The Kentucky Derby wouldn't exist without migrant workers. Fix immigration mess.
As the Kentucky Derby approaches, articles about Churchill Downs, food, fashion and bourbon appear in the Courier Journal and on the airways. Missing from this discussion and pleasant diversion from national politics is mention of the migrant workers who make these festivities happen.
The thoroughbred industry is, and has been, heavily dependent on migrant workers, as are other hospitality industries. Immigration is a big problem, most everyone agrees.
The individuals crossing the southern border also solve another U.S. problem: labor. Imagine Derby 151 without exercise riders and grooms, lawn care services or hotel staff. This complicated issue needs a solution that addresses all of its facets. Fear and intimidation don't do that.
