‘No balls, nothing' – Ex-Rangers stars on Steven Gerrard's brutal and ‘scary' pre-season training regime
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has pulled the curtain back on the ferocious intensity of Steven Gerrard's training sessions. The Liverpool legend is the frontrunner to return to Ibrox and become the next Rangers boss. 3 Gerrard speaking with Gary McAlister during time at Rangers Credit: PA 3 Andy Halliday in training for Rangers Credit: Willie Vass - The Sun 3 Steven Gerrard and Josh Windass Credit: Willie Vass - The Sun Glasgow And if that turns out to be the case, some of the players could be in for a rude awakening come the 23rd of June when they are due to return to pre-season. Halliday, who played under Gerrard between 2018 and 2020, told the Open Goal podcast: "F***** hell it was hard. "Five three-minute runs, three times a week. "Say you've got a 24-man squad, you would get split into three groups. "I think the top eight if I remember correctly had to run 910 metres in three minutes - which is f****** rapid. "The middle eight was 870m or 840m, and the bottom eight 810m and [Alfredo] Morelos 500m. He used to plod round! "You end up getting fit to be fair, Gerrard would get you fit." Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass also spoke about his experience of training under the 44-year-old. He also said he regretted the way his time came to an end at Ibrox before joining Wigan in a deal worth £2.5 million on transfer deadline day. Windass added: "When we were doing those runs, Gerrard used to stand in the middle with his watch. He didn't say a word. Rangers hero Andy Halliday explains moment he was sent in from training after telling Pedro Caixinha he'd got Celtic formation wrong "There was one occasion when he was in the right channel and he whipped one round the defence for me, and I was like, 'oh good ball, gaffer'. "And he was like, 'I used to do that for [Fernando] Torres lad,'" He continued: "The runs were scary. You would do them in the morning, you would go to the pitch and there wouldn't be a cone anywhere. "No balls, nothing, just your runners on." Both players were full of praise for Michael Beale who was Gerrard's assistant before going on to take the top job himself. Beale has faced criticism for his managerial record following disappointing spells at Rangers and Sunderland. But Halliday and Windass lauded his expertise on the training pitch. Windass said: "He [Gerrard] wasn't a big talker. "He would come in during a training session and maybe say something to you. "But Mick would do all the presentations. " Halliday added: "He's a brilliant coach. "Personally, I don't think the fans would want it, but I think you would take him back. "Because he's the first-team coach, he's not coming back as the manager again." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

I'm a football WAG – haters tell me to hide my baby bump but I refuse to look like a tent, flaunting it is cute
A FOOTBALL WAG has hit back at trolls who tried to shame her for flaunting her baby bump - insisting it's "cuter" to show it off. Jilly Cross, from Glasgow, is married to ex-Rangers and current Motherwell star Andy Halliday. 4 4 She regularly posts her outfit choices and shopping hauls for her army of followers on social media (@jillyisabella). And since sharing the news that she's expecting her first baby with Andy this year, Jilly has enjoyed styling outfits around her growing bump. In a recent video, the mum-to-be - who has her own fashion brand Dula - paired low rise jeans with a white flowy crop top and blazer. While most fans gushed over "how glowing" she looked, one hater commented: "Is it mandatory to have your belly out in every video when you're pregnant? "We get it, put it away. "I'm not hating. It's my personal opinion." But Jilly instantly hit back with her typical humour and says she refuses to be left looking like a tent. In a clip, showing off her bump in a white co-ord, she said: "Now aside from the fact that we had beautiful weather over the weekend, 23 degrees, I'm assuming you're from Britain, and you decided to spend that indoors commenting hateful things on people's TikToks. Could never be me. "Although you said it's not hateful, it's not hate comments and it's just your opinion, I love when people say that. 'I'm not being a hater, it's just my opinion, like I'm entitled to it', it's just another way to say I'm an a***hole. But that's cute. Each to their own." Pulling her skirt up to cover her bump, she then continued: "You can't tell me that looks good and that's how you want me to walk about? I was dating the same guy for just over a year and he was hiding a secret pregnant wife - he even made jokes about her & lived by a fake name "I look like a tent from Decathlon, I look like a tent that was left in the Glastonbury Fields from last year. "You want me to walk about like this? "This is giving your bed sheets on the washing line, so I won't be doing that, it's not stylish of me." Jilly then insists "you can't tell me this isn't cuter" as she pulls her skirt waistband down again to sit below her bump. "Much more stylish, much more freeing, and in the heat that we're having, I don't want to overheat", she said. Jilly's clip has racked up almost 250,000 views with people jumping to her defence. One person said: "Something absolutely chilling about telling a woman who's pregnant to 'put it away'." 