In four months, 35 dead in Garhwa accidents
Garhwa: A total of 35 persons have lost their lives and 57 were injured in 62 road accidents across Garhwa district from January to April, the district transport department records driving has been the leading cause of accidents, followed by speeding, and riding a motorcycle without helmet.
"Teenagers today drive auto-rickshaws and four-wheelers too. Rash driving, overloading, and overtaking often lead to accidents," said a commuter, Ankit Dubey.A total of 10 persons died and four sustained grievous injuries in January, eight died and 14 were seriously injured in February, 10 died and 13 sustained grievous injuries in March, and 7 died and 26 were injured in transport officer (DTO) Dheeraj Prakash said, "Awareness programmes are organised in schools and colleges to curb accidents. We also conduct vehicle checking drive on a regular basis.""Those who come to fill up challans in the district transport office are offered flowers and invited for counselling. They are taught road safety norms and are also given road safety books and pamphlets," added road safety manager Sanjay Baitha.A total of 1,425 motorists were fined Rs 3,383,450 in January for violating traffic norms during vehicle checking drive, 208 motorists were fined Rs 6,43,550 in February, and 107 persons were fined Rs 4,33,400 in March under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
