Pill Carnival queen and court to be crowned next weekend
The carnival, which was cancelled in 2024, is set to return this year on August 25. This date falls on the bank holiday Monday. As part of the event, a carnival queen is crowned, along with an attendant, court, and flower girls. The official judging to crown this year's queen is taking place at Pill Harriers next Sunday, with the closing date for entries being Saturday, May 24. The winning queen will receive £75 in prize money, while the attendant will get £50 as well as a trophy and medal. All entrants will be given a goody bag, and all dresses are supplied by the carnival committee to ensure everyone is able to take part. The queen will be chosen by a three-person strong judging panel, with the carnival committee members in attendance. All entries must be sent to organiser Ann Barton by visiting her shop AB Florist on Commercial Road or by calling her on 07543433342. Mrs Barton said: "It's a really lovely part of the carnival, and we can't wait to be back after a year out. "We've actually already had a good number of floats enter, and food and craft stalls. "There is still some availability for stall holders too." The carnival, which has been running since the 1980s, showcases food and drink, craft events, and even a funfair. You also can't forget the 'magical' parade and carnival Queen competition. Openings for food and craft stalls are available now and traders are asked to contact Danielle Hadden on 07896921462 for more information about this. Groups that would like to take part in the parade itself are asked to reach out to Ann Barton on 07543433342.
