Extreme siren alerts still ringing in ears: Bengal student recounts horror

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Amid chaos and missile attacks by Iran on the US airbase in Doha on Monday, the Indian govt managed to evacuate Indian students, including at least five from Bengal, via Jordan. While India was initially using flights of Jazeera Airways to evacuate those stuck in Israel, Indian Air Force aircraft were pressed into service to evacuate students faster. On Monday afternoon, the buses carrying Indian students from a number of cities in Israel got stranded near the Jordanian border after an "extreme alert" siren went off following Iran's missile strikes in central Israel. The bus reached the border a bit late. Although the visa process at the border was complete by the afternoon, the evacuees were not given any flight details till late evening. "The first flight carrying Indian students left Amman around 2 pm local time. We heard that another batch of Indian students was being flown via Egypt. Meanwhile, television screens flashed the news of Iran's attack on the airbase at Doha. Everything started changing after that," recounted Amaresh Das, a resident of East Midnapore and a post-doctoral research scholar with the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unglaublich: Der Rechner zeigt sofort den Wert Ihres Hauses an Hauswert Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Meanwhile, Qatar temporarily closed the airspace, and planes were diverted from Doha. Both Bahrain and Kuwait closed their airspaces as well, leading to confusion and uncertainty. The first flight, which left in the afternoon, had to return to Kuwait after the escalation. "We could realise that our journey back home was getting shrouded in uncertainty. But we received a message around 8.30 pm local time, and it said that we would be arriving at the Ghaziabad base of the Indian Air Force instead of the Indira Gandhi International Airport," he recounted. While the IAF planes were landing in Jordan, Iran was continuing with its offensive, making it difficult for the plane to land. The plane finally took off from Amman after midnight and reached New Delhi at 9 am. Aniruddha Bera, a resident of Salboni and a research fellow at Tel Aviv University, Israel, returned home on Tuesday. "I received a call from my son this morning, and we are relieved now," his father, Asim Bera, said. Abir Mukhopadhyay, a research scholar at a university in Israel and a resident of Asansol, also returned home. Twenty tourists from Deganga, stranded in Iran, landed in New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. Of them, a group of 11 pilgrims from three families in Dhalipara under Chaurashi Gram Panchayat in Deganga went to Iraq and then to Iran to visit prominent religious sites there. "My parents reached New Delhi this afternoon. They are likely to catch a flight to Kolkata on Wednesday," said Hossain Mehedi, son of Md Akram Hossain, a member of the 11 pilgrims' group.
