and millions of customers, its measures indicate its capacity for resolving the issues and potential for a favourable solution. He thus maintains his positive view on the company's long-term growth outlook. In mid-last week, DBS analyst Nashrullah Putra Sulaeman reaffirmed his Buy rating on the stock, basing his bullish opinion on continued growth in e-commerce and its focus on growing fintech and logistics business. Viasat demonstrates D2H satellite communication technology
Viasat has performed the first successful direct-to-handset (D2H) communication test using direct-to-device (D2D) technology in L-band in Brazil. The demonstration showcased two smartphones connecting directly via satellite using 3GPP NTN standards without the involvement of other terrestrial infrastructure. This signifies the start of a new age of connectivity in the country where only about 18% of the geographic area is covered by cellular networks, according to Anatel data published in September 2024. The event, held in the nations capital, was attended by officials from Anatel (Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency), and representatives from the government, telecommunications sector, and partners. The demonstration focused on two primary scenarios in which D2D technology was utilised: direct-to-handset communication and data transmission for Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices in the agricultural and transportation sectors, with plans for expansion into additional markets. Leandro Gaunszer, General Manager, Viasat Brazil, said: 'This demonstration is a significant achievement for connectivity in Brazil. It shows that reliable primary satellite communications over smartphones and IoT applications are far more available, opening the door for a future where technology will help build the bridge to the unconnected and make it available to a wider range of individuals and companies, regardless of where they are located. Our extensive L-band coverage and alignment of satellite technologies with 3GPP standards provide a strong foundation for introducing this groundbreaking solution to the country. This will contribute to the development of a more inclusive, interconnected, and effective community and network for both consumers and businesses.'

Brazil regulator authorizes fresh 7,500 Starlink satellites to operate locally
SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Brazil's telecommunications regulator Anatel authorized Elon Musk's SpaceX to add 7,500 new Starlink satellites to operate in the Latin American nation, the watchdog said on Tuesday. The decision more than doubles the 4,408 Starlink satellites currently allowed by Anatel to operate, according to the statement from the regulator. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Anatel said the decision also includes the expansion of frequency bands, adding it decided to maintain the expiration date for SpaceX's authorizations for 2027. Despite the approval, Anatel also said its members see the need to update Brazil's current regulatory framework, noting there is a gap to deal with market domain, spatial sustainability and digital sovereignty.
