Canfield's back in the regional round
CANTON, Ohio (WKBN) – It's back-to-back trips to the regional semifinals for Canfield. First-year head coach Andy Vlajkovich has guided his Cardinal bunch back to the Sweet 16 where they'll be matched with Warrensville Heights. The winner will play either Buchtel or Glenville at 4 p.m. Saturday. This year, Canfield is 17-1 in games where they've permitted their foes to score 50 points or less. -In its 35-28 district championship win over West Branch on Saturday, junior Landon Shina led the Cardinals' attack with 12 while Jake DeLisio finished with 6. Canfield forced 18 turnovers. -In May, the Cardinals hired Andy Vlajkovich as head basketball coach, replacing the legendary John Cullen who stepped down after last season. The former Canfield alum spent last year as an assistant after having success, most notably, as the head coach at both Harding and Canton McKinley. -Warrensville Heights got by Marlington, 62-57, in its district title win. -Since falling to Garfield Heights on Feb. 6; the Tigers have won 5 in a row – including edging Shaw (by 8), Cleveland Central Catholic (by 2) and Marlington (by 5). -The Tigers are 10-1 when scoring 60 points or more this season. Canfield captures back-to-back district championships
NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Canfield boys basketball downs West Branch 35-38, to win the Cardinals' second consecutive OHSAA Division IV District Championship at North Ridgeville High School, Saturday afternoon. Watch above for extended championship game highlights and interviews with Cardinals' coaches and players. 'I think this was the expectation was to get here. It was certainly a lot harder than we thought, I think West French is a heck of an opponent,' said Canfield head coach Andy Vlajkovich. 'They were really physical today, they scouted us well. I think the difference was just the mental toughness in that locker room.' Canfield's Landon Shina scored a game-high 12 points in the championship victory. 'It means everything to win the championship, but that's two in a row and we want to keep it moving forward,' said Canfield junior Landon Shina. 'We came short last year in the regional finals and we want to keep it moving forward and take another step.' Also, the Cardinal's Jake DeLisio scored six and Ben Weaver and Drew Shapiro each posted five in the win. West Branch's Cooper Anderson scored a team-high 11 points in the loss. He was backed up by Gavin Gregory with eight and Joey Jackson with five points. West Branch ends the season with an overall record of (13-12). Canfield advances to (21-4). This is Cardinal's head coach Andy Vlajkovich's first district title as a head coach. He previously was an assistant with Canfield for last seasons title run.
