Egerton swimmer opens up about her anoreixa battle during Covid
A national swimming squad member from Egerton has written a book about her battle with autism and anorexia. Eighteen-year-old Grace Robinson launched Anorexia, Autism and Me from the Mayor's parlour in Bolton on May 12. In the book, the City of Manchester Aquatics Swim Team member documents her struggle with anorexia and the impact it had on her sport. The Egerton swimmer developed the eating disorder during the Covid pandemic when pools were closed. (Image: Supplied) She said this, alongside her autism diagnosis, caused her to struggle with not being able to swim. Grace said: "Swimming was one of the only sports that we could not copy at home; you can kick a ball around, you can hit a tennis ball against a wall, you can still perform some gymnastic exercises in your homes and gardens, but there's no way of replicating a 25-metre pool. "When swimming stopped my routine, my normality, stopped too and my autistic brain could not cope with it. "I started to control these feelings by stopping eating because I wasn't exercising, and before I knew it, I was very poorly. "When I returned to the pool, I couldn't do it, I was too weak. "I'd gone from being a strong capable swimmer to struggling to swim four lengths." Grace is open about her struggles and the support she received from her family, as her desire was to always be back in the pool. (Image: Supplied) Julie Robinson, Grace's mum, said: "Anorexia is an awful illness; with Grace's added learning disability, we battled with getting her to understand what she was doing to herself and what impact it was having and would have on her. "But reasoning in her brain is different, so our approach to getting her well had to also be different." Writing the book brought back dark moments but sharing her story is important to her, to remind others they're not alone. Grace, who is on the Paralympic swimming pathway, now has her book available on Amazon.
