Drones to soon transport fish in difficult terrains: Centre
New Delhi: Drones will soon transport fish in difficult terrains, from aggregator to distribution point, the government has informed. A pilot project on drone technology for live fish transport is currently ongoing, aiming to develop a 70-kg payload drone capable of carrying live fish in difficult terrains, according to Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary (Fisheries), the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. At an event here, Dr Likhi urged states to strengthen collaborative efforts aimed at upscaling the fisheries sector through innovation, infrastructure, and institutional synergy. Emphasis was laid on the extensive use of satellite technology to enhance fisher safety and operational efficiency covering aspects such as resource mapping, biometric identification, and facial recognition. The development of smart, integrated fishing harbours and modern fish markets aligned with green and blue sustainability principles was identified as a key future priority. He also called for strengthening of drone initiative through standard operating procedures (SOPs) and a supportive subsidy structure. The promotion of advanced fisheries technologies, with support from ICAR institutes, was encouraged alongside a strong focus on processing, marketing, and packaging, particularly through cluster development and a thriving startup ecosystem. Special emphasis was placed on leveraging 'Amrit Sarovars' for fisheries promotion, seeking active support from the states. The experts also called for the promotion of ornamental fisheries, and the development of seaweed farming and artificial reefs, encouraging private sector participation in these emerging areas. Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland), DoF highlighted key issues related to inland fisheries in the Inland States and Union Territories, urging states to step up mobilisation of applications for registration on the National Fisheries Development Portal (NFDP) and to facilitate increased access to benefits under various central sector schemes. Neetu Kumari Prasad, Joint Secretary (Marine), DoF emphasised the importance of developing robust infrastructure, smart harbours, and species diversification. The meeting served as a vital step towards aligning efforts across multiple stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the PM-MKSSY and various schemes and initiatives of the department by fostering collaboration, enhancing capacity-building initiatives, and bridging communication gaps between stakeholders.

Northeast to get 4 aquaparks, region has huge potential for fish production: Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh
Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh Sunday announced that four aquaparks will be set up in the Northeast. These four aquaparks would come up in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Nagaland. After inaugurating a fish festival in Agartala and virtually laying the foundation stone for the integrated aquapark in Tripura, the minister said, 'The northeastern states and Tripura have the potential to increase fish production, and they also have huge demands for fish. Both the Central and state governments have undertaken efforts jointly to hike the production of fish in the country.' The integrated aquapark in Tripura would come up in the Unakoti district. Tripura Animal Resource Development Department Minister Sudhangshu Das, among others, was present at the event. 'The project, having an investment of Rs 42.4 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), would act as the backbone for upgradation of infrastructure required for production of fish, processing, and marketing in the state,' said a senior official. The aquapark would offer services of hatcheries, feed mills, and cold storage, among others, under one roof, as per an official statement. The park would further serve as a hub-and-spoke model for addressing regional fish requirements. At present, Tripura has an annual per capita fish consumption rate of 29 kg. The Union minister inaugurated a 40 TLPD milk plant at Bamutia in West Tripura district on Saturday. The newly launched milk processing unit has a capacity of handling 40,000 litres of milk per day, of which 10,000 litres would be processed into curd and buttermilk. The milk processing unit has been set up to achieve self-reliance in milk production, an official said.

Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh on Sunday said that to boost fish production, the Centre has sanctioned 11 Integrated Aquaparks across the country, with four of them to be set up in four northeastern states. After virtually laying the foundation stone of Tripura's proposed Integrated Aquapark and inaugurating the fish festival, the Union Minister said that four Integrated Aquaparks would be set up in Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. 'Tripura and other northeastern states have huge demands for fish, and these states have the potential to increase the production of fish,' Singh told the media. He said the Centre and the state governments in the country have taken joint efforts to increase fish production in the country. Later, addressing the function, the Union Minister said the Centre would do everything and would always support making Tripura self-sufficient in fish and milk production. The state's proposed Integrated Aquapark would be set up in Unakoti district headquarters, Kailashahar. A senior official said this Integrated Aquapark is being set up with an investment worth Rs 42.4 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The Integrated Aquapark in Kailashahar would serve as a backbone for modernising infrastructure for fish production, processing and marketing in the state, benefiting a wide range of stakeholders across its value chain, he said. An official statement said the Department of Fisheries, under the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, has been prioritising the establishment of Integrated Aquaparks as a flagship intervention under PMMSY. These aquaparks are conceptualised as integrated hubs that offer services ranging from hatcheries and feed mills to cold storage, processing, training, and marketing, all under one roof. According to the statement, these facilities are not merely physical structures; they are catalysts for value chain development, innovation, and livelihood generation, particularly for youth and women in the region. The parks would operate on a hub-and-spoke model, customised to address regional needs and specific thematic areas. This integrated approach ensures that all facets of the fisheries and aquaculture value chain, from production and processing to retail, are supported by providing end-to-end solutions, maximising output and fostering sustainable growth. Tripura has emerged as a frontrunner in this effort. The state, with its high fish consumption rate of over 29 kg per capita per year, has made significant progress in the fisheries sector in recent years, the statement said. Under the PMMSY and Blue Revolution, the state of Tripura has received projects worth Rs 319 crore during the last 10 years to support aquaculture expansion, infrastructure, technology infusion, fishers' welfare and market intervention. In the foundation stone laying ceremony and inauguration of the fish festival, George Kurian, Union Minister of State, MoFAH&D and Tripura's Animal Resource Development Department Minister Sudhangshu Das, among others, were present. On this occasion, certificates/sanction orders were distributed to various beneficiaries in the fisheries sector that entailed the disbursement of Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) to eligible fishers and fish farmers. Best performing Cooperatives, Fish Farmer Producer Organisations (FFPOs), and fisheries startups were also recognised for their contributions to the sector and beneficiaries supported under PMMSY received certificates, highlighting the government's continued commitment towards inclusive and sustainable development.

Centre to extend all help to make Tripura ‘aatmanirbhar' in animal husbandry, fisheries sectors: Union Minister
Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh Saturday said the Centre would extend all required assistance to make Tripura atmanirbhar (self-dependent) in milk and fish production. Speaking at the inauguration of a milk processing plant at Bamutia in West Tripura district, Singh said milk production is increasing by 6 per cent in India every year against the world average of a 2 per cent hike. 'Tripura has huge scope in the animal husbandry and fisheries sector,' the minister further said. Sharing a success story of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Union minister stated that the capacity of milk collection at an old milk collection centre in Varanasi increased to 3 lakh litres per day from 11,000 litres per day after it was taken over by NDDB. He, thereafter, asked the Tripura government to take strong initiatives to eradicate foot and mouth disease among cattle, stating that any outbreak of the disease makes it difficult to export dairy products to European countries. The newly launched milk processing unit in Tripura can handle 40,000 litres of milk every day, of which 10,000 litres would be turned into curd and buttermilk. Tripura set a 10-year target for food self-sufficiency in 2002-03. The target was not achieved at the time of evaluation in 2012-13, with barely 25,000 MT of meat, 12.5 crore eggs and 1.05 MT of milk produced annually. Later, the erstwhile Left Front government set a new target for self-sufficiency in food production by 2020. But despite repeated attempts, it failed to cut down on its import dependency. In 2020, then chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb said his government was trying to double the income of farmers, including those in the dairy and poultry sectors.

For this, the ministry organised "Coastal States Fisheries Meet: 2025", where Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated and laid the foundation for key projects for seven coastal states and UTs with a total outlay of Rs 255.30 crores under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), underscoring the commitment of the government for advancing the fisheries sector in the coastal states and UTs. The fisheries sector in India plays a crucial role in supporting rural livelihoods and contributing to the country's national economy. With a vast coastline and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.02 million square kilometres, India boasts rich marine resources. The marine fisheries sector in India harbours significant potential, estimated at 5.31 million tonnes. Coastal states and Union Territories, which include around 3,477 coastal fishing villages, produce 72 per cent of the country's total fish production and account for 76 per cent of India's total seafood exports.
