Selangor Women's Convention 2025 to strengthen role of women in state's development
KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Women's Convention 2025 on June 28 at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) will serve as a comprehensive platform to empower women and enhance their role in the state's social and economic development. State Women Empowerment and Welfare Committee chairman Anfaal Saari said the programme, organised by the Selangor Women and Family Development Standing Committee, through Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS), is targeting more than 1,000 participants representing government agencies, academia, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), industry and women from various walks of life. 'This convention is part of the implementation of the Selangor Women's Policy 2024-2026 and serves as a crucial platform to showcase policies and best practices in women's participation in the workforce, community entrepreneurship and digital empowerment,' she said after launching the WBS Volunteers and Khairat Darul Ehsan (KDE) here today. Themed 'Meneroka Kekuatan, Mencipta Kejayaan', the convention will feature three main components, namely Her Career Convention, Hasil Suri Expo and Digital Entrepreneur Pitching. Anfaal said the Her Career Convention focuses on women's career development through technical education and vocational training, including in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as the care economy, with the participation of 30 companies. The Hasil Suri Expo will feature participation from 56 WBS Centres across Selangor, showcasing and marketing their respective community products, while the pitching session will involve 41 young female entrepreneurs presenting innovative digital ideas in competition for a special Digital Entrepreneur grant. Commenting on the state's target to increase women's workforce participation to 75 per cent by 2030, up from the current 69.9 per cent, Anfaal said several strategies are being implemented, including collaboration with TalentCorp and the organisation of the Career Comeback programme. 'Among the approaches introduced is the flexible work policy in state government-linked companies such as MBI Corporation. The feedback has been very positive because it helps women who need to care for young children or elderly parents,' she said. The state is also organising the Care Summit programme in October and expanding the Usahanita Digital initiative, a training and grant programme targeted at female entrepreneurs in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to accelerate the business digitalisation process. 'Through this programme, we help B40 and M40 women entrepreneurs registered with SSM to grow their businesses digitally. Several participants from the first cohort have successfully gained customers from abroad,' she explained. At the same event, Anfaal also announced the official launch of the KDE initiative, a continuation of the Mesra Selangor programme which provides death benefit (funeral) assistance of up to RM1,000 to the next of kin of the deceased. She added that more than 2,000 visitors attended the event today, including recipients of a special state grant of RM2,000 who participated in a care-giving course since last year. Anfaal expressed hope that the Selangor Women's Convention 2025 will serve as a catalyst for creating a comprehensive ecosystem for women's empowerment, offering career opportunities, including entrepreneurship, to women who are not yet formally engaged in the workforce. 'Through this platform, women can hone their potential and build strategic networks with various parties,' she said.

S'gor expands OKU programmes

SELANGOR is set to launch Yayasan Insan Istimewa Selangor, a RM4mil foundation that will take over and expand work currently handled by Jabatan Anak Istimewa Selangor (Anis). The foundation, expected to begin operating in August, will focus on delivering care, aid and development programmes for persons with disabilities (OKU) including children, youth and adults. Selangor women empowerment and welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari said the state would be allocating RM3mil for programme development and RM1mil for the foundation's administrative operations in the initial stages. The foundation, she said, would also be registered, allowing it to receive tax-exempt donations and public funding. 'With this foundation, we aim to build a Selangor that is inclusive and compassionate, where no one is left behind,' Anfaal said during a Hari Raya gathering in Shah Alam which highlighted autism inclusion. The event, jointly organised by Wanita Berdaya Selangor and Jabatan Anis, included autism-friendly activities, performances and exhibits. The event, which also served to commemorate World Autism Awareness Month, drew more than 1,000 participants. Wanita Berdaya Selangor is a state-linked agency focused on empowering women through education, entrepreneurship and community leadership, while Jabatan Anis provides early intervention and therapy for children with special needs. Many of the children who participated in the event had benefitted from the state's early intervention therapy programmes. Between March 27 and April 18, Jabatan Anis disbursed RM500,000 in aid to families, covering medical costs, therapy tools and educational support. 'We focused on ensuring that new applicants, especially those who had never received aid, were prioritised,' said Anfaal. Yayasan Insan Istimewa Selangor is set to expand this support system to reach more individuals with disabilities. Anfaal said the formation of the foundation was aligned with the state's wider care economy policy on uplifting care recipients and caregivers including parents, women and the elderly through structured and long-term welfare initiatives. Selangor was also expected to launch a statewide OKU policy providing a comprehensive framework for improving accessibility support services and social inclusion, she said. During the event, five single mothers affected by the Putra Heights explosion were each presented with RM2,000 in cash aid from Wanita Berdaya Selangor. 'These women were among those most affected and the contribution sends the message that the state sees them, supports them and stands in solidarity with them,' Anfaal said. — By AYUNA SHAMELIN

Children rescued from Cheras welfare home placed under Social Welfare Dept's care
SHAH ALAM: Eighteen children rescued from a welfare home in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, are now under the temporary care of the Social Welfare Department. Selangor Women Development and Social Welfare Committee chairman Anfaal Saari said the state Social Welfare Department was also working to trace the next of kin of the 12 boys and six girls. "The Selangor Social Welfare Department has obtained a temporary custody order for two months. After that, the process will continue until investigations are completed. "If we successfully trace these children's families, they will be returned to the rightful and qualified parties to care for them," she said after launching the Selangor Care Accelerator (XCare) 2025 here today. Previously, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry said in a statement that the welfare home was ordered to close following a viral video showing the mistreatment of children at the premises. Separately, commenting on the murder case in Section 18 involving two disabled beggars believed to have clashed over territory last week, Anfaal said the Selangor government was drafting the state's Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) policy. She said the policy would address the rights and needs of the disabled community, adopting a "no one left behind" and inclusivity approach. "For example, when it comes to employment opportunities for young and adult disabled individuals, we are looking at how companies can be encouraged to hire them. This focus on inclusivity aims to prevent issues such as begging," she said. On the reported rise in HIV infection cases among university and school students, Anfaal said her office would work closely with the police and relevant authorities to prevent the situation from worsening. She said she would also request a report from Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan on drug abuse and other social issues so that a coordinated response could be implemented. "We will also collaborate with the Selangor Health Department because early awareness and advocacy on the dangers of this disease are crucial. It must be addressed in an integrated manner, not just from a welfare or family development perspective," she said. – BERNAMA
