Cars and community support hospice care
Car enthusiasts and families alike came together for this year's Angela's Picnic.
The car show took place on May 25 at Riversands Farm Village in Knopjeslaagte, after being moved from its traditional April date due to a waterlogged showground.
An estimated 600 cars were on display, ranging from vintage classics to modern marvels. Organised by the South African Motoring Clubs Association (Samca), the event continues to serve as a gathering for car clubs such as Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Jaguar, Mini, and many more.

It was not only a celebration of automotive passion but also a charitable occasion, raising funds for Wits Hospice, now operating under the Greendale House Palliative and Hospice Care Organisation, dedicated to providing essential care for those in need.
Visitors were encouraged to make voluntary donations on entry, supporting this vital work.
Bob Brown of Samca expressed enthusiasm about the event's growth and community spirit. 'Angela's Picnic has become a cherished tradition. It's wonderful to see so many people coming together, not just to celebrate cars but to support a great cause,' he said.
The event's origins trace back to Angela Heinz, a prominent socialite and the South African agent for Morgan cars. Inspired by her visit to a vintage car picnic in Bois de Boulogne, Heinz brought the idea to Johannesburg, hosting the first picnic in Delta Park.

Brown explained that her passion was matched by her charitable spirit, initially raising funds for Cansa, then later for Hospice, especially after her battle with cancer.
'In her memory, Angela's Picnic has donated over a million rand to hospice care, making it a fitting tribute to her lively personality.'
Historically held at Delta Park on the first Sunday of April, the event became a Johannesburg institution, attracting more than 1 000 cars by 2019. After a pause during the Covid-19 pandemic, the event moved to Riversands Farm Village in 2022, where it has continued to grow and evolve, with the 2025 edition marking its third year at the new venue.

Looking ahead, Brown anticipates even more cars, attractions, and community engagement at next year's event, scheduled for around the same time in late May.
