Women of the sea

France 12:46 Issued on: 12:46 min In a special edition to mark the UN Oceans Conference being held here in France, we're focusing on the women of the sea; be they sailors, explorers or working in the merchant navy. In a world long dominated by men, there is now a wave of talented women who are turning the tide. Annette Young meets Swiss sailor, Justine Mettraux, who was the first woman to cross the finish line of the 2025 Vendée Globe; the solo round-the-world race. She set the record for the fastest result ever by a woman. Our other guest is Tamara Klink, the Brazilian sailor who made her first solo Atlantic crossing at the age of 24. Last year, the 28-year-old became the first woman to spend eight months of winter in Greenland alone on her vessel. Plus what is life like for the women in the French merchant navy, who still make up an exceedingly tiny minority, and how some still experience misogynistic behaviour.

Why do women live longer than men?

Why is there such a gender gap when it comes to which sex lives the longest? Globally, women tend to outlive men by at least five years. Yet why do doctors and researchers consistently fail to understand the inequality between the sexes when it comes to the ageing process? Annette Young talks to Dr Saher Mehdi, an Indian longevity scientist. Also, the focus may be on the new and first American pope of the Catholic Church but what about the women who make up half of the church? We report on how nuns are calling for greater inclusion as well as recognition of sexual abuse. Plus, with the Women's Rugby World Cup around the corner, interest in the game is on the rise among young women in the UK and here in France.

Inside Hitler's concentration camp for women

Europe 12:45 Issued on: Modified: As Europeans mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War, in this special edition, we're focusing on the French women who were sent to a concentration camp for aiding the Resistance. Ravensbrück, near Berlin, was the largest concentration camp the Nazis built for women. Our reporters meet one of the French female survivors whose story of courage is extraordinary. Also Annette Young speaks to Gwen Strauss, an American author whose book 'The Nine' is the true tale of nine women, one being her great-aunt, and who managed to escape from a death march leaving Ravensbrück.

Can feminism be African?

In this special edition, we're focusing on women's rights in Africa. As UN Women writes, women on the continent are the backbone of family and communities. Yet many endure the worst working conditions with unpaid care, low pay jobs and little or no social protection. They also suffer from different forms of violence including female genital mutilation, child marriage and physical violence. So how does feminism fit within this context especially as many conservative male leaders in the region often dismiss it as a Western import. Annette Young talks to Minna Salami, the author of 'Can Feminism be African?' Also how Togo's strict abortion laws mean thousands of women are left with no choice but to seek illegal terminations, often putting their lives at risk. Plus the teenage girls in a Kenyan refugee camp who are learning self-defence in an environment rife with gender violence.
