Death toll rises to four in Tenkasi shelter food contamination case

Tenkasi: The death toll in the suspected food contamination incident at a private shelter home in Sundarapandiapuram near Tenkasi rose to four on Friday. A 70-year-old woman, identified as Dhanalakshmi, who was undergoing treatment for severe digestive complications at the Tenkasi govt hospital, died without responding to treatment on Friday. Meanwhile, eight more residents — Ram Lakshmi, Esakkiammal, Mariammal, Mumtaz, Karuppayi, Selvaraj, Kaliyappan, and Meenatchi Sundaram — who showed worsening symptoms, were shifted to the Tirunelveli Govt Medical College Hospital from Tenkasi GH for advanced care. Revathi Balan, dean of Tirunelveli GH, said all eight are currently stable and receiving treatment, but one of them, Mariammal, was admitted to the intensive care unit. "They are being closely monitored due to their age and underlying health conditions," she said. Sources at the Tenkasi GH said early symptoms and preliminary lab reports indicate a possible infection, most likely caused by contaminated food. "All concerned departments — food safety, health, and police — will be submitting their findings to the district collector in a day," said a senior doctor.
