Boys' lacrosse has a home After a long search, a venue has been secured for the boys' lacrosse finals. All four divisions will play at Mass. Fire at block of Andover flats forces residents from homes
People living in a block of flats were forced to leave after a fire spread through three floors and the were called to the building in Charlton Road, Andover, on Sunday at about 16:00 from Hampshire and Dorset tackled the fire through the night, with 13 fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms and two water carriers living nearby were advised to close their doors and windows due to the smoke. Hampshire 29-year-old to take on groundbreaking Europe walk
A former addict who shares her struggles through poems on TikTok hopes to document a groundbreaking challenge for suicide Birks, 29, from Andover, Hampshire, wants to be the first person to travel on foot from Europe's northernmost point in Norway, to its southernmost point on the Greek island of solo challenge is a 8,500km (5,280 mile) journey that will take her through 10 countries and last about a Birks said: "I'm doing this trek to make lots of noise around suicide prevention." She said she started taking antidepressants aged 13 to treat persistent insomnia, anxiety and her teens she struggled with anorexia and bulimia, before becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol at aged said: "It wasn't apparent at first: when you're young, people your age are drinking lots as well."Ms Birks said her "party girl" persona became increasingly destructive in her early 20s, and eventually "spiralled into everyday using".Then, in March 2021, she ran away from home and became homeless."My family didn't really know where I was. I put them through hell," she said. "I tried to take my life three times. Luckily, I was really bad at it."In May 2022, she found herself with "nowhere else to go" and was accepted back by her family "without hesitation".A friend posted about a recovery programme and she decided to attend an online meeting, which she said was "amazing".During her recovery, she was diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder. She said: "I found poetry in recovery, I wasn't even 30 days clean, and I just picked up a pen and a piece of paper and started writing."By the time you get to rock bottom, you've got this rucksack on your back filled with so much stuff, and you think you're going to take it to your grave."Poetry became my way of expressing that, when saying things really bluntly felt too scary."Her poems struck a chord on TikTok, where she has more than 37,000 said: "I made a vow to myself that I didn't want anyone else to go through years of feeling lost and misunderstood."I just want people to know that it's OK to talk about it more, and there's no shame in anything that you're struggling with." She has been training to carry everything she needs in her 20kg backpack, including a tent and a large flag bearing the names of people who have taken their own lives. Some of them are friends, others were sent in by bereaved well-wishers online."I'm going to hit so many points where I think 'I don't know how I'm going to do this," she said."That's why I've got the flag, and that's why I've got people's names on my tent, because it's all these little reminders of the bigger picture."I'm determined to do this, so I know I will."She hopes to "honour the lives of those lost to suicide" and show people "it does get good again"."If you take it one step at a time, eventually you will find yourself back in the light again," she added. Hawk conservation trust receives grant
A birds of prey conservation trust has received more than £15,000 in government funding to improve its Hawk Conservancy Trust in Andover, Hampshire, was awarded the grant from the Rural England Prosperity Fund by Test Valley Borough grant will cover half the costs of a project to fund new bollard lighting throughout the grounds, and modern PA systems in two of the main flying demonstration Smout, chief executive officer of the trust, said the funds meant their facilities would be "significantly" improved for evening events, "addressing past concerns about lighting while also protecting the planet". She added: "The enhanced PA systems will also create a more immersive experience, ensuring all visitors, including those with accessibility needs, can fully enjoy our demonstrations."Maureen Flood, councillor for the Anna ward, said the trust played a "vital role in educating visitors and protecting birds of prey". "The new lighting system replaces a less efficient battery lighting system and prioritises sustainability while enhancing accessibility, and the upgraded PA systems will provide a more engaging experience for all visitors," she explained. In addition to the £15,460 grant, the trust has also received £3,750 from a UK Shared Prosperity Fund Net Zero grant, which is going towards a solar project aimed at reducing the organisation's carbon footprint. Man with history of sex offenses accused of peering into Massachusetts college dorm rooms
With a long history of sex offenses, 39-year-old Tyler Jacquard of Melrose was back in a courtroom, this time charged with being a "peeping Tom" on April 29 and May 2, allegedly peering into first floor dorm rooms at Merrimack College in Andover. "The officer observed a person with a light blue hooded sweatshirt outside the bedroom windows of that townhouse," said Essex County Assistant District Attorney Brian Barrett. Incidents at other colleges It wasn't long before police uncovered the disturbing history that now has Jacquard tagged as a Level 3 sex offender, including peeping Tom charges on several college campuses from Wellesley to Boston University to Endicott College. "In November of 2018 Mr. Jacquard was arrested after being found on the Endicott College campus in Beverly after a female student had reported awakening from her sleep in her dorm room to Mr. Jacquard standing in a hoodie at the foot of her bed," said Barrett. Former Melrose Police Chief Michael Lyle has had his own run-in with Jacquard. "Obviously the system is failing him and it's failing all the victims out there," said Lyle. He was arrested in Melrose in another peeping Tom case, and Lyle says he wants to know why Jacquard is always back on the street. "He's a repeat offender gosh only knows what he can do next," Lyle said. "We thought once the Melrose case was closed that we'd never see him again and here he is again." Convictions for sex offenses In fact, Jacquard has had about 20 interactions with the criminal justice system with ten convictions ranging from peeping Tom (disorderly conduct) charges to publicly committing sex acts. "Because of the number of convictions for sex offenses this defendant is now facing the possibility of commitment as a sexually dangerous person for one day to life," said Barrett. Asked to describe how dangerous he believes Jacquard is, former Chief Lyle said, "He's the highest and mostly likely to reoffend, that says it all right there." For now, Jacquard remains behind bars unable to make $15,000 bail in these latest cases at Merrimack College, facing yet another court date next month.