4 4 "It's actually impressive the things that upset people these days", wrote a second. A third cried: "DO NOT PUT IT AWAY!!!!! I demand to see the bump I'm loving seeing you style it." "God forbid you style yourself well while pregnant", fumed a fourth. A fifth gushed: "An absolute queen, I am screaming." Meanwhile a sixth said: "You look beautiful you are carrying precious cargo why not show it off." It comes after her footballer beau revealed he had to have his "phone on loud" on the sidelines in case Jilly went into labour while he was playing for Motherwell. 'I want to be there for the birth of my first baby — but hopefully she can hold off", he joked. But he added: 'The time has come and we're absolutely delighted that we've got the first baby on the way. The timing is good at the end of the season. 'I will have a couple of weeks off to spend every day with my wife and the baby. I'll get to do as much as I possibly can before the madness of next season starts again. 'We've got a really good network of support with both our families being from Glasgow. 'We've got mums and dads, brothers, sisters and cousins around who can help out where possible." We told earlier how Jilly was branded the " Lidl of WAGs" by a cruel troll. But the red-haired beauty immediately got the last laugh with her funny comeback. Replying with her typical humour, Jilly sarcastically hit back: "Do you mean Lidl as in little, like skinny? Wait, do you think I'm really skinny? [screams]."

Andy Halliday claim about Steven Gerrard and Rangers job gets louder with every passing hour
Andy Halliday says his former manager hasn't even been spoken to yet about the job at Ibrox Andy Halliday has claimed Steven Gerrard hasn't even been spoken to directly by Rangers yet, before it emerged the next manager target is still on the beach in Bahrain. It's claimed Gerrard is one of a number of contenders being considered by the new owners, holding the distinction of having already won the Premiership title at Ibrox. His name value is also an attractive proposition to the new San Francisco 49ers-backed decision-makers but he isn't the only name in contention, with Russell Martin, Davide Ancelotti and Gary O'Neil among those still in the running. Whether Gerrard and his family will be open to a return to the UK also remains to be seen as they've been settled in Bahrain since his move to Al-Ettifaq in 2023. Today Gerrard posted to his Instagram story from the seaside in Bahrain – a nail in the coffin to swirling rumours that he was in the UK to rubber-stamp his second spell at Ibrox. But Motherwell midfielder Halliday, who played under Gerrard during his first spell, took one things further when he claimed there hasn't even been direct contact between the club and the would-be boss yet. He said on Open Goal: "There's people who know a lot more than I do, but from what I've been told, Steven Gerrard hasn't even been spoken to once." The latest odds indicate Gerrard is the clear frontrunner as things stand with one bookie even describing it as a two-horse race between Gerrard and Ancelotti. Both of those prospective bosses have had periods over the past week or so where their moves looked imminent, but the rapidly changing landscape of a next manager hunt never stands still for long. It's also of course all happening against the backdrop of the Ibrox takeover which is itself yet to be formally green-lit. We understand that is still on course and will come at some time in June. As has been suggested by our man Keith Jackson on Hotline Live, it's a distinct possibility that the club plan to unveil it all in one go with the new era at Ibrox presented in a united front. Rangers ' first-team squad have been warned to prepare to go through 'hell' in pre-season should Steven Gerrard complete his grand return to Ibrox as manager. Hibs season review: Nightmares and dream scenarios in campaign of extremes
From relegation battle to Euro qualifiers, David Gray's men were forged in adversity Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Did you know with a Digital Subscription to Edinburgh News, you can get unlimited access to the website including our premium content, as well as benefiting from fewer ads, loyalty rewards and much more. Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... And … breathe. It's OK, nothing else is going to happen. Well, probably. At least not for a few weeks. When David Gray jokes about sticking his head in a fridge to bring down his core temperature at the end of a season of fever dreams and hallucinatory highs, he's only reflecting the feelings of Hibs fans everywhere. Whether you watched 2024-25 play out from the touchline, the back row of the main stand, your local pub or your front room, with or without a dodgy stick, you're bound to sympathise with the gaffer. