Port Wentworth receives GDOT greenlight for downtown revitalization

PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. (WSAV) — The City of Port Wentworth has received the greenlight to take jurisdiction over the stretch of Coastal Highway 25 in the downtown The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) granted the city's request to assume control over the stretch from Grange Road to Bonnybridge Road on Wednesday, April 16. The decision will help the city move forward with its 'Downtown Strategy', which includes revamping road space to accommodate pedestrian right-of-way and transform the area to what it considers a business-friendly space. All part of of Port Wentworth's vision to enhance itself as a connected community destination. 'Thank you for sharing the City of Port Wentworth's downtown vision plan for a pedestrian friendly commercial corridor,' said Chief Engineer at GDOT, Meg B. Pirkle. 'GDOT appreciates the City of Port Wentworth's partnership, and we look forward to working with you to help advance the City's vision.' 'This milestone is a result of preparation, planning, perseverance, and partnership with GDOT, state leadership and other committed individuals, in particular the Honorable Chair of GDOT's Transportation Board, Ann R. Purcell and Commissioner Russel McMurray, who I thank for their ongoing support and engagement,' said City Manager, Steve Davis.
