NHS consultant with MND campaigns for more government funding

An NHS consultant with motor neurone disease said the condition had been "left behind" in research terms. Andrew Davies, from Hartley Witney in Hampshire, was diagnosed with the terminal illness last autumn and has been told he only has a few years to and his wife Milica are campaigning for more funding to find a treatment as they feel motor neurone disease (MND) has been overlooked compared to other illnesses. The Department of Health and Social Care said it would "continue to fund high-quality research" for MND. Mr Davies first noticed an "instability" in his ankle whilst on a family holiday and it then developed into "twitching muscles".Several months later he was told by doctors he had MND."It suddenly hit like a bombshell," he said."You step out of the diagnosis room and you meet the multi-disciplinary team, and then discussion is had about things like banking your voice [a process where individuals, often those with conditions affecting speech, record their voice to be used with communication aids]." Mrs Davies said the couple had "promised" their two children they would "seek a cure"."I think there's still an impression that it happens to a Rob Burrow, one person like that, every three months," she said."Well we need to know that in the UK, six Rob Burrows die every day of this disease".Rugby League player Rob Burrow raised about £15m for research in to MND, prior to his death from the condition last April, four universities, including the University of Oxford received £1m each to carry out research into MND thanks to a charity set up by late Rugby Union player Doddie Hallegger leads the MND project being run in Oxford."There are currently no treatments and I think it is really important to have more funding in to this kind of research," Dr Halleggar said.A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: "Motor neurone disease has a devastating impact on people's lives and we are determined to find a cure". "We are grateful to campaigners like Andy for the amazing work they continue to do, despite the personal difficulties they are facing, and will continue to fund high-quality research into motor neurone disease through the National Institute for Health and Care Research". Skylo Partners With Syniverse to Implement SMS Over Satellite for Verizon

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Syniverse, the world's most connected company, and Skylo Technologies, the pioneer in non-terrestrial network (NTN) communications, have collaborated to enable a simplified pathway for mobile network operators (MNOs) to introduce two-way, SMS messaging over satellite. In the breakthrough effort to launch native direct-to-device messaging for Verizon, Skylo has extended the Syniverse Evolved Mobility solution as a method for seamless integration, allowing mobile network operators like Verizon to integrate SMS over NTN with no changes in architecture, solutions, or hardware for the first time. This collaboration demonstrates that MNOs can provide their customers with the peace of mind of SMS messaging over satellite while using the same infrastructure and technology that is in place today. Skylo first introduced emergency messaging and location sharing to Verizon customers in 2024. SMS over satellite is currently available on select Verizon devices. Skylo utilizes dedicated, licensed Mobile Satellite Service spectrum in existing, globally allocated frequency bands to bring satellite connectivity and texting services to new markets around the world. This allows for continuous and contiguous coverage in rural and remote areas without requiring MNOs to share their valuable spectrum assets. It also avoids possible network interference that can occur when satellite and cellular networks attempt to share the same frequency band. "Whether you're atop a mountain, miles off the coast, or reeling from an earthquake, a satellite network offers peace of mind in a time of need — but only if you can access it," said Andrew Davies, Chief Executive Officer of Syniverse. "Evolved Mobility for Messaging helps mobile network operators overcome interoperability challenges when integrating with Non-Terrestrial Networks like Skylo." Syniverse Evolved Mobility for Messaging and Skylo use the same Diameter Protocol to integrate that MNOs are familiar with from their terrestrial network integrations. This enables safe, reliable, and scalable connectivity. Evolved Mobility for Messaging also mediates signaling to ensure network compatibility — even if home networks don't natively support Diameter-based messaging. Plus, it can be deployed seamlessly in the cloud, so it can be scaled to manage traffic volumes while maintaining consistent service levels. 'Consumers want the peace of mind to send text messages to their friends and family at any time. Skylo enables this newfound connectivity and a sense of freedom when outside of mobile network operators' coverage area. Our collaboration with Syniverse makes it easy for mobile network operators to extend the same technology used for terrestrial SMS to satellite communications. Skylo's standards-based solutions go beyond the air interface to include the entire cellular ecosystem,' said Jerome Baccelli, VP Engineering & Operations at Skylo. About Skylo Skylo Technologies is a global Non-Terrestrial Network service provider based in Mountain View, CA, offering a service that allows smartphones and IoT cellular devices to connect directly over existing satellites. Devices connected over satellite are managed and served by Skylo's commercial NTN vRAN, featuring a 3GPP standards-based cloud-native base station and core. Skylo works with existing satellite operators, network operators, and device makers to provide subscribers an anywhere, anytime connectivity solution between terrestrial and satellite networks. Skylo's focus is on enabling connected services for people outdoors and connected workflows for machines at work across critical industries such as agriculture, maritime, logistics, mining, and others, in addition to mass-market consumer devices. Chinese EV business to rival Elon Musk's Tesla will open branch in Bucks

A Chinese equivalent to Tesla is set to move to the Buckinghamshire/Berkshire border. BYD Auto, which specialises in battery electric vehicles and is best known for being behind London's new electric double-decker bus, will team up with ARC in Denham in order to expand on its presence on UK soil, whilst rivalling Elon Musk's business in the environmentally-friendly car market. It has taken over 27,000 sq. ft in Building 05 and chosen the campus for its UK HQ, which is focused on making public transport across Europe emission free. Andrew Davies, Leasing Director at ARC, said: 'We're delighted to welcome BYD to ARC Uxbridge. 'This is an exciting addition to our vibrant community, and we're looking forward to introducing and integrating BYD into our group-wide energy tech cluster. 'BYD's innovative approach perfectly complements ARC's innovation ecosystem.' The site will be based along Sanderson Road in the village. A statement from ARC reads: ARC Uxbridge is a connected innovation campus sitting within 70 acres of London's green belt. 'It is designed to foster creativity, innovation and collaboration, from the spaces such as Adapt, a dynamic co-working hub for campus' members, the Clubhouse, a café, seminar and meeting place, through the specially curated member's event programme and the surrounding green parkland, with trails, sport pitches and fishing lake.' The news comes at a good time for the Chinese company, as they have announced a year-to-year increase of 29 per cent in which they have made £83 billion in revenue. According to the BBC, BYD have now leapfrogged Tesla as the number one electrical vehicle company in the world at the time of writing. This comes after Elon Musk has been criticized for his close relationship with current US President Donald Trump, which has led to a drop in sales and a number of Telsas being damaged. Additionally, Chinese car markers have been hit with tariffs in several Western nations, leading to a rise being sold in other countries. Speaking at Car Dealer Live at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, Stellantis's UK chief, Eurig Druce, called for 'free trade' to remain in place. He said: ' I don't need taxation tariffs to be the way forward. 'It will create a lazy industry and it won't create the competitive nature that we need. 'We don't need barriers to free trade. I think we've invested billions as manufacturers into industry-leading technology, across full EV but also hybrid. 'What we need now are measures that are going to accelerate demand for those vehicles that we are making and a market which is confident.'
