132-Year-Old Pyrex Plant Closes for Good After Four Shutdown Delays
The Anchor Hocking Glass Plant in Charleroi, Pennsylvania has roots going back 132 years, but the last two have brought with it a unique kind of whiplash. The 300+ workers supply Pyrex glass – a product line owned by Instant Brands until a 2023 bankruptcy led to the sale of its housewares division to a company called Centre Lane Partners, owner of glass company Anchor Hocking. The news – made public in September – was greeted with outrage, as stakeholders rallied outside the plant and lawmakers asked company leaders to reverse course. Pennsylvania then-senator Bob Casey even called on the FTC to investigate the events that led to the plant's closure decision. Meanwhile, a confusing chain of events ensued and, by February, indecision seemed to be guiding the futures of the plant's employees. By February, the closure had been delayed three times and 'at the 11th hour' it happened again. Workers had reportedly cleaned out their lockers by the time they were told that the plant would remain open for a few months longer in order to fulfill a large order. But by then, as reported by Pittsburgh local news outlet WESA, interest in the factory's fate had waned. Some blamed this on the fact that the political fortunes of local lawmakers had been decided, leaving few champions for Corelle in Charleroi. Now, we might actually now be at the end of the road for the factory. Last week, CBS News reported that 'after a long and emotional roller coaster ride, the Corelle Brands plant owned by Anchor Hocking closed.' This time, reports suggest that it's for the final time. And while Charleroi Borough manager Joe Manning said it was 'a gut punch,' he did add that several parties had expressed interest in possibly repurposing the site. Tim Walz Calls On Fellow Democrats To Return His Tupperware
ST. PAUL, MN—Making an impassioned plea to his colleagues in an effort to inspire concrete action, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota publicly called on his fellow Democrats Monday to return his Tupperware at once. 'To the esteemed members of the Democratic Party—I implore you to stand up for what's right and give back any pieces of my Tupperware you have yet to return,' said the former vice presidential candidate, calling on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and other top Democrats to set a good example of kitchen container etiquette. 'For too long, this party has sat back and watched as my casserole dish goes without its corresponding lid. We as a country, as well as my famous green bean hot dish, deserve better than freezing leftovers in ziplock bags when perfectly good freezer-safe Tupperwares are going unreturned. It is therefore our duty as defenders of the Constitution to see to it that loaned out containers are properly washed and handed back to their rightful owners in a timely manner—preferably with something tasty that you made inside.' At press time, Walz had urged Democratic voters to keep calling their representatives to demand his vintage Anchor Hocking dishware be returned.

Charleroi glass plant employees asked to stay for 3 more months
Employees at the Anchor Hocking glass factory say this week has been a roller coaster of emotions. People who were just laid off, just found out that they're still needed and are being asked to come back. 'Up and down up and down. It's like they're playing games with us,' said Daniele Byrne. For 35 years, Daniele Byrne has worked at the Anchor Hocking glass factory in Charleroi. The plant, which also goes by the Corelle and Pyrex plant has been a Washington County staple for 132 years. 350 employees got word in September 2024, that the the Ohio-based glass manufacturer would shut down. The closure date kept getting pushed back - until this week - when tiered layoffs started. Byrne says things seemed pretty final - until 2:30 Thursday afternoon. 'Two crews finished up. We had given their papers to them because I was with HR when they were passing them out. And then hurried up and got on the phone and called everyone to the cafeteria and told them that they need to run 3 more months,' Byrne explained. Jim Watt, who is Vice President of the union that represents the workers confirmed Anchor Hocking recalling the employees who were laid off. Watt says the workers' contract was due to expire at the end of this month, but that the union signed a 6-month extension that includes a 10% pay increase for everyone at the plant. Byrne said, 'There were some people that were very upset because they think we're being used and there are people that are happy because they don't have nothing else right now.' Watt says the Corelle plant will now close sometime in May. Byrne is hoping the company will make the decision to remain open beyond that. 'It's a big loss if we do end up closing up, but I hope somebody upstairs is on our side and they're going to keep us going,' she added. While Employees don't know how long the plant will remain open - they do know that they'll have jobs until mid-May. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.
