Police in Long Beach have arrested a man suspected of abusing a dog in a violent incident that was caught on video earlier this week. Graphic surveillance footage of the Monday morning attack outside of 235 E. 12th Street was posted on Instagram by a nonprofit called Animal Hope and Wellness. A man with a skateboard was seen lifting a medium-sized brown dog off the ground by the leash, yanking it over his shoulder, bodyslamming it to the ground, and kicking it. Late Tuesday, detectives located and arrested the man believed to be responsible, the Long Beach Police Department shared on Facebook. 'This type of cruelty has no place in our community,' Police Chief Wally Hebeish said. Police have not released the suspect's identity or announced any charges. 'I want to thank our detectives and officers for their outstanding work in swiftly identifying and apprehending the suspect,' Hebeish said. 'We recognize the deep concern this incident caused throughout our community and appreciate the public's assistance in sharing critical information.' The post also stated that the dog has been rescued and is in the care of Long Beach Animal Care Services. PETA had announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the man's arrest and information as to the whereabouts of the dog. It was unclear if anyone was eligible to claim the reward. Police are searching for a man who was caught on video throwing and kicking a dog to the ground in Long Beach. Animal Hope and Wellness posted the Instagram video, which was recorded Monday near 235 East 12th Street. 'The man in this video is severely abusing this poor pup without mercy and needs to be found asap,' the group wrote in the caption. 'All we can tell is that the man has a skateboard, and so the other skaters in the area may be able to identify who this is.' The Long Beach Police Department said it was investigating but hadn't said whether anyone had been arrested. 'Patrol officers have responded to the area and taken an animal cruelty report, as the incident had not been previously reported to the department,' the department wrote in an X post on Monday. 'Animal abuse is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our community.' People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a statement that the organization is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the man in the video. 'This dog was violently attacked — and who knows what other abuse has not been caught on camera,' said PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange in the statement. 'Someone knows this man, and PETA urges anyone with information to come forward immediately — it could save the dog's life.'
