England and ex-Man United star 'set to snub Premier League return in favour of move to Ligue 1 giants' - where he will be reunited with former Red Devil Mason Greenwood
In-demand Lille midfielder Angel Gomes is set to snub a return to the Premier League in favour of a switch to Ligue 1 giants Marseille. Last month, the England midfielder confirmed his departure from Lille this summer, ending his five-year stay with the club. The 24-year-old, who has been capped four times by the Three Lions, left United in 2020 after failing to break into their first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, making just 10 appearances. Reports earlier this month claimed that Gomes was nearing a move to Marseille and now Fabrizio Romano has revealed the club are in the advanced stages of an agreement. Multiple Premier League clubs - including West Ham and Tottenham - were understood to have been keen on bringing him back to England, but it appears that they have missed out. A move to the Stade Velodrome would see Gomes reunite with fellow Carrington graduate Mason Greenwood, who finished last season as the joint-highest goalscorer in the French top flight. Other former Premier League stars who suit up for Roberto De Zerbi's side include Neal Maupay and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. After leaving United for Lille, Gomes spent the following season on loan at Boavista in Portugal, where he impressed his parent club enough to call him back and integrate him into their squad. Gomes featured in 134 matches for Lille, who finished fifth in the French top flight this season. All four of Gomes' senior international caps to date came under interim manager Lee Carsley last year. He made his debut as a substitute in England's 2-0 win over to Ireland in September, before playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Finland at Wembley just three days later. Gomes then also featured in a 3-1 triumph away to Finland in October and the 5-0 thrashing of Ireland in November. Prior to breaking into the senior side, Gomes enjoyed a highly successful youth career with England, winning the Under-17 World Cup in 2017 and the U21 European Championship in 2023.

ANGEL GOMES has agreed a three-year contract with Marseille, according to reports. The England midfielder, 24, will move on a free transfer having run down his contract with Lille. 4 Gomes came through Manchester United 's academy and made 10 first team appearances for the Red Devils. Having debuted for England last year, the playmaker attracted interest from Tottenham and West Ham. Per French football reporter Fabrice Hawkins, however, Gomes has snubbed a Prem return to join Marseille. Born less than a year apart, Gomes and Greenwood played together for various Red Devils age group sides, as well as briefly overlapping in the first team set-up. Having previously been a key player, Gomes hardly featured for Lille during the second half of the Ligue 1 season.