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It's been wild, hasn't it? Occasionally horrifying in ways that ought to be outlawed. But never anything short of dramatic. And always entertaining. There's no need to look back at every cough, splutter and VAR decision that went for or against Hibs between mid-July of last summer and last weekend's season finale at home to Rangers. A game entirely in keeping with the lunacy of, especially, a Scottish Premiership campaign unrivalled for craic, banter and foam-spitting fury. So let's break it down, instead, into themes. Highlights and lowlights. Heroes and the odd villain. Plus a few other random observations from a year of living dangerously close to mental and emotional exhaustion, for those on the front line. Grim times that had EVERYONE worried for the gaffer One of the most encouraging aspects of the campaign, as a whole, is the consistent messaging of a majority of supporters. Seriously. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Even when they were howling from the rooftops about the poverty of performances and results, while protesting against the board and senior leadership figures, fans never went for 'Sir' David Gray. Some saw signs of promise in what the former club captain was trying to do. Others just desperately wanted to believe that the Scottish Cup hero would make a decent fist of managing the club he grew up supporting. There were definitely some bleak moments as Hibs won just ONE of their opening 14 league games. Watching Andy Halliday, of all people, score a late winner for Motherwell at Easter Road. Late goals conceded, eh? That was something of a recurring theme. Simon Murray. Bruce Anderson. Not one but two injury time goals as Luca Stephenson and Meshack Ubochioma scored to give Dundee United a 3-2 win at Tannadice on a day when goalkeeper Joe Bursik punching new signing Jack Iredale in the back of the head, rather than connecting with the ball, felt like a new low. We could add other big, brutal and below-the-belt blows to the list of insulting injuries to befall Hibs during that stormy start to Gray's first season in management. But let's just say that nobody was particularly happy with what they saw. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Turning point(s) sparks a remarkable revival Yeah, yeah, Rocky Bushiri. Injury time equaliser. Madness and mayhem at Easter Road. Tuesday, November 26, 2024 will always be remembered as a day of … what's the opposite of infamy? Famy? Nah, that can't be right. But you get the gist. Often overlooked is the fact that, just a few days after that 3-3 draw with a Dons side tipped into crisis by their late setback in Edinburgh, Hibs were put back on the bottom of the table by dint of a 3-0 loss at Celtic Park. In a game where they played very well. Still, the momentum had been shifted. The moment that change everything as Rocky Bushiri pounced ... The real fork in the road, for Hibs, came a few days before the Aberdeen game, as a players-only crisis meeting at East Mains involved some tough talking and honest self-assessment. It worked. Because they genuinely believed in what Gray was TRYING to do. Heroes? Too many to mention … but we'll have a go Bushiri, obviously. The big man has been a drama magnet, in all the very best ways, since breaking back into the starting XI as Gray switched to a back three. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Jack Iredale also deserves enormous credit to go with his Socceroos call-up, with the left-sided centre-half making it possible for Gray to change formation, giving Nicky Cadden the freedom to roam down that left wing and fling high explosives into the opposition penalty box. What a pairing that has turned out to be. You could honestly run through an entire starting XI, plus subs, and pick out players worthy of a special mention. But we'd be here all day. Jack Iredale and Nicky Cadden have formed a dream partnership Just one more, then. Martin Boyle. No notes, skipper. Just a request that you do the same again next season, now that your future's been settled. SPFL's reputation for chaotic entertainment remains intact Hibs climbed from bottom of the table in December to secure third place in the Scottish Premiership with a game to spare. Ridiculous. And that probably wasn't even in the top five madcap storylines from another season of barely controlled insanity. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Merely restricting ourselves to incidents involving Hibs, there have been one or two VAR howlers, obviously. With sincere and heartfelt apologies (honest) to Sam Dalby, Daizen Maeda and, last but not least, Nicolas Raskin on Saturday. It's not as if Hibs haven't had the odd bad break themselves, of course. All part of the glorious imperfection that makes the SPFL's elite division such a beautiful mosaic of contrasting moods. Still, we can all unclench now. It's all just a faint and happy memory. Time to relax. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Or maybe start worrying about contracts, transfers and the need to strengthen for domestic and European adventures to come, the Cup Final, Europa League play-off draw (hopefully) and Conference League programme … Never ending, isn't it?
