From June 1, Rs 250 fine for crossing ‘yellow' line in Kolkata Metro
A fine of Rs 250 will be imposed on those crossing the 'yellow' safety line on the Kolkata Metro's platforms from June 1, officials said on Monday.
'Unnecessarily crossing the yellow line will be considered a nuisance in the Metro station and will attract a penalty of Rs 250,' the Metro authorities said.
The measure is being taken to ensure the safety and security of passengers, it said.
'It has been found that a section of commuters unnecessarily crosses the yellow line when there is no train at the station in spite of repeated requests. In order to curb this tendency, Metro Railway authorities have now decided to launch a special drive against the erring commuters,' it added.
Announcements have been made for weeks through public address systems, urging the commuters to stay behind the yellow line. Initiatives like putting up posters and counselling people to refrain from stepping into the yellow line have also been taken, it is learnt.
The idea is that a higher penalty will act as a stronger deterrent, officials said.
The announcement prompted a mixed reaction from daily commuters.
'Rs 250 is too heavy a fine for taking just one step across the line. What if you just lose your balance or simply don't see it?' asked Anindita Das, a first-year student and a daily commuter.
'If it saves even a life, maybe it will be worth it. People need to understand that a suicide attempt in a metro station also impacts lakhs of other passengers. We all have busy lives and people take the Metro for a hassle-free journey,' said Partha Mondal, a bank employee.
